D EFINI T I ON O F TERMS
LIVE BIRTH- the complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of the product of the human conception.

FETAL DEATH- death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of a product of human
conception, fetus, or embryo
a. Early fetal death (abortion)- deathe prior to expulsion or extraction from the mother of a fetus or embryo
weighing 500 gm or less (about 20 weeks gestation)
b. Late fetal death (stillbirth)- death before expulsion, extraction, or delivery in which the fetal weight is
greater than 500 gm or if the weight is unknow, the duration of the pregnancy exceeds 20 completed weeks of
gestation.
c. Induced termination of pregnancy- the deliberate discontinuation of pregnancy- to produce other than a live
born neonate or to remove a dead fetus- that does not result in live birth.

BIRTH WEIGHT- the weight of neonate determined immediately after delivery or as soon thereafter, as
deemed feasible. it should expressed in gram.
D EFINI T I ON O F TERMS
GESTATIONAL AGE- the number of completed weeks that have elapsed between the first day of the last
menstrual period and the date of delivery irrespective of whether the gestation results in a live birth or fetal
death. All neonates can be defined in categories for birth weight: AGA (Appropriate for Gestational Age), SGA
(Small for Gestational Age ), LGA (Large for Gestational Age)

LOW BIRTH WEIGHT (LBW) NEONATE- any neonate, regardless of gestational age, whose weight at birth is
less than 2500 grams

VERY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT (VLBW) NEONATE- any neonate, regardless of gestational age, whose weight at
birth is 1000-1500 grams

EXTREMELY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT (ELBW) NEONATE- any neonate, regardless of gestational age, whose
weight at birth is <1000 grams
