HURRICANE WHO?
42- Tropical cyclones (43) are called typhoons in Asia and hurricanes in North and South America. 42- These
storms go around like a wheel turning to the left when they hit in the northern part of the world. They have wind
speeds of 60 kph or more. In the United States, the Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, Florida keeps an eye out for
hurricanes. When meteorologists detect a hurricane, they give it a name. They can use either a male or female
name. Why should tropical cyclones have names? 45- The name makes it easier for people to keep up with
information about a hurricane and its possible dangers.
The WMO, an international weather group, decides what names will be used. The WMO makes lists of names
using the English alphabet. Each name on the list starts with a different letter. The first hurricane of the year gets the
first name on that year’s list. The second hurricane gets the next name. 46- For example, if the first hurricane
is named Abel, the second might be named Betty. 47- The name lists do not include names beginning with the
letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z. There aren’t many names that begin with these letters.
Asian countries use a different list, which is made up by the WMO’s Typhoon Committee. This list has a few
personal names, but most of the names are of flowers, animals, trees, and other similar things.

A striking feature of Viet Nam’s remarkable progress over the last few decades is the rapid pace of
urbanization. In 1986, there were fewer than there are 30 million urban residents. Today there are 30
million. Cities have become strong growth forces, with urban areas growing twice as fast as the national
average rate, and contributing over half of the country’s gross domestic product.
Viet Nam needs to reshape its urbanization process to create more efficient cities - cities with
sufficient population densities are well connected internally, regionally, and well managed. In addition, in
line with Viet Nam's strong preference for social equity, cities will need to ensure the inclusion of all
residents, with no groups or areas “left behind."
Meanwhile, rural residents increasingly lag behind their urban counterparts in income and access to
services, leading many to migrate to cities. Migration presents challenges for urban management but also
opportunities to enhance labor mobility. Fortunately, these trends can be reversed.
For example, four years ago, Alley 76 in Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City was only narrow
enough for one motorbike to get through. Store owner Bui Thi Mai knows how a clean and efficient city can
make or break a business. The alley was often flooded with floating garbage and mosquitoes when it rained.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Experts in climatology and other scientists are becoming extremely concerned about the changes to our climate
which are taking place. Admittedly, climate changes have occurred on our planet before. For example, there have
been several ice ages or glacial periods. These climatic changes, however, were different from the modern ones in
that they occurred gradually and, as far as we know, naturally. The changes currently being monitored are said to be
the result not of natural causes, but of human activity. Furthermore, the rate of change is becoming alarmingly
rapid.
The major problem is that the planet appears to be warming up. According to some experts, this warming
process, known as global warming, is occurring at a rate unprecedented in the last 10,000 years. The implications
for the planet are very serious. Rising global temperatures could give rise to such ecological disasters as extremely
high increases in the incidence of flooding and of droughts. These in turn could have a harmful effect on
agriculture.
It is thought that this unusual warming of the Earth has been caused by so-called greenhouse gases, such as
carbon dioxide, being emitted into the atmosphere by car engines and modern industrial processes, for example.
Such gases not only add to the pollution of the atmosphere, but also create a greenhouse effect, by which the heat of
the sun is trapped. This leads to the warming up of the planet.
Politicians are also concerned about climate change and there are now regular summits on the subject, attended
by representatives from around 180 of the world’s industrialized countries. Of these summits, the most important
took place in Kyotoin Japanin 1997. There it was agreed that the most industrialized countries would try to reduce
the volume of greenhouse gas emissions and were given targets for this reduction of emissions.
It was also suggested that more forests should be planted to create so-called sinks to absorb greenhouse gases.
At least part of the problem of rapid climate change has been caused by too drastic deforestation. Sadly, the targets
are not being met. Even more sadly, global warnings about climate changes are often still being regarded as
scaremongering.
44. According to the passage, in what way did the climate changes in the ice ages differ from the modern ones?
A. They occurred naturally over a long period of time
B. They were partly intended.
C. They were wholly the result of human activity.
D. They were fully monitored by humans.
45. The word “alarmingly” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to __________.

