What is an essay?

 The word essay derives from the Latin word exagium which means to present a
case.
 It is a prose composition with a focused subject of discussion.
 It is an extended piece of writing that presents and supports a thesis
proposition.
 It is a piece of composition that discusses a thing, a person, a problem, or an
issue in a way that the writer demonstrates his knowledge by offering a new
perspective, a new opinion, a solution, or new suggestions or
recommendations,
 It is a well – organized composition comprising several elements that work to
build an argument, describe a situation, narrate an event, or state a problem
with a solution.

You write an essay to present a point of view that is valid and to persuade the
reader. You are making a case for the validity of a particular point of view,
analysis, interpretation, or set of facts or procedures.

Consequently, essays all rely not only on the validity of the facts they
communicate but also on the selection, critical evaluation, organization, and
presentation of these facts,

What are the elements of an essay?

An essay has three basic elements; each element plays its respective role to
persuade the audience, convince the readers, and convey the meanings an
author intends to convey.

5
 Introduction

It is intended to introduce the topic of the essay. First, it hooks the readers through
the ‘hook,’ which is an anecdote, a good quote, a verse, or an event relevant to
the topic. It intends to attract the readers.

Following the hook, the author gives background information about the topic,
which is intended to educate readers about the topic. The final element of the
introduction is a thesis statement. This is the concise and compact sentence or
two, which introduces evidence to be discussed in the body paragraphs.

When the readers have gone through the introduction, it is supposed that they
have full information about what they are going to read.

Example of essay introduction

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID – 19) has created a

global health crisis that has had a deep impact on the way we perceive our
world and our everyday lives. Not only the rate of contagion and patterns of
transmission threatens our sense of agency, but the safety measures put in place
to contain the spread of the virus also require social distancing by refraining from
doing what is inherently human, which is to find solace from others

What is a thesis statement?

Every paper you write should have a main point, a main idea, or central
message. The argument(s) you make in your paper should reflect this main idea.
The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is what we call a thesis
statement.

Thesis statement should be specific - it should cover only what you will discuss in
your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.

Example of thesis statement:

Digital Literacy Skills

With more information readily available than ever before, it is crucial that
students are prepared to examine the material they are reading and determine
whether or not it is a good source or if it has misleading information. Teaching
students digital literacy and helping them to understand the difference between
opinion or propaganda from legitimate, real information is integral.

Example of an argumentative thesis statement:

High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue

community service projects before entering college in order to increase their
maturity and global awareness.
6
 Body

The structure of body paragraph starts with a topic sentence, followed by

further explanation, examples, evidences, and supporting details. If it is a simple
non-research essay, then there are mostly examples of what is introduced in the
topic sentences. However, if the essay is research-based, there will be
supporting details such as statistics, quotes, charts, and explanations.

The function of body paragraph is to give more information and convince the
readers about the topic. It could be persuasion, explanation, or clarification as
required.

 Conclusion

It is the last part of an essay. It is also the crucial part that sums up the
arguments, or concludes the description, narration, or event. It is comprised of
three major parts:
 The first part is rephrasing of the thesis statement given at the end of the
introduction. It reminds the readers what they have read about.

 The second part is the summary of major points discussed in the body
paragraphs.

 The third part is closing remarks, which are suggestions, recommendations, a

call to action, or the author’s own opinion of the issue.

As far as the conclusion is concerned, its major function is to sum up the

argument, issue or explanation. It makes the readers feel that now they are
going to finish their reading. It provides them sufficient information about the
topic. It gives new perspective, a new sight, a new vision, or motivates them to
take action.

The conclusion needs also to satisfy readers that they have read something
about the topic, have got something to tell others, and that they have got
merely read it for the sake of reading.

What are the writing process?

Writing is a process that involves at least five distinct steps:

 Prewriting
 Drafting
 Revising
 Editing and Proofreading
 Publishing

It is known as a recursive process. While you are revising, you might have to
return to the prewriting step to develop and expand your ideas.

7

1. Prewriting – in this stage, you plan what you are going to write. You choose
your topic, identify your audience and purpose, brainstorm ideas,
and organize your information.

