A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students shall be able to obtain
at least 85% of the proficiency to;
a. Discuss the origin and cultural background of selected
Philippine Festivals;
b. Identify the importance of the Philippine Festivals and;
c. Create miniature mask or costume of a selected
Philippine Festivals.

kinds of Festivals in the Philippines,
how we celebrate them, how they
are formed by using different
elements of art and culture, and
how they are brought to life.

Pahiyas Festival

The Pahiyas festival is celebrated


every 15th of the hot summer
month of May in Lucban Quezon in
honor of San Isidro Labrador.

Do you know who San Isidro


Labrador is?

becoming a Saint.

That’s right, as you can see in the


pictures. There are so many fruits,
vegetables and flowers during this
festival because the purpose of this
festival is to honor San Isidro and
also Farmers Thanksgiving for a rich
and bountiful harvest.
The word 'pahiyas' was derived from
the word 'payas', which
means decoration or to decorate.

decoration of their houses?

Ma’am the decoration of their
house is so colorful and they
have this colorful leaf-shaped
decoration in every house.

decoration is called “kipling” it is
usually made of banana, talisay,
kakao leaves and they use “laon” or
sticky rice mixed with water, food
coloring and salt and spread
individually on each leaf to make it
colorful.

Obando Fertility Rite

Obando Fetility Rite?
Yes Ma’am That is celebrated
in Obando Bulacan. That is
popular for couples who are
praying to have child
That’s right! Obando fertility rite is a
dance ritual and Catholic festival
celebrated every May in Obando,
Bulacan. Locals and pilgrims

dressed in traditional costumes,


dance and sing in town’s streets to
honor Obando’s three patron saint:
- San Pascual (Paschal Baylon)
- Santa Clara (Clare of Assisi)
- Nuestra

The soldiers are wearing red
costumes and mask and there
is man carrying cross.
That right! Moriones is celebrated
during holy week. It is called
moriones festival because
“morion” means mask or visor
that’s why they are wearing mask
that covers the wearer’s face,
which is part of the medieval
roman armor worn in biblical
times.

painted like a roman soldiers
detailing the eyes and the
facial expression.

The Moriones refers to the masked
and costumed penitents who march
around the town for seven days
searching for St. Longinus, the
roman centurion that miraculously
gained his eyesight when HIS eyes
was hit by Jesus blood. And they’re
props is usually made of
papier-mâché or hand-carved wood
for their mask, swords or spears,
and shields.

Any Idea about Ati-atihan Festival? Ma’am ati-atihan festival is

dancing in the street to honor
Santo Nino.

means “make-believe Atis”. Atis
are the indigenous native in kalibo
aklan.

To see if you really understand our
lesson, let’s have an activity. This
activity is called “Spin the wheel” all

that, I have a question. What do
you usually see in a Festival? What
bring yesterday. All the materials
will use for you to make your own
design of mask or costumes of
different Festivals I discussed to you
today. Yesterday I asked you to
print out the figures of a paper doll
choose female or male only.

What do you need:


1. Figure of a paper doll
(provided by the teacher)
2. Main or base part of your
costume, you may use
oslo paper for tougher
base
3. References for your
costume, (you may
encouraged to create your
own ideas.)
4. Scissors
5. Paste, glue or tape
6. Coloring materials such
as pens, paint and
crayons
7. Other additional detail
materials such as
beads, sequins and
recycled materials
8. Folder or envelope to
keep your paper dolls and
costumes in

What to do:
1. Choose a festival costume
you want to create,
including head pieces, or
other props that are
necessary to complete the
attire.
2. By using the paper dolls
provided, trace a copy the
figures to determine the
size of the costume needed.
You may add additional
details like hairstyle and
facial expressions on your
doll.
3. Use different materials
to create different
textures, recycled
materials are
encouraged. (e.g, used
popsicle sticks for props,
broom hair for wigs or
headdresses)
4. When you’re done, dress up
your paper dolls before you
present it to your teacher.
