Mole Concept Assignment #1

(Please upload your assignment on Moodle, if you decide to take pictures make sure your
responses are clear before uploading).

1. Define the term “mole”. (1)

Mole is the amount of substance that contains 6.02×1023 particles in the substance.

2. Define molar mass. (1)

Molar mass is the mass of 1 mole of a substance.

3. Determine the relative molecular mass of the following substances. (3)

a) Chlorine (Cl 2 ¿

Molecular mass formula= number of moles × weight of one mole

Molecular mass= 2×35=70g/mol

b) Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2)

Molecular mass formula= number of moles × weight of one mole

Molecular mass= 1(14)+2(16)=14+32=46g/mol

c) Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S)

Molecular mass formula= number of moles × weight of one mole

Molecular mass=2(1)+1(32)=2+32=34g/mol.

4. Determine the relative formula mass of the following substances.(3)

a) Aluminum oxide ( Al2 O3)

formula mass= number of moles × weight of one mole

formula mass= 2(26.98)+3(16)= 53.96+48=101.96g/mol.

b) Ammonium sulfate ¿
formula mass= number of moles × weight of one mole

formula mass= 2(14)+8(1)+1(32)+4(16)=28+8+32+64

=132g/mol.

c) Calcium hydrogen carbonate ¿

formula mass= number of moles × weight of one mole

formula mass= 1(40.08)+2(1)+2(12)+6(16)= 40.08+2+24+96

=162.08g/mol.

5. Determine the molar mass of the following substances. (2)

a) Magnesium nitrate ¿

Molar mass=number of moles × weight of one mole

Molar mass= 1(24)+2(14)+6(16)= 24+28+96=148g/mol.

b) Sucrose (C 12 H 22 O11 )

Molar mass=number of moles × weight of one mole

Molar mass=12(12)+22(1)+11(16)= 144+22+176

=342g/mol.

6. Determine the mass of 0.4 mol of zinc hydroxide(Zn ( OH )2) . (2)

STEP1: Find the Molar mass

Molar mass=1(65.38)+2(16)+2(1)= 65.38+32+2=99.38g/mol.

STEP2: Formula mass= moles ×molar mass

Mass=0.4mol×99.38g/mol=39.75g

7. How many moles are in 8.28 g of potassium carbonate ( K 2 CO3 ¿ ? (2)

STEP1: Find the Molar mass

Molar mass= 2(39)+3(16)=78+48=126g/mol

STEP2: Using Formula of moles= 8.28g/126g/mol

=0.66mol.

8. How many carbon dioxide molecules are in 11.0 g of carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ) ? (3)

STEP1: Find molar mass of carbon dioxide(co2)

Molar mass= 1(12)+2(16)=12+32=44g/mol

STEP2: Formula for finding number of molecules= mass given÷molar mass.

=11.0÷44×6.02×1023

=0.25×6.02×1023

=1.505×10×23molecules

9. Determine the percentage, by mass, of oxygen in aluminum carbonate¿. (3)

STEP1: Find molar mass of aluminum carbonate

=2(26.98)+3(12)+9(16)=53.96+36+144=233.96g/mol.

STEP2: Find molar mass of oxygen=9×16=144g/mol

=144g/mol÷233.96g/mol ×100%

=0.615×100=61.5%
