Symptom

This SAP Note contains release information and restrictions when using Extended Warehouse Management
(EWM) on a separate decentralized SAP S/4HANA system, on-premise edition 1909.

This decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA does not provide all features and functions which are provided by
SAP EWM 9.5. Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA has in some areas less features but in other areas
more features than SAP EWM 9.5. Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA also has some differences in
features and functions compared to the so-called embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA which is used in the
same system & client like other SAP S/4HANA applications.

This note provides implementation projects guidance before they start their implementation of decentralized
EWM on an S/4HANA stack.

Reason and Prerequisites

SAP has recommendations for implementing decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA.

Solution

Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA is released for integration with either an SAP ERP system (minimal
release: SAP ERP 6.0 EhP 3 or higher) or an SAP S/4HANA on-premise system with ERP role (minimal
release: SAP S/4HANA OP 1610).

SAP provides the following documentation as a guidance for the implementation of decentralized EWM on
SAP S/4HANA:

• SAP Note 1606493 SAP EWM Deployment Options Best Practices

• Document "EWM Deployment Differences", which is attached to the SAP Note on hand
• Integration guide for decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA, which is attached to the SAP Note on hand
• SAP Note 2839077 for guidance on how to integrate with SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA with active Retail
Industry Solution
• SAP Note 2976757 for migration from a decentral Business Suite EWM System to a decentral EWM on
SAP S/4HANA

SAP recommends to study carefully the list of differences between decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA
1909 and SAP EWM 9.5 when deciding for the product version to be used for a new EWM implementation
project. The note on hand and its attached document "EWM Deployment Differences" provides information
on feature parity gaps of decentralized EWM on S/4HANA compared to SAP EWM 9.5. In addition to these
feature parity gaps there are also new additional features available in decentralized EWM on S/4HANA which

2021-10-31 2840129

are not provided in SAP EWM 9.5. SAP has published these new features per SAP S/4HANA release in the
"What's New Viewer - SAP S/4HANA" which is available in the SAP Help Portal. All SAP S/4HANA versions
after 1709 provide more functionality than SAP EWM 9.5.

EWM can be used in two different deployment modes of SAP S/4HANA systems:

1. Embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA, which integrates only with the local ERP storage locations, is
available in two license versions:
• Basic Warehouse Management
• Extended Warehouse Management
2. Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA, which cannot integrate to local ERP storage locations, but can
integrate to ERP storage locations of other clients or other systems, is available in one license version:
• Extended Warehouse Management. Note: every warehouse which is implemented in
decentralized EWM is an extended warehouse.

Conceptual Differences of Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA compared to embedded EWM in SAP
S/4HANA

Most of the simplified integrations of embedded EWM into other SAP S/4HANA applications of the same
system & client, as described in the attached document "EWM Deployment Differences", cannot be used in
case of decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA due to the nature of a two-system landscape. Thus, the
decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA is more similar to SAP EWM 9.5 (or lower versions thereof) than the
embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA.

The decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA also offers in a few cases more extended features than the
embedded EWM in S/4HANA in order to provide as much as possible feature parity to SAP EWM 9.5.

Details are provided in the attached document "EWM Deployment Differences".

Conceptual Differences of Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA compared to SAP EWM 9.5

• Decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA is not using the SCM master data entities SCM Product, SCM
Batch and SCM Batch Classification. Instead the central ERP master data entities material master,
batch master and batch classification are used.
• Master data distribution for central ERP entities material, batch, batch classification (including
characteristics and classes), customer and vendor does not use the SCM Core Interface (CIF). Instead
standard interfaces for replication of ERP material master, batch master, batch characteristics,
customer master and vendor master are used.
• Whenever a corresponding SAP S/4HANA customizing table exist, decentralized EWM is not using the
EWM customizing table like in SAP EWM 9.5 but is using the corresponding SAP S/4HANA
customizing table. This facilitates the cross-system customizing synchronization between the ERP
systems (SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA) and the decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA because in both
systems the same technical tables are used.

Details, including the list of customizing tables, are provided in the attached document "EWM Deployment
Differences". Furthermore, the integration guide for decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA provides a list of
customizing tables to be synchronized between decentralized EWM on S/4HANA and ERP.

Restrictions of decentralized EWM on SAP S/4HANA 1909 compared to SAP EWM 9.5

The differences are described in the attached document "EWM deployment differences". In addition, the
following restrictions apply

• Integration to multiple SAP ERPs and/or S/4HANAs with ERP system role with non harmonized
products (future roadmap beyond 2020)

• TM & EWM used in same decentral SAP S/4HANA system & client is released under specific
conditions only, see SAP note 2812981
• CIF is not used for master data replication, as such all CIF BAdIs for master data distribution cannot be
used. Instead customer exits (e.g. BAdIs) within the ALE IDOC framework have to be used for custom
enhancement functions within ERP master data replication. Examples of this are:
• Transfer of additional custom 'Z' fields in material master can be done by using own IDOC
versions which include the additional custom fields and implementing BAdIs on sender and
receiver side.
• Automatic creation of warehouse-specific product master on receiving of material master from
SAP ERP system.

Features in decentralized EWM on S/4HANA 1909 which are not using single-system integration
qualities

S/4HANA EWM 1909 to S/4HANA TM 1909 system internal integration is done via A2A services in the same
way as cross system communication. General scope description of TM EWM integration applies, see SAP
note 1984252.

For general restrictions of EWM on S/4HANA 1909 compared to functions that are generally available
in SAP S/4HANA see SAP note 2806070.
