Gimnazjum – Poziom podstawowy

TEACHER’S NOTES
This lesson is on the topic of films and the cinema but with a Christmas theme.
The exercises can be used alone or as a complete lesson.

Reading

When the students have completed the task, they compare answers in pairs and note the
clues in each text which give the answers.

A – 2 is correct because the film has ‘some of the best songs you will ever hear’ 4 is
correct because it is ‘for adults and children alike’ B – 3 is correct because it says ‘watch
it with your boyfriend or girlfriend’ C – 1 is correct because it is for ‘those aged 16 and
above’

Answers: A2, 4 B3 C1

After the reading, it may be worth looking at the highlighted vocabulary to make sure the
students understand it. They can do the reading task without knowing these words so
this should be done after the reading rather than before.

Discussion

This is not an exam task but a chance for students to talk about Christmas films. If the
students can’t think of five Christmas films, tell them to write down as many as they can.
Once the students have discussed the films in pairs, elicit some ideas about the best
Christmas film and ask for reasons for the students’ opinions.

Functions

When the students have completed the task, you could extend the activity by asking
them to make up short dialogues in which the other responses would be correct: e.g. 1
X: What did you think of the film yesterday? Y: It wasn’t very good. X: Would you like
some more cake? Y: No, thanks, I’m full.

Answers: 1a 2c 3a 4a

Use of English

Answers: 1. plays 2. funny 3. end 4. scary

Follow up:

It may be useful to give the students more practice of the topic language used in the
lesson by asking them to carry out a speaking or writing activity. Neither of these skills
are tested in this exam but they are a useful way to reinforce structures and vocabulary.

Possible ideas:

 Ask the students to write about a Christmas film in a similar way to either the
reading texts or the Use of English text.
 Ask the students to act out a role-play. One works in a DVD rental store, the other
is a customer looking for a Christmas film to rent. The students playing the shop
assistant can use their ideas from the discussion to describe films that the
customer might like.
