Rectifier – General Data

• The rectifier section consists of:

• one 6 pulse rectifier (or 12 pulse rectifier as option)
• with SCR (thyristor) technology
• developed for general use, both as a supply system for continuous
loads and also as a battery-charger.

• Main operating parameters can be adapted and customise:

• according to the specific application/requirement,
• however all the general control structure, the user interface and the
main operating procedure remain the same.

• All functions of control and regulation are carried out

completely digital, by means of:
• a microprocessor control, and
• the user interface, which is the front panel,
• that allows to vary most of the operating parameters such as the
charging voltage, maximum battery current, etc.
Rectifier – Basic Principle

• The RTB.2 rectifier converts the alternate AC voltage in the

input:
• into a continuous output DC voltage that is stabilized in voltage and
controlled in current,
• by means of a three-phase SCR rectifier bridge (6 pulses version) or a
couple of bridges connected in parallel (12 pulses version).

• The galvanic isolation of the input mains is carried out by

means of a rectifier input isolation transformer.

Rectifier – Basic Structure

• AC side power circuit: The input mains is filtered by the

high frequency emission filter (EMI) and enters the primary
of the input transformer T1, trough the Q1 breaker.

• Adaption and isolation transformer: The transformer T1

adapts the AC mains voltage to the DC value available from
the battery. The transformer also provides isolation between
the AC and DC sections. The supply voltage for the control
logics (redundant from the battery) is taken from the
secondary side of the input transformer.

• Fuses and SCR bridge: The secondary side of the

transformer is connected, through the protection fuses, to
the total-controlled 3-phase bridge.
Rectifier – Basic Structure

• L-C filter: The DC voltage, rectified ad controlled by the bridge, is

filtered by a L1-C1 group (series inductance, parallel capacitance)
calculated in order to limit the maximum AC ripple content to a
value lower than the specified one.

• Output: At the output, the feedback voltage for voltage control is

taken; the measurement of total output current (for the total
limitation) is taken and the measurement of charge/discharge
current and voltage of battery. The RTB.2 output is connected to
the DC loads via the rectifier output breaker Q2 (ROCB).

• Battery: The rectifier output is connected to the battery via the

breaker Q10 (BCB). In normal conditions the battery is kept in
floating charge and will absorb a negligible charging current; in
case of mains failure the battery will supply the loads according
the specified autonomy time.

Control Circuit:

• Synchronization card: The DR-DSP-SYNC synchronization card

manages the synchronization signals taken from the mains and used to
control the SCR’s turn-on delay angle. It also manages the voltage and
current measures from the characterization of the input mains.

• AC side control logic supply: The control logic is directly supplied from
the mains via the auxiliary transformer T10.

• Rack control cards: The rack control logic, named DR-DSP, is composed
by the following cards:

Rectifier – Basic Structure

• Firing card: The control logic drives the SCR’s turn-on via the card DR-
FIR which is connected to the DR-DSP logic. The DR-FIR card turns on
the thyristors on basis of the switching pattern generated by the DR-DSP.

• Front panel: The logic rack is connected to the user interface centralized
panel, which is used to send commands, change settings, retrieve
information the measures and active alarms.

• Feedback voltages: The regulation of the DC voltage is performed on the

basis of the output voltage feedback; control logic monitors the load
voltage, battery voltage and discharge voltage which is acquired by the
interface card INT-DR-DSP.

• Feedback current: The control logic monitors the total current Itot for
overload protection purposes and the battery recharging current in order to
manage charging cycles (battery current limitation).

• The alarm codes are stored in the event log (history log)
• The history logs the event, that is both the alarm and its
automatic reset (if any), indicating the reset with a star
next to the code (max. 500 history event)
• Besides the alphanumeric code of the alarm, the history
log indicates date, hour and minute of the event
