A. LESSON PREVIEWIREVIEW 1)
Introduction (2 mins)
The new machine is born because there is a real or imagined need for it. It evolves from someone
conception of a device with which to accomplish a particular purpose. Form the conception
follows a study of the arrangement of the parts, the location and length of links (which may
include a kinematics study of the linkage), the places of gears, bolts, springs, cams, and other
elements of machines.

2) Gears, pulleys, etc. may be attached to shafts by force or shrink fits, by one or more of several kinds
of keys, by splines connections, or occasionally, by some especially devised means.

2) SPLINE:

This document is the property of PHINMA EDUCATION

Reversing torques and repeatedly applied torques are though on connections like those
previously described. Splined shafts make a stronger connection. Stralght-slded splines are
widely used in the automotive and other industries for permanent fits, for fits not intended
to slide under load, and for fits that will slide under load. The nominal dimensions of 4
,6,10-, and 16-spline fittings are given as taken from SAE standard, from which the detalils
of the various fits may be obtained. The nominal size is the major diameter D, and this Is
the maximum size of the fitting, since the tolerances given in the standard are negative
and the desired fit is obtained by varying the dimensions on the shaft.

Whenever there is a relative motion between two members, that member which controls the
motion of, guides, or supports the other is known as a bearing. This motion may be rotational,
translational, or a combination of the two.
Bearings may be classified as radial, thrust, or guide bearings. The common ball bearings or oil
lubricated cylindrical bearings used to support shafts are radial bearings since the load application
onto these bearings is radial to the axis of rotation of the supported shafts; radial bearing often are
referred to journal bearing carries a load collinear to the axis of possible rotation of the supported
member; bearing which carry the thrust from the propeller of an outboard motor or the weight of a
phonograph turntable are thrust bearings. Aguide bearing exist primarily to guide the motion ofof a
machine member without specific regard to the direction of load application; the cylinders
reciprocating pumps and the cross head bearing of double acting are engines are guide bearings.
