Individual Assignment
1 / Definition
In order to learn this unit, you should know what a paragraph is. A paragraph is a group of
related sentences that develops one main idea, which is the topic of the paragraph. Each
paragraph is a separate unit. It is marked by indenting the first word from the left-hand
margin or by leaving extra space above and below the paragraph.
2/ Types of Paragraph
There are three main types of paragraph in English: Narrative, descriptive, and expository.
a) Narrative Paragraph
A narrative paragraph tells a story. Look at this model. This is a story about one trip and
what happened before, during, and after it. You can, of course, tell stories of shorter or
greater length. The most important feature of a narrative paragraph is that it tells a
story.
b) Descriptive Paragraphs
The second kind of paragraph is the descriptive paragraph. This kind of paragraph is
used to describe what something looks like. Description writing appeals to the senses,
so it tells how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, or sounds. A good description is
like a “sord picture”: the reader can imagine the object, place or person in his or her
mind. A writer of a good description is like an artist who paints a picture that can be
seen clearly in the mind of the reader.
c) Expository Paragraphs
The goal of expository writing is to explain something to the reader. You can explain
something in many ways. Some of these are:
3. Parts of a Paragraph
A paragraph consists of three kinds of sentences that develop the writer’s main idea,
opinion, or feeling about a subject. These sentences are (1) The topic sentence, (2) The supporting
sentence, and (3) The concluding sentence. The writer may add a final comment after the
conclusion.
a) The Topic Sentence
The Topic Sentence is the most general statement of the paragraph. It is the key
sentence because it names the subject and the controlling idea: the writer’s main idea,
opinion, or feeling about the topic.
The next part of the paragraph is the supporting sentence. They develop the topic
sentence by giving specific details about the topic. In order to choose details to support
the topic sentence, rephrase it as a question, and then answer the question with your
supporting sentence.
After you have finished writing the last sentence supporting the main point of a
paragraph, you must end the paragraph with a concluding sentence. The sentence tells
the reader that the paragraph is finished, and it completes the development of the
subject of the paragraph.
The concluding sentence is like the topic sentence because both are general statements.
However, the topic sentence is usually the first sentence, a general statement that
introduces the topic to be discussed in the paragraph. The concluding sentence is also a
general statement, but is the last sentence and ends the paragraph.
My favorite holiday for last year. I went to Koh Kong beach with my family. We went
there by bus on weekend. The trip was very long and hard. The seat was very small and
uncomfortable. We stayed in a hotel near the beach. The hotel was very big and
beautiful. There were two swimming-pools, big gardens, a disco, a gym and five
restaurants. We met a lot of Khmer people at the hotel. It was very hot in summer. We
got up early in the morning because we went to an excursion and looked at the sunrise
on the ocean. The beaches were very nice in Koh Kong province. We went to a small
safari. We saw birds, sharks, crocodiles…. In the afternoon we went to shopping. I
bought t-shirts, pictures, towels, coffee and figures. We had dinner in the hotel. The food
was very good. There were pizza, meat, fish, fruit, typical Khmer's food and ice-cream,
etc. We stayed in Koh Kong province for three days. We came back to Phnom Penh by
Taxi. We were sleeping on the trip but it was wonderful journey.
