Aim of the Experiment: Study of standards and symbols (ANSI / ISA S-5.1)

ISA S- 5.1
 The purpose of this standard is to establish a uniform means of designating
instruments and instrumentation systems used for measurement and control.
 The standard is intended to provide sufficient information to enable anyone
reviewing any document depicting process measurement and control (who has a
reasonable amount of process knowledge) to understand the means of measurement
and control of the process.
 The standard is suitable for use in the chemical, petroleum, power generation, air
conditioning, metal refining, and numerous others, process industries.

Aim of the Experiment: Development of Process & Instrumentation diagram of typical

process

A piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is defined by the Institute of

Instrumentation and Control as follows:

 A diagram which shows the interconnection of process equipment and the

instrumentation used to control the process. In the process industry, a standard set of
symbols is used to prepare drawings of processes. The instrument symbols used in
these drawings are generally based on International Society of Automation (ISA)
Standard S5.1
 The primary schematic drawing used for laying out a process control installation.
 They usually contain the following information:
 Process piping, sizes and identification, including:
 Pipe classes or piping line numbers
 Flow directions
 Interconnections references
 Permanent start-up, flush and bypass lines
 Mechanical equipment and process control instrumentation and designation (names,
numbers, unique tag identifiers), including:
 Valves and their identifications (e.g. isolation, shutoff, relief
and safety valves)
 Control inputs and outputs (sensors and final elements, interlocks)
 Miscellaneous - vents, drains, flanges, special fittings,
sampling lines, reducers and increasers
 Computer control system
 Identification of components and subsystems delivered by others
 P&IDs are originally drawn up at the design stage from a combination of process
flow sheet data, the mechanical process equipment design, and the instrumentation
engineering design. During the design stage, the diagram also provides the basis for
the development of system control schemes, allowing for further safety and
operational investigations, such as a Hazard and operability study (HAZOP). To do
this, it is critical to demonstrate the physical sequence of equipment and systems, as
well as how these systems connect.
 P&IDs also play a significant role in the maintenance and modification of the

process after initial build. Modifications are red-penned onto the diagrams and are
vital records of the current plant design.

Aim of the Experiment: Prepare a loop wiring diagram and Cable schedule

Loop wiring diagram:

Loop diagrams serve many purposes. Several of these stated below:

 Design
 An extension of P&IDS, which show the components and accessories of the
instrument loop, connections between devices, and identification of
component action.
 The specification of instrument hardware items and a means of
communicating requirements to vendors
 Construction
 Panel instrumentation interconnections and checkout diagram
 Instrumentation installation references
 Instrumentation interconnections
 Instrumentation loop checkout
 Inspection and documentation
 Start-up
 Pre-start-up commissioning and calibration
 Training tool and aid
 Maintenance
 Troubleshooting
 Routine calibration
 Preventative and corrective maintenance tool
 Modification
 Rearrangement
 Reconstruction
 Enhancement

Cable Schedule:

 Cable Schedule is a document containing list of instrument cable. This document shows
cable as well as gland required by each instrument or connection. The information of the
cable schedule shall consists:
 Cable Number
 Cable Type / Specification
 Cable Size
 Cable Length
 Source and destination termination description
 Cable gland type and size for each incoming cable
 Purpose of Cable Schedule
 Estimate quantity of cable and total costs for a given job
 identify termination points from plan to actual job
 Identify specific cable during diagnosis and/or testing

Aim of the experiment: Prepare a Hook up drawings for installation of transmitters and
control valve.
 Hook-up drawing is a detailed drawing showing typical installation of instrument in a
correct manner so that instrument operates properly (gives accurate indication and prevent
any issued which could potentially affect the measurement such as liquid trap in gas
impulse line).
 Hook-up drawing indicates tubing slopes, position of instrument in reference to process
tapping point, scope break between instrument vs piping.
There are two types of hook-up drawing:
 Process Hook-Up
This hook-up drawing contains typical installations for instrument which connects to the
process
 Pneumatic Hook-Up
This hook-up drawing contains typical installations for instrument which requires
instrument air such as control valve, actuated valve
