India – Quality of Life

Healthcare
Healthcare in India is different based on where you live. If you
lived in the country or rural area, you would have trouble finding
health care. Hospitals would be far away, and it would be hard to
find a doctor to take care of you. If you lived in the city or urban
area, you could find healthcare but might not be able to afford it. In
India, it costs money to see a doctor! Many people in India cannot
afford to get treatment from a doctor. People can get health
insurance, but it is rare! Very few employers offer health care
insurance. This affects quality of life because many people are
suffering and cannot afford to see a doctor.

Employment
India’s unemployment rate in 2019 was 6.1%, meaning
that approximately 6 people out of 100 do not have a
job. This affects quality of life because generally
people want to work so they can make money to be
able to afford the things they want and need!

Roles of Family
The family is very important in India and family members are
very close. The parents have a major influence on their children,
often making career and marriage choices for them! Can you
imagine your parents choosing who you will marry? The father is the
leader of the family and the mother takes care of the household. In
rural areas, the father does the heavy work, like plowing the fields,
clearing trees, and building homes. The women harvest and gather
food.

India – Culture and Identity

Traditions and Customs
One tradition that still exists but is illegal is the Caste System. The
Caste System originated in India and was mainly used by Hindu people. It
had 5 castes (classes) that you were born into:
Brahmin - priests
Kshatriya - warrior, ruler, politician
Vaishya - trader, merchant, farmer
Shudra - peasant, servant
Untouchables – no caste
If your dad was a peasant or a servant, you would also be a peasant or
servant. You would be treated like dirt and have no opportunities like
school. If your dad was lucky enough to be a priest, he was the most
respected man in the lands, and you would also be well respected and have
a great life. You were not allowed to marry someone who was not in your
caste. The untouchables were people that were ranked so low that they
did not deserve a caste. They had no rights and if they did have a job
outside of begging for money, it was the worst jobs possible.

Celebrations
Diwali is a festival that is celebrated by Hindus all over
India. When Lord Ram returned after being exiled for 14
years, the people in India celebrated by lighting up the city
with lamps on their windowsills. During Diwali, people
celebrate by exchanging gifts and sweets. They burst
crackers and worship the Goddess Lakshmi during Diwali.

Languages
In India, more than 19,500 languages or dialects are spoken. Hindi is
spoken by 551 million people. English is the second most spoken language in
India at 125 million speakers. Bengali is the third most spoken language
behind English with 91 million speakers.

India – Characteristics of Community

Government
India is the largest democracy in the world! Its government is very
similar to Canada’s. We both have 3 Branches that run our countries: (1) a
Legislative Branch to make laws, (2) an Executive Branch where the
Prime Minister works to make decisions for their country, and (3) a
Judiciary Branch that makes sure people follow the laws. Their
government is a democracy, meaning the people that work in the
government must be elected by the people in India.

Homes in India
People in India live in a variety of houses that range from huge
palaces for the rich and powerful to tiny huts with mud floors. Most
people that live in rural areas live in huts made from whatever materials
they had available to them. Usually they use materials like wood, leaves,
branches, animal hides, fabric, bricks or mud. The people in the city live in
typical houses or apartments we see in Canada.

Goods and Services – Imports vs Exports

In 2018, India exported (sent) over 45 million dollars worth of oil to
other countries. Their next largest exports are diamonds ($22 million),
medical equipment ($9.5 million), jewelry ($8 million), and rice ($6.5 million).
Their top import (what they bring into India) is oil ($82 million) followed by
gold ($36 million), diamonds ($19 million), coal ($19 million) and electrical parts
($11 million).

Transportations
In India, people use public transit, which are taxi’s,
buses, and railways. Traffic is very busy in India, as
the population is so large. Many people have switched
to two-wheelers because they are better on fuel and
they can fit between cars on busy roads!

Tunisia – Quality of Life

Healthcare
Tunisia has 180 hospitals to support their 11 million people. To put that
into perspective, Canada has 1,400 hospitals for its 37 million people. That
means Tunisia has 1 hospital for every 61,000 people, while Canada has 1
hospital for every 26,000 people. You could probably predict that their
hospitals are more crowded and give less care than in Canada. For
someone in Tunisia to visit a hospital, it costs 25-30 dinars (Tunisia
currency) and to visit a specialist, it costs between 35-40 dinars. Unlike in
Canada, if someone is sick, they may not be able to afford these fees,
and will not be able to get any treatment!

Employment
The unemployment rate in Tunisia is very high, at 15.4%. The
unemployment rate in Canada is only 5%, meaning it is triple in Tunisia. Many
people cannot find jobs, which means they have no income. This leads to
extreme poverty, where people are homeless and hungry!

Gender Roles
Tunisia has changed quite a bit over the last hundred years.
Marriages that used to be arranged by the parents are now worked out
between the bride and groom. Women now have more rights and are not
just in charge of looking after the household and the children. Now, they
can go to school and get educated. They are considered equal to men.

School
School in Tunisia is very important. It runs from
October to June and students are tested at the end
of each trimester. They need to pass with a 50% or
more to move on to the next grade!

