Engineering Thermodynamics (CHE 201)
Tutorial Set 2, 2021/2022 Session

1. Determine the phase or phases in a system consisting of H2O at the following

conditions and sketch p-v and T-v diagrams showing the location of each state.

(a) p = 5 bar, T = 151.9 oC.

(b) p = 5 MPa, T = 264 oC
(c) T = 180 oC, 0.9 MPa
(d) ) p = 20 MPa, T = 100 oC
(e) T = -10 oC, 1.0 kPa

2. A closed system of mass 2 kg undergoes an adiabatic process. The work done on the
system is 30 kJ. The velocity of the system changes from 3 m/s to 15 m/s. During the
process, the elevation of the system increases 45 meters. The acceleration of gravity is
g = 9.8 m/s2. Determine the change in internal energy of the system in kJ.

3. Steam in a piston-cylinder assembly expands from p1 = 35 bar to p2 = 7 bar. The

pressure-volume relation during the process is pV2 = constant. The mass of steam is
2.3 kg. Other steam properties at the initial state are u1 = 3282.1 kJ/kg and v1 = 113.24
cm3/g. at the final state u2 = 2124.6 kJ/kg. Neglecting changes in kinetic and potential
energy, calculate the heat transfer, in kJ, for the steam as the system.

4. A closed system consists of an ideal gas with mass m and constant specific ratio k. If
kinetic and potential energy changes are negligible,

(a) show that for any adiabatic process the work is

(b) show that an adiabatic polytropic process in which work is done only at a moving
boundary is described by pVk = constant.

5. Consider a gas mixture whose apparent molecular weight is 33, initially at 3 bar and
300 K, and occupying a volume of 0.1 m3. The gas undergoes an expansion during
which the pressure-volume relation is pV1.3 = constant and the energy transfer by heat
to the gas is 3.84 kJ. Assume the ideal gas model with cv = 0.6 + (2.5 x 10-4) T, where
T is in K and cv has units of kJ/kg·K. Neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects,
determine:

(a) the final temperature, in K.

(b) the final pressure, in bar.
(c) the final volume, in m3.
(d) the work in kJ.

6. Steam enters a nozzle operating at steady state at 30 bars, 320 oC, with a velocity of
100 m/s. The exit pressure and temperature are 10 bar and 200 oC, respectively. The
mass flow rate is 2 kg/s. Neglecting heat transfer and potential energy, determine
(a) the exit velocity, in m/s.
(b) the inlet and exit flow areas, in cm2.

7. Air enters a control volume operating at steady state at 1.05 bar, 300 K, with a
volumetric flow rate of 12 m3/min and exits at 12 bar, 400 K. Heat transfer occurs at a
rate of 20 kW from the control volume to the surroundings. Neglecting kinetic and
potential energy effects, determine the power, in kW.
