Appendix 2
How much can you learn in a month?
I work for a magazine, which was doing an article about Americans learning foreign languages. As
an experiment, they asked me to learn a completely new language for one month. Then I had to go
to the country and take some tests’ to see if I could “survive” in different situations. I decided to
study Portuguese because I’ve always been fascinated by Brazilian culture and really wanted to
travel there.
I took a one-month intensive course at a language school in Atlanta. At first, Portuguese sounded
like Ukrainian to my ear. Luckily, I found that some words were similar to English, such as
computador (computer) and musica (music). However, the pronunciation turned out to be extremely
difficult for me. Some of the sounds are hard to imitate because we don’t use them in English.
Also, the spelling is tricky until you get used to it. For example, the letter ‘r’ at the beginning of a
word often sounds like an ‘h’ in English, and the letter ‘o’ at the end sounds like ‘ooh’. So Rio
sounds almost like ‘hee-ooh.’ Wow!
My course finished yesterday, and I’m traveling to Brazil next week for my tests. A local guide
named Fabiana will go with me and will give me a score of 1-10 These are the tests and the rules:

Tests
You have to...
1. get a taxi.
2. order a drink in a cafe.
3. ask for directions (and follow them).
4. call and ask to speak to someone.
5. ask somebody what time it is.

Rules
• you can’t use a dictionary or phrasebook.
• you can’t speak English at any time.
• you must not use your hands or mime.
