You are on page 1of 1

You are required to do the structural analysis of a three-storey building.

Primary beams and

columns will be constructed using structural steel. Assuming that flat roofs provide no access
apart from normal maintenance and the snow load is not critical. You are requested to choose
one frame in the short elevation view, i.e. frames with dimensions of L 1 x H where L1 is the
short side of the building footprint, and H is the building height, to analyse structural behaviour
using Robot Structural Analysis software.
L1 = 25
L2 = 44
H = 12

The specific requirements are as follows,

• Each story must have a clear floor-to-ceiling height of 4 m with 25m x 44m footprint.
Assume that the span upper limit is 9.5 m.
• Floor imposed loads are to be applied to the structure in accordance with Eurocode 1
EN 1991-1-1:2002, Computer room 2.0-3.0 kN/m2
• The floor dead load of 2.88 kN/m 2 is to be included where appropriate as an allowance
for lightweight partitions, raised floors, ceilings and services, where
• Wind pressure acting on the windward area is 1.88 kN/m 2, and on the leeward area is
0.88 kN/m2.
From Task 1 to Task 4: Assume the beam-column connections are rigid in the short elevation
frames.

1. Determine preliminary size of beams and columns in the structure based on suitable grid
arrangement.
2. Calculate the applied actions (permanent and variable) for the frame in accordance with
appropriate Eurocodes. Note: No mark will be given for next task without load
calculations.
3. Show one critical frame in short elevation view with loads and boundary conditions; name
it Frame A-A.
4. Plot bending moment and shear force diagrams as well as deformation shapes for each load
case and load combinations (Ultimate Limit States: Persistent and Transient Design
situations).
5. Consider Frame A-A,
a) identify the critical beam in terms of bending moment and determine the pertinent load
combination.
b) identify the critical column in terms of axial force and determine the pertinent
load combination.
