Information technology (IT) is a broad phrase that encompasses the domains of computer systems, software,

referred to as an IT project. A communications system, information system, or, more precisely, a computer
system (including all peripherals, software, and hardware) run by a small number of IT users is referred to as an

Although people have been storing, retrieving, altering, and transferring information since the creation of the
first writing systems, Harold J. Leavitt's 1958 essay in the Harvard Business Review is credited with coining the
phrase "information technology" in its modern sense.
