Newman Task:
Year 8 Newman (8N) Mathematics students will be required to attempt a Newman component (10mins)
directly after the Year 8 Task 4. Any students outside 8N who would like to complete the Newman section
must make that known in the notification receipt found below.
Additional Information
As students are expected to be at school for face to face teaching exams and tasks will be
conducted in your class time with your teacher supervising and your mark/result recorded.
If you have chosen not to attend school you may attempt the task at home at the specified
time on the notification but your mark/result will only be used as an indication to give you
an estimate based on previous performances.
-This is an open book exam. By open book it means hard copies of support material (Maths
exercise books and study notes only are allowed)
-The use of the internet to search is not permitted
-The exam will be released digitally via email as a google form containing 36 multiple choice
questions during your assigned Mathematics lesson on the 10th of November. You will have 40
minutes to complete the task and submit it.
-Failure to submit the task by the time indicated will be subsequent to further consequences and
could result in a zero mark.
-The form will allow you to select one response for each question- A, B, C or D.
-You will not be able to submit the form unless all questions have been attempted
-You will be allocated 40 minutes to submit your responses
Note: Students who require separate supervision and/or rest breaks will complete their task in a
room with DLN staff.
Notification Receipt: Click on the link to complete a Google Form to confirm that you have
received this task notification.
Student on Leave
In the event that students and/or parents have prior knowledge of a student’s inability to attend due to family commitments
or travel they must request leave via a letter addressed to the Principal (forms are available from the front office)
explaining the nature of the leave. Students must speak with the KLA Coordinator regarding these matters after the task
notification has been issued.
All assessment tasks and Examination blocks are advertised in the Assessment Handbook well in advance each year.
In the event that students and/or parents have prior knowledge of a student’s inability to attend due to family commitments
or travel they must request leave via a letter addressed to the Principal (forms are available from the front office)
explaining the nature of the leave. Students may not necessarily be able to sit missed task or examinations at alternate
times.
Probability
❏ Describe events using language of ‘at least’, exclusive ‘or’ (A or B but not both), inclusive ‘or’ (A
or B or both) and ‘and’
❏ Recognise the difference between mutually exclusive and non-mutually exclusive events, eg when
a die is rolled, 'rolling an odd number' and 'rolling an even number' are mutually exclusive events;
however, 'rolling an even number' and 'rolling a 2' are non-mutually exclusive events
❏ Describe compound events using the following terms:'at least','at most','not','and',pose problems
that involve the use of these terms, and solve problems posed by others
❏ Describe the effect of the use of 'and' and 'or'
❏ Classify compound events using inclusive 'or' and exclusive 'or', eg 'choosing a male or a female' is
exclusive as one cannot be both, whereas 'choosing a male or someone left-handed' could imply
exclusivity or inclusivity
❏ Recognise that the word 'or' on its own often needs a qualifier, such as 'both' or 'not both', to
determine inclusivity or exclusivity
❏ Represent events in two-way tables and Venn diagrams and solve related problems
❏ Construct Venn diagrams to represent all possible combinations of two attributes from given or
collected data
❏ Use given data to calculate missing values in a Venn diagram, eg the number of members that
have both attributes or the number of members that have neither attribute
❏ Construct two-way tables to represent the relationships between attributes
❏ Use given data to calculate missing values in a two-way table (Problem Solving)
❏ Convert between representations of the relationships between two attributes in Venn diagrams
and two-way tables
