GE 101 – UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

SELF – it is defined as the cognitive and affective representation of one’s identity

COGNITIVE – it refers to the thinking process of a person

AFFECTIVE – it refers to the feelings or emotions of a person

IDENTITY – it is the fact of being who and what you are as a person

PERSONALITY – it is the total being of a person or an individual

KNOWING ONESELF – is to understand oneself fully

 To understand one’s own emotions, desires and abilities


 To understand your strengths and weaknesses
 To understand your passion and fears
 To understand your desires and dreams
 To understand your thoughts and feelings
 To understand your likes and dislikes
 To understand your tolerance and limitations

Understanding yourself is understanding other people and understanding other people is also
understanding yourself.

WHOLE PERSON DEVELOPMENT – it is the ability for someone to know themselves, know how
to improve themselves, know others and know how to help others improve

1. Physiological – it refers to the physical body and how this affects the other aspects of a
person

2. Cognitive – it refers to the thinking process of a person

3. Psychological – it refers to a person’s way of thinking, feeling and behaving

4. Social – it refers to the relationship a person has with other people

5. Spiritual – it refers to the higher beliefs, ideals and values a person adheres to which
help guide the person in achieving personal happiness and fulfillment

– person and GOD relationship

CHALLENGES AND PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED FROM ADOLESCENCE TO ADULTHOOD

CHALLENGES : Identity VS Role Confusion

Identity – it is the fact of being who and what you are as a person
Role Confusion – it involves the individual not being sure about themselves or their
place in a society

PROBLEMS:

1. Idealism – it is the practice of forming or pursuing ideals especially unrealistically


2. Reckless Behavior – it is the conscious disregard of a substantial and unjustifiable
risk

3. Mimic Negative Behavior – you are trying to imitate someone

4. Socializing among male and female adolescents – by means of social networking you
go on talking to someone whom you are not very much acquainted with

5. Sexual Experimentation – this experimentation ends up in disaster

CHALLENGES – it is a demanding task that an individual wishes to overcome

PROBLEMS – it is something difficult to deal with or understand that hinders the progress of an
individual

DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS AND TASK AND ADOLESCENT NEED TO LEARN, DEVELOP AND ACQUIRE

1. Developing Occupational Skills – are skills that can help the adolescent develop
responsibility as a preparation for gainful employment

Examples:

 Good Communication Skills


 Critical Thinking
 Working well with a team
 Self Motivation
 Being flexible
 Determination and Persistence
 Being a quick learner

2. Self Reliance – it is the ability to depend on yourself to get things done and to meet
your own needs
Examples :

 Paying your own bills


 Taking care of yourself

3. Ability to manage their own finances – be or being able to discern what is the
difference between “wants and needs” and be able to learn self control when
handling their finances

4. Social Responsibility – adolescents should be able to see beyond themselves, take


into consideration the greater community around them and see their role in
improving and developing these communities

5. Mature Orientation – as a matured oriented person, you are doing those


achievements and accomplishments for yourself and not for other people

6. Personal Responsibility – to be fully responsible for their own decisions and actions
by owning them, become aware of the repercussions or results of the decision they
make and be mature enough to own these results and refrain from putting blame on
others for the results of their decisions and actions

7. Positive Attitude Towards Work – developing a positive and healthy attitude towards
work means that we see work as an expression of our love for people who are
important to us including ourselves

GENDER, GENDER IDENTITY AND GENDER EXPRESSION

Gender – it is either of the two sexes, male and female

Gender Identity – it is defined as a personal conception of one’s self as male or female

Gender Expressions – is the way in which a person expresses their gender identity, typically
through their appearance, dress and behaviour

LGBT – an initialism for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender

Lesbian – feel sexual attraction to same sex as women to women

Gay – attracted only to same sex as men to men

Bisexual – feel sexual attraction to both men and women

Transgender – are people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were
thought to be at birth

CHALLENGES AND PROBLEMS FACED BY LGBT IN THE PHILIPPINES

1. Discrimination, Bullying, Physical & Sexual Assault

Effects:

 Stress
 Depression
 Suicide
 Feeling unlove, alone and lonely
 Rejected and Isolated

2. Health Problems

Examples:

 Sexual Disease ( HIV, AIDS, STD )


 Breast Cancer
 Cervical Cancer
 Hepatitis

3. Mental Health & Substance Abuse

Example:

 Taking or over using of illegal drugs

Personal Identity – refers to a sense of self that a person develops over their life. Your personal
identity is a mix of how you see yourself and how others perceive you.