46. According to the passage, agriculture could __________.
A. make the global warming more serious

C. give rise to many ecological disasters
D. be directly damaged by the rises in global temperature
47. Greenhouse gases cause the warming up of the Earth because they__________.
A. are emitted by car engines
B. trap heat from the sun
C. do not add to atmosphere pollution
D. are unusual gases

Creative urban planners continually seek new ways to make cities more satisfying places to live. One
versatile tool in this pursuit is the "green roof" which draw from fundamental precepts in architectural
design, horticulture, and urban development. At its most basis, a green roof system transforms a
conventional roof into a living roof by adding a waterproof membrane. The membrane is then covered with
drainage and filter layers, a growth medium (e.g. soil) and live plant. A green roof can be built on a flat or
graded surface, can be thick or thin, and can feature flowering plants. Familiar rooftop garden have plants in
pots or planters. A green roof goes further. It is an integral part of a building and one that offers ecological
and economic benefits, as well as aesthetic appeal.
Roofs covered in living plants were used in ancient Mesopotamia for aesthetic purposes (the famed
Hanging Garden of Babilon), in Viking settlements, and on the American Great Plains for basic shelter and
insulation (sod houses). The green roof as we know it, however, is a relatively recent creation. The first
modern green roof was developed in Germany during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their man function
was to slow water drainage that was straining storm-sewer systems in urban areas where natural vegetation
was scare. The idea subsequently spread through Europe and made a few inroads into some American
cities.
A wide range of environment benefits can result from the adoption of green roof. Preliminary
research suggests that living roofs help clean polluted urban air. For example, grass acts as a natural air
filter, removing each day 0.2 kilograms of airborne particulates from the air per square meter of grass-
covered surface. By converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen through photosynthesis, plants also help
limit the build-up of year to meet the annual oxygen requirement of an average human being.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
WHAT’S IN YOUR PHONE?
Armed with digital devices, young people are leading the way to a cashless future with 111%
increase in consumer use of mobile person-to-person payment methods between 2014 and 2017, according
to Boston-based research firm. Dylan Oesch-Emmel, a freshman at Tufts University, can count on one hand
the times he has used cash recently: to convert currency for a trip to Montreal, and for cab fare when his
smart phone died and he couldn’t use Uber.
“Quite frankly, I use zero cash,” said Oesch Emmel, 19, a Stoneham native. Like many in his age
bracket, Oesch-Emmel does his banking online, rarely uses an ATM, and keeps a credit card for backup.
Nearly all his purchases are made with payment apps on his iPhone 7 linked to his debit card: Venmo,
which lets you make and share payments with friends, to split dinner and ride home with friends, for
example, or goPuff to have the essentials of college life, such as shampoo, floss, and Cheetos, delivered to
his dorm.
Yet while younger people such as Oesch-Emmel don’t have much use for cash, the United States
actually lags other nations in moving toward a largely cashless financial system. Credit and debit cards have
been in wide use here for much longer, and the nation’s large, complex banking system makes it difficult to
adopt change quickly.
Shaun Ferrari, managing director of Currency Research, said electronic payment businesses are still
at the stage here where they are competing against each other more so than cash. “It appears as though
electronic forms of payment are cannibalizing each other rather than replacing cash,” Ferrari said. “Mobile
has a long way to go to be a significant player in the payment landscape in the US.”
Boston-based research firm Aite Group in February reported a 111 percent increase in consumer use
of mobile person-to-person payment methods between 2104 and 2017. A few of the big names are showing
commanding gains: Zelle had a 59 percent rise in processing volume in 2018, to $119 billion. Venmo, for its
part, processed $62 billion last year, up from $35 billion the year before One explanation for those
increases, said Talie Baker of the Aite Group, is the ability of payment systems to be made in real time,
instead of that lag people used to experience waiting for money to clear. This has made digital payments feel
the same as getting cash, more or less instant and around the clock.

Question 44. What does the passage primarily discuss?

A. The reason for the sluggish development of cash-consuming countries
B. The speculation that cash will eventually “go the way of dinosaurs”
C. The declining amount of cash in the financial system
D. The fact that cash are being rejected and the explanation for this

