Each FCC can do all of the functions. The DFCS consists of these components: - Mode control panel (MCP) Two flight control computers (FCCS) Actuator inputs to the flight control system. Autopilot The FCCs get inputs from several systems such as the inertial reference system (IRS) and flight management computer system (FMCS) and send commands to the aileron and elevator actuators. These actuators control the movement of the ailerons and elevators which control the attitude of the airplane. There are two autopilots, autopilot A and autopilot B. When you engage an autopilot, the autopilot controls the airplane attitude through these areas of flight: = Climb EFFECTIVITY FS004 737-300/400/500 MAINTENANCE TRAINING MANUAL cruise Descent Approach Go-around Flare. Eliaht Director For the flight director function, the FCCs get inputs from several systems and they send command displays to the electronic flight instrument system (EFIS) to provide guidance for the pilots. When the MCP flight director switches are on, the flight director display shows on the electronic attitude director indicator (EADID. The pilots use the flight director display to control the attitude of the airplane. The flight director display also shous at takeoff, but does not show at flare. Altitude Alert As the airplane approaches or flys away from the MCP selected altitude, an alert occurs. This alert warns the pilots as the airplane approaches or Leaves the MCP selected altitude. This warning occurs with or without the autopilots engaged or the flight directors on. Speed Trim When the engine thrust is high and the airspeed is low, the speed trim function maintains the speed set by the pilots with commands to the horizontal stabilizer. This function occurs during takeoff and only operates when 22-11-CC FLIGHTSAFETYBOEING PROPRIETARY) ALL rights reserved ~ See title page for details FlightSafetyBoeing DIGITAL FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM — INTRODUCTION the autopilots are not engaged. The flight directors may be on or off. Mach Tr As the speed increases, the airplane nose starts to go down. This is called Mach tuck. When the airspeed is more than Mach 0.615, the mach trim functions controls up elevator to keep the nose level. This function operates with or without the autopilot engaged or the flight director on. flee 7 When the airplane is on the ground, you can do BITE tests for the DFCS. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Flight Crew Inputs The mode control panel (MCP) is the primary interface between the flight crew and the flight control computers (FCCs). The crew uses the MCP to do these functions: - Engage the autopilots - Turn on the flight directors = Select the mode of operation - Select course and heading - Select target speeds and altitude. Other crew inputs to the FCCs are from these components: - Autopilot (A/P) disengage switches - Takeoff/Go-around (T0/GA) switches - Control wheel steering (CWS) force transducers - Autoflight status annunciators (ASAs). Fcc A and B The FCCs use data from the MCP, sensors, and these systems to calculate the autopilot and flight director commands : - Radio navigation systems - Inertial reference system (IRS) - Flight management computer system (FMCS) - Autothrottle (A/T) system - Control surface position sensors - Autopilot actuator position sensors. EFFECTIVITY FS004 737-300/400/500 MAINTENANCE TRAINING MANUAL The FCCs also use the data to calculate these commands and alert: Speed trim commands Mach trim commands Altitude alerts Autopilot disengage warnings. Autopilot Commands The autopilot can be in the command (CMD) or control wheel steering (CWS) mode. In the CMD mode, the FCC uses the sensor inputs to calculate the commands which go to the autopilot actuators. The actuators cause the inputs to the power control units (PCU) to move which controls the ailerons and elevator. In the CWS mode, force transducers under the control columns sense control wheel and control column forces from the pilots and sends these signals to the FCC. The FCC then sends the commands to autopilot actuators to control the ailerons and elevator. The FCC also sends commands to the stabilizer trim electric actuator to trim the stabilizer. The autopilot modes show on the top area of the electronic attitude director indicator (EADI). area is the FMA (flight mode annunciator). This The pilot can disengage the autopilot by a push of the disengage switches on the control wheel. If the autopilot disengages, an aural warning comes from the aural warning module and the red A/P Light on the autoflight status annunciator CASA) flashes. The ASA 22-11-CC FLIGHTSAFETYBOEING PROPRIETARY) ALL rights reserved ~ See title page for details FlightSafetyBoeing DFCS - GENERAL DESCRIPTION warning and aural alert can be reset if the pilot pushes the red A/P annunciator on the ASA or pushes the A/P disconnect switch. E ight Dir man. When the flight directors are on, the FCC gets signals from different sensors and shows the guidance commands on the EADI. There is no movement of the control surfaces and no alert if the flight directors are removed. When you set the flight director mode on the McP, the mode and its status also show on the EADI. Altitude Alert The altitude alert function uses the altitude that is set on the MCP. The FCCs tells the flight crew when the airplane approaches or departs this" set altitude. The autopilot or flight directors do not have to be on for this alert to operate. There is an aural indication from the remote electronic unit (REU) and a visual display on the altitude alert Light. ‘Speed Trim The FCCs send speed trim signals to the stabilizer trim primary electric actuator to control the horizontal stabilizer movements. This control increases the airplane stability at low air speeds. As the airplane speed slows, the stabilizer is moved to a more nose down position to increase the speed. As the speed increases, the stabilizer is moved to 2 more nose up EFFECTIVITY Fs004 737-300/400/500 MAINTENANCE TRAINING MANUAL position to decrease the speed. This function only operates if the autopilot is not engaged. Mach Trim The FCCs send mach trim signals to a mach trim actuator to control the elevator movements. As the mach trim actuator output shaft moves, it turns the feel and centering unit which moves the input to the elevator PCUs. This moves the elevator. The mach trim signal prevents a nose down at high air speeds. Much of the power goes through other switches and circuits before the Fees. ‘Irainina Information Point A valid FCC A could fail the power-up test if some of the circuit breakers are not closed in the correct sequence. If the AFCS SYS A FCC DC circuit breaker is closed before the MCP DC circuit breaker, FCC A may do an in-air power-up. FCC A may fail to power-up successfully under this condition. A valid FCC B could fail the power-up test if some of the circuit breakers are not closed in the correct sequence. If the AFCS B FCC DC circuit breaker is closed before the AFDS MCP CRS2 DC circuit breaker, FCC B may do an in-air power up. FCC B may fail to power-up successfully under this condition.
