LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 1

ILLUSTRATING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS

Name of the Learner:_________________________ Section: _____________

School: ___________________________________ Date:________________

I. Learning Competency: Illustrates Polynomial Functions (M10AL-IIa-1)

II. Key Concepts:

A Polynomial Function is a function of the form

( ) + , ≠0

where n is a nonnegative integer , ,… are real numbers called

coefficients, is the leading term, is the leading coefficient, and is the
constant term.

 A degree in a polynomial function is the highest exponent of that equation,

which determines the most number of solutions that a function could have
and the most number of times a function will cross the x-axis when graphed.

Example: Identify the degree of each polynomial function.

1. f(x)= Identify the exponent

The degree is 4.
2. f(x)= – 4x + 3 Identify the highest exponent
The degree is 2.
3. f(x) = y y + 4 Add the exponents of each term and the
highest exponent will be the degree of the polynomial.
The degree is 4.

 Leading coefficients of polynomial are the numbers written in front of the

variable with the highest exponent.
Example: Identify the leading coefficient of each polynomial function.
1. f(x)= – 2x + 3 The highest exponent is 2, which means that the
leading coefficient is 5.

2. f(x)= – 4x The highest exponent is 5, which means that the

leading coefficient is -8.

1
 The constant term of a polynomial is the term of degree 0; it is the term in
which the variable does not appear.
Example: Identify the constant term of each polynomial function.
1. f(x)= – 4x + 3 The term that has no variable is 3, which means the
constant term is 3.
2. f(x)= + 2x + 4 The term that has no variable is 4, which means the
constant term is 4.

A Polynomial functions may also be written using f(x) or y and sometimes

represented by a set of P ordered pairs (x,y).

Example: ( ) and
are both polynomial functions.

A function is a polynomial functions if:

 Powers of any term of a polynomial function has no negative exponent.

For example:
f(x) = + + 3x + 2
It is not a polynomial function because there is a term which contains a
negative power.

 Powers of any term of a polynomial function is neither a fraction nor a

decimal.
For example:
f(x) = + + 3x + 6
It is not a polynomial function because there is a term whose power is
a fraction.

 The variables of a polynomial function must not be placed on the

denominator.
For example:
f(x) = - + -3
It is not a polynomial function because the literal coefficient is placed
on the denominator.

 The variables of a polynomial function are not inside the radical symbol.
For example:
f(x) = + + √ +2

It is not a polynomial function because the literal coefficient (variable x)

is place inside the radical symbol.

2
Standard Form of Polynomial Function
Terms of polynomial may be written in no particular order. However, if
the terms of x are written in decreasing powers, we can say tha t the
polynomial function is in standard form.

Examples:

1. Write f(x)= + + 3x + 2 in standard form.

Arrange each term in decreasing power.
f(x)= + 3x + 2 is the standard form.

2. Write f(x) = 2 + 2 + 22 + in standard form.

Arrange each term in decreasing power.
y= 2 + 2 + 22 is the standard form.

There are various types of polynomial functions based on the degree of

the polynomial. The most common types are:

• Zero Polynomial Function (degree 0): ( ) = =

• Linear Polynomial Function (degree 1): ( ) = +𝑏= +𝑏
• Quadratic Polynomial Function (degree 2): ( ) = +𝑏 +𝑐
• Cubic Polynomial Function (degree 3): ( ) = +𝑏 +𝑐 +𝑑
• Quartic Polynomial Function (degree 4): ( ) = +𝑏 +𝑐 +𝑑 +𝑒
where , b, c, 𝑑 and are constants.

Example:

Degree of Type of Leading Leading Constant

the Function Term Coefficient Term
Polynomial
1. 𝑦 = 8 −4 + 2 + 22
4 QUARTIC 8 8 22

2. 𝑦 = 3 +6 + 2x 3 CUBIC 6 6 0

3. 𝑦 = 10 + 6x + 4 2 QUADRATIC 10 10 4
