QUESTION 1: READ FOR MEANING – TEXT A
Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
TEXT A:
1 We know that therapy is a crucial tool for managing conditions like depression, anxiety, 1
and bipolar disorder. But in an interview with The New York Times published today,
rapper Jay-Z gave a few perfect examples of why therapy can be beneficial for basically
everyone - regardless of whether they're dealing with a clinical anxiety disorder or
everyday stress. 5
2 "I grew so much from the experience," the 4:44 artist tells The Times. "But I think the
most important thing I got is that everything is connected. Every emotion is connected
and it comes from somewhere. Being aware of it in everyday life puts you at such a ...
you're at such an advantage," he explains.
3 He went on to explain that there were a lot of fights in his neighbourhood that started 10
with, "What you looking at? Why you looking at me? You looking at me?” And, through
therapy, he realised, "Oh, you think I see you. You’re in this space where you’re hurting,
and you think I see you, so you don’t want me to look at you... You don't want me to see
your pain. So you put on this shell of this tough person that's really willing to fight me
and possibly kill me 'cause I looked at you." "Knowing that and understanding that 15
changes life completely," he says.
4 It also impacted the way he thought about racism. "You realise that if someone's racist
toward you, it ain't about you. It's about their upbringing and what happened to them,
and how that led them to this point," he says. "And once I understand that, instead of
reacting to that with anger, I can provide a softer landing and maybe, 'Aw, man, is you 20
O.K.?'"
5 Therapy can be a great way to simply learn more about your emotions, how they
influence your behaviour, and how they shape your interactions with those around you.
As Jay-Z's story illustrates, therapy isn't just for those with diagnosed mental illnesses,
(although it can be invaluable for those of who deal with those issues). It's also the 25
perfect place to examine your relationships with friends, co-workers, or loved ones in an
objective and non-judgmental, safe space.
6 Of course, Jay-Z explains that he didn't just call up a therapist, he found one through a
friend. And referrals are a great place to start. But what works for your friend might not 30
be right for you. So, those of us who aren't celebrities may have better luck trying the
databases at Psychology Today or Good Therapy. And, yes, that might require calling a
few people and requesting a quick consultation before making a decision. But there are
several low-cost text and remote therapy options available these days, too. Whatever
your situation, you deserve to have the space and time to maintain your mental health.

QUESTION 3: SUMMARISING IN YOUR OWN WORDS
Carefully read TEXT B below entitled “Teenagers can benefit from meditation”
NOTE:
You are required to do the following:
Teens are under more pressure today than in previous generations. This massive increase
in stress and anxiety is believed to have caused an increase in teenage attention disorders.
Often they believe they’re doing things wrong. That makes it difficult to focus on the
present.
Meditation can help. Starting is easy. Have your teen sit and focus on something in the
now, such as their breathing. Their mind, speeding along, will take a bit to calm, but once
their thoughts have slowed, they can let go of focusing on their breath and take in what’s
around them.
The key is to observe without letting themselves make a judgement. This is especially
important when their thoughts inevitably turn inward. These thoughts are to be examined
and let go. If their train of thought starts running away with them, they’re to go right back to
focusing on their breathing and nothing more. It sounds simple, but the actual practice of it
will take some time to do reliably. Studies show that over time, meditation increases the
grey matter density in your brain, helping with memory, empathy, and decision-making.
Meditation also dismantles the connections between the medial prefrontal cortex,
responsible for your perspective of self, and the amygdala, which is where fear comes
from. The brain then reconnects the amygdala to the lateral prefrontal cortex, which is what
allows you to see the situation from a rational standpoint.
Along with the hard science of meditation, there are also numerous emotional benefits. By
helping our teens to learn to stop, clear the mind, and just look at things as they are, we’re
not only helping them to unload a lot of constant mental weight, but also to better manage
their emotions. When it comes to depression, teens’ ability to observe their own thoughts
without judgment and recognize emotional triggers gives them more self-understanding. It
can help lessen over-thinking and keep them from getting caught up in a downward spiral.

1 Research shows that people who expect stress are actually less stressed − when we 1
disabuse ourselves of the silly notion that things will always be easy and our day will
generally go as planned − we are more prepared to handle the curveballs life likes to
throw at us. Let teens know their stress is an entirely normal reaction to achallenge. It’s
not their fault or something they’ve done wrong. And the best part? There’s lots of things 5
they can do about it in order to feel better!A gentle mindful breathing exercise can help -
you can use the script below (approximate time - 5 minutes, allowing time for pauses):
Sit in a comfortable posture, with your spine upright and your shoulders rolled down and
back. Close your eyes, if that feels comfortable for you, and just allow your breath to be
natural. As best you can, bring your attention to your breath, noticing when you are 10
breathing in…and when you are breathing out.
A big part of what stresses us out is the story we tell ourselves about
2 what’shappening. Encourage your teen to stop when he or she is stressed and ask
yourself, “What’s the story?” Am I telling myself that I’ll fail the test, or that no one likes
me? Ask if they can drop the story and just notice what is actually happening. When 15
we’re stressed, it puts the brain in a fearful state and therefore we start to pay more
attention to threats, which only makes the stress worse! Encourage your teen to notice
the things that aregood, or even just okay, right now. We can challenge ourselves to
notice ten things that are beautiful, helpful, kind, or pleasant. Devices contribute to our
stress in numerous ways as they distract us from our direct experience, the emails and 20
notifications aggravate our worries, and social media contributes to FOMO and lots of
unhelpful comparisons. Disconecting from technology reconnects you to your
experience!