2. Drafting – in this stage, you start with a working thesis and then write your
ideas in sentences and paragraphs. You follow your prewriting plan
to create a first draft of your essay.

3. Revising – this stage involves making changes that improve your writing. You
focus on large – scale elements of the essay, such as, overall
organization or logical flow of support, effective thesis statement,
interesting introduction and concluding paragraphs with clear topic
sentences, appropriate tone and style for intended audience and
purpose.

4. Editing and Proofreading – this is the stage of your essay where you polish your
essay. You focus on smaller-scale yet important essay elements,
such as, clarity in sentence structure, appropriate word choice,
correct spelling and grammar, and accurate document format.

5. Publishing – in this final stage, you choose a way to present your work to an
audience.

When you move onto different topic, start a new paragraph. Use appropriate
transitional words and phrases to show the connection between your ideas.

Example of transitional words:

Meanwhile In conclusion Firstly For instance Thus

Furthermore On the contrary Such as Afterward Next

WRITING CHALLENGE – Write It : Essay

Below are the social issues in the Philippines. Choose one topic then write an
essay with the elements (introduction, body, conclusion).

o Philippines’ Response to Pandemic

o Academic Freeze Petition in the Philippines
o The Economic Impact of the COVID 19 in the
ACADEMIC FREEZE PETITION IN THE PHILIPPINES
" Education must continue'" and No if's, no buts. Whatever happens, it has to be continue. By whatever, it has to be
continue. We owe it to our learners." These statements are from DEPED Secretary Briones in the interview in
Mangahas Interview last February 1, 2021. This is very clear that in the middle of a pandemic and even a typhoon
would pass in the country, there is no room for an excuse to stop education. However, many questions still are
unheard of: Do students or learners approved of this kind of learning? How can they be assured that students would
be learning in this kind of learning? How can parents manage their time when they are boring, but at the same time,
they are teaching their children? Ho about the students in the rural area can they manage to continue their study?
Ho can teachers be sure that the modules they made are correct? Many questions where never been answered and
still question by everyone. This can give safety measures, but the students, teachers, and parents have pressure,
stress, and anxiety.

President Rodrigo Duterte had previously announced that face-to-face classes are not an option until a vaccine is
introduced, given that the number of cases continues to spike. Despite DepEd’s assurance that every student should
handle the new form of learning, difficulties arise for those who lack resources. Many people are disapproved, but
DepEd doesn't see the tendency that many children can't still attend this online class, and parents can't divide their
time as to how they can manage work and teach their children. Like in our family, I have four siblings; one high
school and two elementary the other one is still a year old. My mother is having a hard time teaching my two siblings
in elementary she can't teach them together at the same time, and my mother can't also teach and take my little
brother, who is one year old. My father is the only one who works for us, and while my other brother ho is in high
school, I manage our studies and modules on our own, with no guidance and just ourselves. On my mother's side, it
is hard for her to help my father prepare to go to Public Market as we have a stall there, my mother to do laundry
for us, sometimes the one who cooks dinner. My brother and I are the ones who manage our sari-sari store at the
house, taking care of our other siblings and cleaning the house or doing some household chores that sometimes we
don't have time for or our modules. I sometimes sleep late and wake up early, from five to six o'clock in the morning,
and this our routine. This is just a minimal situation, but how about some citizens like those in rural areas who don't
have access to the internet and so far from school? DepEd is too impulsive in deciding about this education matter;
our network is also slow that can sometimes cause a student to be late at online classes or late o passing their tasks.
Besides, not everyone in the country Philippines can afford a cellphone, laptop, and tablet.

Amidst of pandemic, students, teachers, and parents are battling o pressure, stress, and anxiety brought by online
classes and foremost to the people who are poor and rural areas. May DepEd thinks about the situation happened
as how they decide to haste. Students and parents should be heard in this matter should listen to many people in
this kind o matter. Still, no one listens and consider even in the middle o typhoon, the DepEd secretary answer how
easy the modules can be answered or pass, DepEd even didn't age support just like gadgets to those people who are
in need, in their department, they even corrupt a million for ham and cheese or their Christmas Party. How foolish is
it that they efficiently do things that many people manifest and sacrifice to take the class? Education is essential, but
how can we call it education if there is no learning anymore?
