8 Course Description
This five unit course was developed for the would-be mechanical engineer for the
study of basic factors and approach in mechanical and engineering structure
design; stresses and strain in bodies subjected to compression, tension, shear,
bending and torsion; theory of flexure, deflection of beams; combined stresses;
repeated and impact loading; fatigue and theory of failure.
9 Program Upon the completion of the program, the
Outcomes Louisian Mechanical Engineering graduate shall
be able to:
1) Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural
science, engineering fundamentals and an
engineering specialization to the solution of
complex engineering problems.
2) Identify, formulate, research literature and
analyze complex engineering problems reaching
substantiated conclusions using first principles of
mathematics, natural sciences and engineering
sciences.
3) Create, select and apply appropriate
10 Course At the end of the course, the Louisian Mechanical
Learning Engineering students must be able to:
Outcomes 1) Define, classify, solve and relate simple stress and
strain in a deformable body due to applied loads,
pressure, and changes in temperature.
2) Define, design and solve mechanical systems
involving shafts, flange couplings and springs.
3) Apply principles of mathematics and physical
sciences to determine the shear load, moment,
deflection of deformable bodies.