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
The increase in urbanization causes different problems. Air and water pollution are amongst the major issue we have
to tackle.
In the first place, cars, factories and burning waste emit dangerous gases that change the air quality in our cities and
pose threats to our health. Dangerous gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides cause respiratory diseases, for
instant, bronchitis and asthma. Those are also proved to have long-term effects on the environment.
Furthermore, with the increased population, it becomes difficult to manage the waste generated in cities. Most of the
waste is discharged or dumped into rivers or onto streets. The waste pollutes water and makes it unfit for human
consumption. Subsequently, it becomes more and more difficult for city dwellers to get clean water.36- Some cities
in Africa are unable to provide adequate water supply because most of the water is lost in pipe leakages. In fact, most
city dwellers in developing countries are forced to boil their water or to buy bottled water, which is very expensive.
There are several actions that could be taken to eradicate the problems described above. Firstly, 37- a simple solution
would be joining community efforts to address problems affecting your city. Ask your parents, friends and relatives to
join in as well. These efforts might include clean-up campaigns, recycling projects and a signature campaign to ask
the government to do something about the situation. A second measure would be encouraging your teacher to talk
about these problems and to discuss how young people can help to solve them. Finally, writing to local organizations
working on these issues for ideas on how you can contribute to solve them.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Marianne Moore (1887-1972) once said that her writing could be called poetry only because there
was no other name for it. Indeed her poems appear to be extremely compressed essays that happen to be
printed in jagged lines on the pages. Her subjects were varied: animals, laborers, artists, and the craft of
poetry. From her general reading came quotations that she found striking or insightful. She included these in
her poems, scrupulously enclosed in quotation marks, and sometimes identified in footnotes. Of this
practice, she wrote, “Why the many quotation marks?” I am asked …When a thing has been said so well
that it could not be said better, why paraphrase it? Hence my writing is, if not a cabinet of fossils, a kind of
collection of flies in amber.” Close observation and concentration on detail are the methods of her poetry.
30A- Marianne Moore grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri, near St. Louis. After graduation from Bryn Maws
College in 1909, she taught commercial subjects at the Indian School 30D-in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Later
she became a librarian in New York City. During the 1920’s she was editor of The Dial, an important
literary magazine of the period. She 30B-lived quietly all her life, mostly in Brooklyn, New York. She spent
a lot of time at the Bronx Zoo, fascinated by animals. Her admiration of the Brooklyn Dodgers – before
30D-the team moved to Los Angeles – was widely known. Her first book of poems was published in
London in 1921 by a group of friends associated with the Imagist movement. From that time on her poetry
has been read with interest by succeeding generations of poets and readers. In 1952 she was awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for her Collected Poems. She wrote that she did not write poetry “for money and fame”. To
earn a living is needful, but it can be done in routine ways. One writes because one has a burning desire to
objectify what it is indispensable to one’s happiness to express …”.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 1 to 8.
When people hear the word “city”, they usually imagine concrete, neon signs, and lots of air pollution.
Thanks to some clever and concerned architects, this image is starting to change. The concept of green cities
aims to bring some beauty from rural environments into urban areas. It is not only about looking better
though. Green cities are also trying to improve the efficiency of cities and raise the standard of living for
people who stay in them.
The term “green cities” refers to cities where builders take into account several environmental factors before
those cities are constructed or redesigned to be more physically appealing than traditional cities from the
past. In addition, the mobility of citizens should be considered, so public transportation can be more
convenient and travel time to work can be reduced. Energy sources should also be evaluated with the goal of
minimizing air pollution.
When it comes to going green, the city of Barcelona is far ahead of its time. Since 1859, its designers have
consciously tried to create sustainable urban designs. Then in 1992, the city received a well-deserved
makeover before hosting the Olympic Games. In recent years, Barcelona has upgraded its transportation
system. This has reduced air pollution and more workers are using public transportation instead of their own
vehicles. Barcelona also boasts one of the best recycling programs in the world. Visitors will find clear,
color-coded trash bins throughout the city where they can put all of their materials.

answer to each of the questions from 30 to 34.
Urbanisation occurs because people move from rural areas (countryside) to urban areas (towns and cities).
This usually occurs when a country is still developing.
Prior to 1950, the majority of urbanisation occurred in HICs (high-income countries). Rapid urbanisation
took place during the period of industrialisation that took place in Europe and North America in the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many people moved from rural to urban areas to get jobs in the
rapidly expanding industries in many large towns and cities. Since 1950 urbanisation has slowed in most
HICs, and now some of the biggest cities are losing population as people move away from the city to rural
environments. This is known as counter-urbanisation.
Since 1950 the most rapid growth in urbanisation has occurred in LICs (low-income countries) in South
America, Africa and Asia. Between 1950 and 1990 the urban population living in LICs doubled. In
developed countries, the increase was less than half.
The three main causes of urbanisation in LICs since 1950 are: Firstly, rural to urban migration is happening
on a massive scale due to population pressure and lack of resources in rural areas. These are ‘push’ factors.
Secondly, people living in rural areas are ‘pulled’ to the city. Often they believe that the standard of living in
urban areas will be much better than in rural areas. They are usually wrong. People also hope for well-paid
jobs, the greater opportunities to find casual or ‘informal’ work, better health care and education. Finally,
natural increase caused by a decrease in death rates while birth rates remain high.

