EDS-T-7927
DEGREASING PERFORMANCE TEST METHOD

1. PURPOSE
This standard specifies the test method to evaluate the degreasing performance by using the alkali-solution
degreaser for the oil-spread sample.

2. SCOPE
This standard is applied to evaluate the degreasing performance for all types of oils passing paint shop of the
GMDAT & KD exporting nations by applying it to the panel made by GMDAT or by outside order.
All material providers & parts providers which supply the oil satisfying the above conditions shall suggest the
evaluation result of conforming to the method of measuring the degreasing performance as requested by
GMDAT. (Example of the degreasing performance evaluation target oil: KD rust preventive oil, press-washing
oil, press fluids, etc)

3. TEST APPARATUS AND REAGENT

3.1. Reagent – degreaser (GMDAT: CHEMKLEEN #177, or degreaser used by affected progress), target oil,
Xylene, 0.1N H2SO4, PHENOLPHTHALEIN (indicator)

3.2. Test Apparatus – Panel (CRS steel or galvanized steel), stop watch, 4ℓcylindrical degreasing bath,
thermometer, degreasing solution heating coil, jig for fixing sample in degreasing solution, constant-rate mixer with
RPM meter & impeller, automatic burette & Erlenmyer flask (for measuring concentration of degreasing solution),
10㎖ volumetric pipette, filter paper, 500㎖ beaker, instrument for hanging for oil sample aging, and vinyl glove.

4. TEST PIECE CONDITIONS AND PREPARATION METHOD

4.1. Test piece preparation

4.1.1. Test piece size: 60×80×0.8㎜ (Size & thickness of test piece can be adjustable according to situations)

4.1.2. Kind of steel: CRS & galvanized steel (All kinds of steels that are in use or to be evaluated)

4.2. Oil sample preparation

4.2.1. Hole the both ends of the prepared sample with the constant intervals and clean every kind of pollutant
(oil or other substances) with xylene. The same is true for CRS & kinds of steels. At this time, hone the area near
the edge & hole of the sample with a file or sandpaper.

4.2.2. Fill the 500㎖ beaker with the oil to be evaluated, hang the sample in a loop (copper or SUS) to form the
an uniform oil film by depositing it in an oil barrel.

DEGREASING PERFORMANCE TEST METHOD

4.2.3. The oil-spread sample shall be hanged vertically at ambient temperature for 24 hours or more to age.
Typically, it takes 24 hours to form a film & volatilize a solvent of the rust preventive oil but the aging time &
storage condition can be different according to the test intentions.

5. DEGREASING SOLUTION PREPARATION

5.1. Adjust the test temperature after diluting the degreaser being used in current process in a 4 ℓ cylindrical
bath to make a wanted concentration.
Ex) CHEMKLEEN#177 Make-up condition
Used Solution: industrial water, degreasing solution concentration: 1.5 wt%, degreasing solution temperature:
50±2℃

5.2. Measure & record the free alkalinity of the degreasing solution after making up the solution

5.2.1. Degreasing solution free alkalinity measuring method

(1) Pour 10㎖of the prepared solution into the erlenmyer flask with the vounmetric pipette.
(2) Add four drops of an indicator (Phenophthalein)
(3) Start the titration using the test solution (0.1N H2SO4) & titrator (burette).
The ㎖ required until pink turns to colorlessness is the free alkalinity.

6. DEGREASING TEST & EVALUATION

6.1. Stir the degreasing bath using a stirrer at a regulated speed (RPM: 600±50). At the moment, the impeller
shall be located in the point that is 5±2㎝ away from the center of the degreasing bath and in the point that is 1/3 of
the total height of the bath from the floor

6.2. Locate the sample in the bath vertically to get a side of the sample towards the circulation direction of the
degreasing solution after fixing the sample in a jig while placing it 2±0.5 ㎝ away from the internal surface of the
cylindrical bath and dipping the upper part of the sample in the solution by 1.5±0.5 ㎝.

6.3. When dipped completely, start the stopwatch and degrease it for a certain period of time.

6.4. When the time is over, clean the sample with flowing industrial water for 30 seconds and place it vertically
for 10 seconds again. Examine it with naked eyes to measure the ratio (%) of the wetness area to the total area of
the sample by throwing a light on it. (Water break method)
* Note) Don’t touch the sample with fingers but use nippers

6.5. Evaluation Criteria

When evaluating the degreasing performance of oil by using a fresh degreaser, the requirement of the
degreasing performance shall follow the test specification of the each oil. The degreasing requirement of fresh

oil generally is over 95%.

Note) When the wetness mark is not form regularly or some oil ingredients like rust preventive oil remains on
it, even if the wetness area satisfies the norm of this company, the degreasing ability is regarded as a failure.