Tunisia – Culture and Identity

Traditions and Customs
Most of the population in Tunisia are Muslim, which means they follow
strict religious traditions. First, no public displays of affection are allowed.
Do not kiss your wife in public! Second, you are not allowed to take
pictures near sensitive buildings like government or military buildings. Third,
drugs are illegal and if you are caught using or selling drugs, you can be
locked up for a very long time! Lastly, if driving in Tunisia, beware that
the rules are not as strict as they are in Canada. Drivers in Tunisia do not
stop for pedestrians and sometimes even stop lights. In the rural areas,
there are no roads, which makes driving even more difficult! Make sure
your car is off-road capable!

Celebrations
The people in Tunisia celebrate many festivals throughout the year.
Since they are Muslim, they participate in Ramadan, where men older than
12 and women older than 9 are expected to fast from sunrise to sunset
during the 9th month of the year. The biggest festival is Eid al-Fitr, which
is more commonly called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”. They
celebrate by inviting family and friends over to eat special food.

Languages
In Tunisia, there are 3 languages used: the local Tunisian
dialect, Arabic, and French. Arabic is the official language
of Tunisian and all important documents are written in
Arabic.

The Arts
The Tunisia people are known for their pottery work as they have
produced mosaic pots for thousands of years. Many of these pots are in
museums throughout Tunisia. Carpets are also made in artistic ways, with
bright colours used and creative patterns.

Tunisia – Characteristics of Community

Government
The government in Tunisia is a republic, which means they have a
President who is elected to run the government. The government is
democratic because the people who work in the government are
elected by the people. Some government workers are appointed
(selected) by elected officials. This gives the citizens of Tunisia a voice
because they can choose who they want to make decisions on their
behalf.

Housing
The houses in Tunisia are different in the urban and rural areas. In
the cities, houses are built very closely to each other with no
decorations on the outside. The houses were painted white and often
had orange rooftops. Pillars were used at the front of the houses for
supports and to add an architectural element.
In rural areas, shelters were built underground! They dug deep into
the ground to sink their houses and protect them from the harsh, dry
environment. Each shelter had a central courtyard with sleeping rooms,
and workrooms built around it.

Goods and Services

Tunisia has the 72nd largest economy in the
world. In 2017, their top exports were insulated wire
($2 billion), men suits (868 million), women suits ($543
million), oil ($490 million), and vehicle parts ($457
million). Their top 5 imports were: oil ($1.53 billion), gas
($882 million), cars ($681 million), protection
equipment ($488 million), and insulated wire ($482
million).

Ukraine – Quality of Life

Healthcare
In Ukraine, the health care system is not working.
Many of the citizens cannot afford to get the treatment
they need. Another problem is there are not enough
doctors! The average doctor makes only $100 a month,
which is nowhere near what they make here in Canada.
This means many Ukrainians become doctors and then move
to Canada, the USA, or European countries that pay fairly.
The quality of life is suffering in Ukraine because of the
poor health care system!

Employment
The unemployment rate in Ukraine is 9.2%, which is rather high
compared to Canada and the USA. The unemployment rate does not
factor in people who do not want jobs. This means that 9 people out of
100 that want a job cannot find one! This is a problem because a good
economy needs people working and earning money. It also leads to a
poorer quality of life as many cannot afford the luxuries that we enjoy
here in Canada.

Family and Gender Roles

In Ukraine, the family is very important. It is common for many
generations to live under one roof. This means that grandparents will live in
the same house as their children and their grandchildren. The grandparents
often take on a role in parenting the children.
A recent study concluded that there is still inequality between men
and women in Ukraine. 80% of the men in Ukraine believe they are the
head of the household. 40% of the women in Ukraine agreed with that.
The women raise the children and perform the housekeeping, while the
men go out and get a job to support the family.

Ukraine – Culture and Identity

Traditions and Customs
The wedding customs are very interesting in Ukraine. In the past, it
was customary that the groom buyout a bride from her parents. This
means they had to pay the parents just to marry their daughter! After
the buyout, the bride and groom were blessed by the parents and would
go to the church for the wedding. Weddings are big parties that could
last up to a week!

Celebrations
Many of the festivals and celebrations in Ukraine revolve around
music. Most holidays are between May and June, when it’s not too hot or
too cold. The Lviv City Day is a massive celebration with jazz, pop, and
rock music along with folk dancing and theatre on the street. Families go
to the streets to enjoy a parade and carnival type of atmosphere. The
festival usually takes place on the second weekend in May.

Languages
The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, but Russian is also
spoken in certain areas. In the large cities, like Kiev, Russian is the primary
language. This upsets many traditional Ukrainians that live in the rural areas
because they want to see their language continue on. Russian can be
spoken in multiple countries, but Ukrainian is only spoken in Ukraine and if
the people begin speaking Russian more, Ukraine language could be lost.

The Arts
The Ukrainians are known for their decorative
side. Many enjoy making dolls, wood-work, and ceramics
(pottery). They also enjoy telling stories and singing
songs. Many of their songs are legends or folktales
that are clearly untrue but told like a true story!