Unlike life in the countryside which is often considered to be simple and traditional, life in the city is
modern and complicated. People, from different regions, move to the cities in the hope of having a better
life for them and their children. The inhabitants in city work as secretaries, businessmen, teachers,
government workers, factory workers and even street vendors or construction workers.
The high cost of living requires city dwellers, especially someone with low income, to work harder or to
take a part-time job. For many people, an ordinary day starts as usual by getting up in the early morning to
do exercise in public parks, preparing for a full day of working and studying, then travelling along crowed
boulevards or narrow streets filled with motor scooters and returning home after a busy day. They usually
live in large houses, or high-rise apartment blocks or even in a small rental room equipped with modem
facilities, like the Internet, telephone, television, and so on. Industrialization and modernization as well as
global integration have big impact on lifestyle in the cities. The most noticeable impact is the Western style
of clothes. The “ao dai” - Vietnamese traditional clothes are no longer regularly worn in Vietnamese
women’s daily life. Instead, jeans, T-shirts and fashionable clothes are widely preferred.

One of the most interesting authors of the twentieth century, J.R.R Tolkien, achieved fame through his
highly inventive trilogy, 'The Lord of the Rings'. Born in 1892, Tolkien received his education from
Oxford and then served in World War I. After the war, he became a professor of Anglo Saxon and English
language and literature at Oxford University. Although published in 1965, the three books that comprise
'The Lord of the Rings' were written in intervals from 1936 to 1949. This was mainly due to Tolkien's
responsibilities as a professor and the outbreak of World War II. By the late 1960s, this fascinating trilogy
had become a sociological phenomenon as young people intently studied the mythology and legends
created by Tolkien.
The trilogy is remarkable not only for its highly developed account of historical fiction but also its success
as a modern heroic epic. The main plot describes the struggle between good and evil kingdom as they try to
acquire a magic ring that has the power to rule the world. The novels, which are set in a time called Middle
Earth, describe a detailed fantasy world. Established before humans populated the Earth, Middle Earth was
inhabited by good and evil creatures such as hobbits, elves, monsters, wizards, and some humans. The
characters and the setting of Middle Earth were modeled after mythological stories from Greece and
Northern Europe.
Although readers have scrutinized the texts for inner meaning and have tried to connect the trilogy with
Tolkien's real life experiences in England during World War II, he denied the connection. He claims that
the story began in his years as an undergraduate student and grew out of his desire to create mythology and
legends about elves and their language. Tolkien was a masterful fantasy novelist who used his extensive
knowledge of folklore to create a body of work that is still read and enjoyed throughout the world today.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Urbanization degrades the environment, according to conventional wisdom. This view has led many
developing countries to limit rural - urban migration and curb urban expansion. But this view is incorrect.
There are a number of reasons urbanization can be good for the environment, if managed properly.
First, urbanization brings higher productivity because of its positive externalities and economies of
scale. Asian urban productivity is more than 5.5 times that of rural areas. The same output can be produced
using fewer resources with urban agglomeration than without. In this sense, urbanization reduces the
ecological footprint. The service sector requires urbanization because it needs a concentration of clients. As
services generally pollute less than manufacturing, this aspect of urbanization is also beneficial to the
environment.
Second, for any given population, the high urban density is benign for the environment. The urban
economics literature shows that compactness is a key determinant of energy use. High density can make
public transport more viable and reduce the length of trips. Urban living encourages walking and cycling
rather than driving. Third, environment-friendly infrastructure and public services such as piped water,
sanitation, and waste management are much easier and more economical to construct, maintain, and operate
in an urban setting. Urbanization allows more people to have access to environment-friendly facilities ‘and
services at affordable prices.
Fourth, urbanization drives innovation, including green technologies. In the long term, environment-
friendly equipment, machines, vehicles, and utilities will determine the future of the green economy. Green
innovations in Asia's cities will be supported by the region's vast market as the billions of people who will
be buying energy-efficient products will create opportunities and incentives for entrepreneurs to invest in
developing such products. Finally, the higher standard of living associated with urbanization provides
people with better food, education, housing, and health care. Urban growth generates revenues that fund
infrastructure projects, reducing congestion and improving public health. Urbanization fosters a pro-
environment stance among property owners and the middle class, which is crucial for the introduction and
enforcement of environmental laws and regulations.
Of course, urbanization also comes with costs. Millions of people are migrating to Asian cities and
companies are locating there to employ them. Urban sprawl and industrial activities, such as power
generation, transportation, construction, garbage and waste disposal, harm the environment. An assessment
of the impact of urbanization on the environment must balance its benign and adverse effects.
