2. Air enters a compressor operating at steady state at 1.05 bar, 300 K, with a volumetric flow
rate of 12 m3/min and exits at 12 bar, 400 K. Heat transfer occurs at a rate of 2 kW from the
compressor to its surroundings. Assuming the ideal gas model for air and neglecting kinetic
and potential energy effects, determine the power input, in kW.
3. Two steady flows of R134a enters a control volume as shown in the figure below. One is
0.025 kg/s flow at 0.8 MPa, 150oC, and the other enters at 1 MPa, 80 oC. A single flow of air
exits at 0.2 MPa, 40oC. The control Volume rejects 1 kW heat to the surroundings and
produces 4 kW of power. Neglect kinetic energy changes, determine the mass flow rate at the
second inlet, in kg/s.
4. Air at 5 bar, 400 K and a velocity of 40 m/s enters a nozzle operating at steady state and expands
adiabatically to the exit, where the pressure is 1 bar and velocity is 300 m/s. For air modeled as an
ideal gas with k = 1.4, determine for the nozzle:
a. the system model & the process model on T-s diagram
b. the temperature at the exit, in K
