3 pencils he buys and a discount of $2 for 5 pens he buys. How much in total does he pay?

RESULT: $80
SOLUTION:
The money he has to pay for the pencils is: $2 × 11 − 3 × $1 = $19
The money he has to pay for the pens is: 23 × $3 − 4 × $2 = $61
Thus, the total amount of money he has to pay is: $80

Q39. Katherine had 80 potatoes to peel. She started peeling at the rate of 12 potatoes in 2 minutes. 5 minutes later,
her sister joined and peeled at the rate of 4 potatoes per minute. How many more potatoes does Katherine peel than
her sister?
RESULT: 40
SOLUTION:
The rate at which Katherine peels the potatoes is: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒
The number of potatoes Katherine peels in the first 5 minutes is: 5 × 6 = 30
The remaining number of potatoes is: 80-30=50
The number of potatoes peeled in each minute is: 4+6=10
Thus, the time it takes both of them to peel the remaining potatoes is: 50:10= 5 minutes
So, the number of potatoes Katherine peels more than her sister in those 5 minutes is: (6 − 4) × 5 = 10
As a result, the total number of potatoes Katherine peels more than her sister is: 30+10=40

always puts all of his shoes in a large box. How many pairs of white shoes does he have if he has to take out 24
shoes to make sure that he has a pair of blue shoes?
RESULT: 5
SOLUTION:
The number of shoes he has to take out to make sure that he will have a pair of blue shoe is:

The area of the shaded region = The total area of the two second largest circle – The total area of the 4 smallest
circles
7 7 22
Thus, The area of the shaded region = 2 × (𝜋 × 7 × 7 − 2 × 𝜋 × 2 × 2) = 49 × 𝜋 = 49 × 7 = 154 cm2

Q39. A shopper buys a 100 dollar coat on sale for 20% off. An additional 5 dollars are taken off the sale price by
using a discount coupon. A sales tax of 8%is paid on the final selling price. Find the total amount the shopper pays
for the coat.
KEY: 81 dollars
SOLUTION
After the 20% sale, the coat costs 100 × 0.8 = 80 dollars.
Then dollars are taken off for a cost of 80-5=75.
Adding on the sales tax, the final amount is
75 × 1.08 = 81 𝑑𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑠
Q40. The radius of each smaller circle is 2 cm. Find the area of the shaded

area. Use   
 7

𝟑𝟓𝟐
KEY: cm2.
𝟕

SOLUTION
Because the radius of each smaller circle is 2 cm, then the radius of the larger circle is 6 cm

It is noticeable that the area of the shaded parts = The area of the larger circle – the total area of the 7 smaller
22 352
circles = 𝜋 × 6 × 6 − 5 × 𝜋 × 2 × 2 = 16 × = cm2.

SECTION B. Write the full answer to each of the following questions in the space provided in the answer
sheet.
Q39. The average age of 50 members of a summer camp is 19 years including 19 girls, 22 boys and 9 teachers.
The average age of the teachers is 35, the average age of the girls is 16. What is the average age of the boys?
RESULT: 15
SOLUTION:
The sum of age of the 50 members is: 50 × 19 = 950
The sum of age of the 9 teachers is: 35 × 9 = 315
The sum of age of the 19 girls is: 16 × 19 = 304
Thus, the sum of age of the 22 boys is: 950-315-304=331
Consequently, the average age of the 22 boys is: 331:22=15.045
