Lab Report:
Water of Crystallization
Background: Water of crystallization is the amount of water present in one formula unit of salt.
These water molecules are present inside the crystals of the salt.

Materials:

Weighing Scale China Dish Bunsen Burner

Spatula Copper Sulphate Crystals Tripod Stand

Wire Gauze

Procedure:

1. Weigh copper sulphate crystals on weighing scale

2. Transfer copper sulphate into china dish
3. Setup the Bunsen burner by putting tripod stand over it and putting wire gauze on the
stand.
4. Put the china dish over the burner and turn it on to add heat while stirring constantly (this
step vaporizes the water in the crystals)
5. Once copper sulphate has turned completely white, remove from heat
6. Weigh the resultant substance.

Results:

Initial mass of copper sulphate: 5.405 ± 0.001 g

Final mass of copper sulphate: 3.335 ± 0.001 g

Data Processing:

Mass of water evaporated: 5.405 – 3.335 = 2.070 ± 0.002 g

The mass ratio of CuSO4 : H2O is 2.070 : 3.335

Molecular mass of CuSO4: 64 + 32 + 4(16) = 160

Molecular mass of H2O: 2(1) +16 = 18

5.405 3.335
Mole Ratio of CuSO4 : H2O is : =0.0338 :0.185 1:5
160 18

So the formula of hydrated salt is CuSO45H2O
