Technical report on Ennerdale Police Station EXT 9 with regards to the design of block 7 cell

block.

The shear design of cell block 7 focused on calculating the appropriate areas of steel
required for the concrete beam to effectively resist shear forces. Y bars and stirrups were
also needed to be calculated; these were required to provide sufficient reinforcement. All
designs and calculations were carried out in accordance with Eurocode 2: Design of concrete
structures (En 1992).

From the AUTOCAD plan layouts, initial dimensions were identified to be:

Length: 31816mm

Width:230mm

Depth:510mm

Th ultimate crushing strength of the beam was calculated to be 0.3mpa, this was determined
by considering the width and depth of the beam. Certain factors such as cylinder strength
was also calculated, which was 24mpa.

The ultimate design shear force along the face of the beam was calculated to be 400.464Kn.
This force was determined by considering a section of the beam and determining the
relative angles based off on if the beam was simply or continuously supported. It was
identified to be simply supported; the longest section of the beam was calculated which is
where the shear force would occur long was determined to be 2222.48m.

The required number of shear links was calculated to be 80 stirrups. While the additional
longitudinal tensile force caused by shear was 20.275Kn. Furthermore, the shear resistance
was determined to be ()

Ultimately the beam would have a spacing of 625mm with a bar diameter of 503mm. This
was determined using the reinforcement areas table in section 10 of Eurocode 2.
