New York is a big city with lots of neighborhoods. Where should you live?
New York City is large, but is logically laid out (for the most part) as reference to any city map
will demonstrate. On the whole, numbered streets run east to west and avenues run north to
south (except Broadway which cuts diagonally across the avenues). Addresses on streets
(east/west) start at zero at Fifth Avenue and increase as they progress towards the rivers
(Hudson River on the West side, East River on the East side). Named streets, especially in
the village and to the south run without scheme so reference to a detailed map will be
required.

Helpful reminders:
Apartments in Manhattan usually do not become available until 1-2 months before the move- in
date. It is typical that they do not become available until less than one month before the move-in
date.
Apartments leave the market quickly. When you are out looking, be ready to put down an
application and even a deposit if you find a place you like because if you wait, you could lose it.
Remember to pay attention to public transportation when you are looking for an apartment. A map of
the NYC Subway system can be found here: https://map.mta.info/#@40.70949,-73.97853,14z
