Describe a neighbour you are interested in

You should say:
Who this person is
How you know this person
What this person likes to do
And explain why you think this neighbor is interesting.

(Who this person is) A person who immediately pops into my head/ crosses my mind is
Mr.Phil, who lived in room 19 just right next to my family. In terms of his appearance, he is a
tall man with curly hair and deep blue eyes. He is an ex-pilot that just moved in with his wife a
couple of months ago. Although he is not usually around, my encounters with him were indeed
very interesting.

(How do you know this person? ) My neighborhood is very welcoming to new residents.
Naturally, when he first moved in, I was introduced to him and his wife through our landlord.
Although it was quite awkward at the beginning since I am an introvert, I then found out we
have so much in common from favorite TV shows to our obsession with brunch. Just a few
days later, they invited me to their house warming party.

(What this person likes to do) Because he is already retired, he has a lot of time on his hands. I
would usually see the old couple travel very frequently. They will buy souvenirs for their
neighbor and talk about their journey for hours. It was fascinating to see how they are still very
excited to go to new places or try new food.

(And explain why you think this neighbor is interesting) Mr. Phil is a very interesting man
as he is a great story-teller. His story from when he was still working as a pilot is always full of
wonders. Although they are not in Vietnam at the moment, I still miss the time when I can
interact with such great people.

Vocabulary:

- Storyteller: người kể chuyện

1
He was the one who first set down the stories of the Celtic storytellers.
- Brunch: bữa sáng muộn
he cobbled together a brunch of cold remains from the fridge
- Housewarming party: tiệc tân gia

- In terms of: khi nói về
In terms of his personality, he is a kind person

Part 3
1. Do you think people are familiar with their neighbors?
I think it depends on the regions people live in. In the countryside, people usually know their
neighbor as they would usually help each other on the farm. However, in the city, people are
very cautious of strangers as anyone could be an easy target for burglars or robbers.

2. How do children build relationships with others in a community?

In Vietnam, as neighbors are quite close to each other, children enjoy playing with their peers
in the same neighborhood. That is why in order to encourage children to build a relationship,
parents need to be open-minded and trust people within the neighborhood

3. Is it beneficial to get along well with neighbors?

There are many benefits when we are on good terms with our neighbor. Firstly, it is easier to
have someone look after the children when an emergency occurs. For example, when people
have to work overtime, they can ask their neighbor to pick their children up at school without
the fear of them being kidnapped

4. How can big business help local neighborhood?

Businesses have a wide range of options when it comes to helping their local community.
Firms could allocate a percentage of profits or a certain amount each month to their chosen
community group or charity to provide financial support, which is less time-consuming.
5. What negative impact does technology have on our community?

2
As technology develops, people tend to be more negative when it comes to interacting with
other people. For example, as there is more and more news on home invasions, people are
becoming more cautious when talking to each other. Sometimes, they think it would be best to
avoid any interaction which can make them grow distant.
- Burglars: kẻ đột nhập
It was brave of you to chase after the burglar.
- Robber: kẻ trộm
The robbers shot a policeman before making their getaway.
- Home invasion: đột nhập vào nhà bất hợp pháp
- An easy target: mục tiêu dễ dàng
Tourists are easy targets for criminals.
33. Describe an important river/lake in your country
You should say:
What is this place?
Where is this place?
Why you like this place
And explain what you would like to do there

I’m going to talk about a very beautiful lake, which is referred to as a symbol of the capital city
of Vietnam. It’s relatively famous not only to the Vietnamese, but also to foreigners.
(What and where is this place?)
I’m talking about Hoan Kiem lake, a very large lake located in the center of Hanoi, which is
known for its historic beauty. There is even a legend related to the name that went down in
history. It was said that the King turtle living at the bottom of the lake lent the contemporary
leader a very precious sword, which helped him to end up winning a major battle. The King
turtle then turned up again after the victory and asked for his sword back. The lake was then
named “Hoan Kiem”, which stands for “returning the sword.”
(Why you like this place)
As a child, I really liked the story so I always wished to visit it someday. Yet due to the great
distance, I had no chance to see it with the naked eye until I turned 18 and went to a university
nearby. My first visit to Hoan Kiem lake remains an unforgettable memory. Its elegant beauty is
out of this world, with a turtle tower in the middle of the lake and a shrimp-shaped red bridge
leading to an old temple. To be frank, I’m strongly attracted by historical monuments and
relics of the past– they always make me feel a pang of nostalgia upon seeing them, because
they provide a link to our roots. That’s why I really love this lake.
(Explain what you would like to do there)

3
One of the various things I’d like to do there is to wander around with my friends, let out the
negative feelings in my mind, and I’d take some tasty types of street food. Another thing I
strongly wish to do but which is out of the question is to climb up the tower on the lake and
observe the aquatic life. Maybe I could even watch the turtle of the legend sleeping like a baby!
As far as I know, the authority won’t allow that, so I really hope that in the future, it’ll be
approved so that my wish can be fulfilled.