Ukraine – Characteristics of Community

Government
Ukraine has a republic style of government that is similar to the USA
and Canada. They are similar to the USA because they have a president
who is the head of the government and the head of the state. They are
also like Canada because they have three Branches of government:
Legislative (law making), Executive (decision making), and Judiciary (law
enforcing). They are a democratic government as the members of the
government are elected into office by the citizens.

Housing
Houses in Ukraine are different depending on where they are located.
In the cities, some areas have older style apartment buildings with
balconies and brightly coloured walls. Other areas have stone and brick tall
houses that are attached to each other. The rural area homes are small
one-story shelters with brightly coloured walls.

Goods and Services

Ukraine’s top 5 imports are oil ($13 billion),
computers ($6.5 billion), vehicles ($4.2 billion), Plastics
($2.7 billion), and medicine ($1.9 billion). Their top exports
are iron/steel ($9.9 billion), cereals ($7.2 billion), animal
oils/fats ($4.5 billion), minerals ($3 billion), and electrical
equipment ($2.9 billion).

Transportations
When getting around Ukraine, you have many options. Each city has
several bus lines and trolleybuses that allow you to travel across town. It is
cheap to ride the bus because they want people to use them instead of
driving themselves and adding to the traffic and carbon emissions. Taxis
and mini-buses are also used. Trains are used to get from city to city.

Peru – Quality of Life

Healthcare
Peru’s healthcare is setup so that all Peruvians have access to
free healthcare services regardless of how much money they make.
The problem is that the hospitals are crowded and there are not
enough doctors. It is common for patients to wait 40 days just to
see a doctor and 60 days to wait for a surgery. Quite often,
patients did not receive the treatment or medicine that they needed
because they couldn’t be seen in time.

Employment
The unemployment rate in Peru is 4.5%, which is very good!
Canada’s unemployment rate is 5.7% and the USA’s is 3.7%. The main
industries that Peruvians work in are fishing, mining, agriculture,
livestock, and tourism.

Family and Gender Roles

Family is very important in Peru as people put their family first
and their own personal interest second. In urban cities, the typical
family has 2 or 3 children, while in rural areas, the average family
has 3-4 children. In Peru, men are expected to be “macho”, and
women are supposed to provide care.

School
Peru offers quality schooling to its people.
Children are expected to start school at 6 and stay
until they are 16. School is free for all Peruvians.
Private schools exist and offer schooling in Spanish
and English as well as other religions.

Traditions and Customs
The people of Peru have different customs and traditions that we
may not be used to. First, Peruvians are close talkers! They tend to stand
closer to the people they are talking to. Secondly, they show more
respect to their elders and they are considered to be wiser from all their
experiences. Lastly, Peruvians dress more formally than Canadians. It is
rare to see a Peruvian in shorts and flip flops!

Celebrations
In Peru, there are many festivals and celebrations that happen
throughout the year. Each festival brings bright colours and vibrant
dances with religious connections. On June 24th, it is Inti Raymi, which is the
Festival of the Sun. Peruvians celebrate the Inca Sun God - Inti by singing,
dancing, and eating a massive feast.

Languages
The official language of Peru is Spanish, but many languages are
spoken there. In the 1500’s, the Inca civilization owned the land in Peru and
spoke their own indigenous language. That all changed when the Spanish
arrived and conquered their land. The Spanish brought settlers from Spain
to Peru which has impacted what language they now speak. Some native
people from Peru continue to speak their indigenous languages.

The Arts
Peruvian artisans use cotton and llama wool to
weave fibers into colourful designs that reflect their
culture. They make carpets, blankets, wall hangings,
and curtains with bright coloured patterns.

Peru – Characteristics of Community

Government
Peru uses a republic style of government. This means they have a
president who controls the government. They also have 3 branches of
government that run the country. The government is democratic as well,
since the members in the government are elected in by the citizens who
vote. Members who wish to be elected into government join a political
party that they share common ideas with. If their political party is voted
in, they win. The leader of the political party that gets the most votes
becomes the President of Peru.

Homes in Peru
The houses in Peru differ depending on whether
they are in the city or in the country. In the city,
houses and apartments are built out of wood, steel,
stone, and concrete. They are more expensive than
the houses in the country. In rural areas in the rain-
forests and the mountains, homes have been built out
of wood and reeds for hundreds of years. A reed is
long grass from a wetland. Sometimes in the city, the
people living in poverty without much money build their
house out of any materials they can find. They often
use scrap wood and scrap metal to build their house.

Goods and Services

Peru is known for their mining. Their top 3 exports are from the
mining industry. (1) minerals - $17 billion, (2) gems - $7.3 billion, (3) mineral
fuels - $4.2 billion, (4) fruits, nuts - $3 billion, and (5) copper - $2.3 billion.
For imports, their top 5 imports are: (1) oil - $6.9 billion, (2) machinery –
$5.3 billion, (3) electronic equipment – $4.2 billion, (4) Vehicles - $3.7 billion,
and (5) Plastics - $2.2 billion.
