Antonio Pigafetta – Is the author and he’s a Italian scholar and explorer.
He joined the Spanish expedition to the Spice Islands led by Ferdinand
Magellan, the world’s first circumnavigation, and is best known for being
the chronicler of the voyage.
B.
The primary motivation or intention of the author in writing the document
is to discover and learn about the world. He wanted to record details and
information during the expedition which caused him to join the voyage
and served as an assistant to Magellan.
C.
His writing was primarily based on his own observations and judgment.
Because the source was European, there were some biases in the author’s
perspective, such as;
Religious Beliefs – Antonio Pigafetta’s religious beliefs influenced his
writing. He previously described native religious beliefs as blasphemous,
barbaric, and demonic in nature because they differed from Christian
teachings and traditions.
Ethnocentric – Antonio Pigafetta compared the color of their skin to that of
native Filipinos, describing the latter as darker in color, which is entirely
normal given that Mariana Island is a tropical island. Based on his
European perspective, he defined Filipino appearance and intelligence.
Perception of his captain/general – Antonio Pigafetta demonstrated in his
writings how highly regarded and biased he was towards their captain
when, throughout the document, he never wrote a single negative thing
about him, regardless of his characteristics, personality, or actions.
C.
Magellan introduce the Christianity to the Philippines. And he inlaid a
cross to symbolize on that event of propaganda of the Roman Catholic.
Spanish influence is evident in Filipino, especially in loanwords and
vocabulary taken from Spanish
The introduction of Christianity and the establishment of played a central
role in shaping Filipino practices and traditions.
The encounter between Spaniards and Filipinos resulted exchanging goods
ideas, and technology.
D.
Studying events like “First Voyage Around the World” encourages
historical consciousness and a deeper understanding of the forces that have
shaped the Philippines. This awareness of history can inform decision-
making in the present and future guiding efforts to build a just equitable
society.
The presentation of Christianity amid this period significantly formed the
devout scene of the Philippines. The transcendently Catholic nature of the
nation nowadays may be a result of this chronicled impact. This highlights
the part of religion in forming Filipino society and the need for devout
resistance and interfaith exchange within the show and future.
The encounter between European and indigenous Filipino cultures during
this period led to cultural syncretism, where elements of both cultures
merged. This serves as a testament to the Philippines' rich cultural
diversity and the ability of its people to adapt and integrate foreign
influences. In the present, this can be a source of cultural pride and a
reminder of the importance of cultural inclusivity and diversity.