(Tham khảo bài: Describe a place where you can read and write|)
You should say
· Where the place is
· How you know this place
· What you do there
· And explain why you think it is a good place for reading and writing

Answer
(where the place is)
I’m going to describe a coffee shop called Tranquil, where I often spend my time
engrossed in reading and writing. It’s actually quite a long way from my house, but
that doesn’t put me off visiting there again and again.
(how you know this place)
This coffee shop came highly recommended by one of my friends, a writer. She loves
cosy places which possess real character, in which she can spend hours writing film
scripts, and this is one of her favourite haunts. She took me there about three months
ago, and I fell in love with it at first sight. It is a romantic old spot with wooden tables,
vintage book desks, and beautiful windows, all works of traditional craftsmanship..
Each floor has separate areas, and I felt like I was lost in a wonderland, with many seats
specially situated to offer beautiful views through various windows.
(what you do there)
As a freelancer, I visit Tranquil frequently to read over my documents and do my online
jobs. Sometimes, I even come across some fascinating reading matter on their desks,
because there are a large number of books and documents donated to this coffee shop by
loyal customers and book lovers. So, I broaden my literary horizons in some
unexpected directions. I have also joined a literary appreciation circle there, which
meets every month to discuss books which we have all read.
(and explain why you think it is a good place for reading and writing)
I have to admit that, though I’m hard to please, I’m always satisfied when I go there,
secure in the knowledge of a pleasurable visit . Not only is its design uniquely
relaxing, but Tranquil’s service is second to none. You always get good, consistently
delicious food at Tranquil, whether you have lunch or just morning coffee or afternoon
tea. The atmosphere is warm and homely with gentle music and quiet people, which

5
suits bookworms like me down to the ground.

35. Describe something that surprised you and made you happy. You
should say:
When it was
Who/ what surprised you
Where you were then
And explain why this surprise made you happy.
(When it was) Today, I’m going to talk about my stay in JW Marriott Phu Quoc, one of the
most famous holiday resorts here in Vietnam. Although the stay cost a fortune, I found it good
value as their service just blew me away. I went there with my boyfriend in 2020, just before
the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
(Who/what surprised you) Upon arrival at the airport, a representative met and greeted us. The
check-in process was hassle-free and took less than 5 minutes. Then, one of the employees
escorted us to our room in their electric car, commonly known as buggy. I was literally awed by
the decorations of graduation pictures after opening the door.
(Where you were then) I entered the room and saw many photos of me in the graduation gown
I’d taken at school. Also, there were some balloons and a small tiramisu cake with my name
and graduation wishes on it. After the employee had left the room, my boyfriend admitted
sending the photos to the hotel for this decoration. But he said everything was free of charge.
(And explain why this surprise made you happy) I was overwhelmed with joy as my
vacation was so well-prepared. I didn’t know my boyfriend was such a conscientious person as
he had been pretty much care free. Also, kudos to the hotel for treating my graduation vacation
so well!
Vocabulary
1. To cost a fortune (idiom): rất mắc
The cars on this list won't cost a fortune to insure.
2. Good value (phrase): đáng đồng tiền I
thought the offer was good value.
3. Escort (v): hộ tống
Security guards escorted the intruders from the building.
4. To blow someone away (phrase): làm ai đó bất ngờ. Winning
first prize and a full scholarship blew her away.

6
5. To be overwhelmed with/by sth (v): choáng ngợp
They were overwhelmed with/by grief when their baby died.

Part3:
1. How do people express happiness in your culture?
Naturally, people, regardless of their culture, are likely to smile and thank those making them
happy. I don’t think the way people express happiness varies from culture to culture.
2. Do you think happiness has any effect on people? How?
Happiness has a significant effect on people’s mental and even physical health. Satisfaction
produces dopamine, which is a substance that makes people feel positive and motivated. In
terms of physical health, when being happy, people are likely to lead a healthy lifestyle instead
of being down in the dumps and abusing unhealthy substances, such as drugs or alcohol.
3. How can people be happy?
Doing something you enjoy is beneficial to your emotional well-being. Simple things such as
watching sports with a buddy, taking a bath, or meeting up with friends for coffee can all help
to brighten your day. Doing something you're good at, such as cooking or dancing, is a terrific
way to have fun while also feeling accomplished. Avoid doing activities that seem fun at the
time but make you feel bad later, such as drinking too much alcohol or eating junk food.
4. Is it good for people to be unhappy? Why?
Sometimes we are joyful (for example, when we are having fun), and other times we are sad
(such as when we lose a loved one). Whatever the sentiments are, they are part of life. A
negative mood may even be beneficial. Our society prioritizes happiness and regards misery as
a waste of time. However, sorrow may slow you down and cause you to reflect about your life,
your feelings, and the people around you. It might help you keep your relationships and dreams
in focus.
Vocabulary
1. To be down in the dumps (phrase): rất buồn
She's down in the dumps because she failed one of her exams.

36. Describe a competition (e.g. music, cooking, sport) you would like to take part in
You should say:
- What the competition is
- Where you can take part in it
- Who won it before
- And what you think about it

7
(What the competition is)

I’d like to share my dream with you, which is to win Britain’s Got Talent. It’s been my ambition
since I was a little boy. Britain’s Got Talent is the original version of this kind of show all over
the world, and was started by one of the judges of the show named Simon Cowell. The first
programme was broadcast on TV in 2007 and it’s gone viral in other countries across the
globe in recent years. I stumbled upon a group called “Attraction” who performed shadow
puppet theatre in 2013 and have fallen in love with the group and the show ever since.

(Where you can take part in it)

On hearing the name of the show, everyone will know where it takes place. Britain’s Got Talent
is held annually in the U.K including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However,
there is no limit based on your nationality, which means that people
from any country are eligible to participate in the show, not only the British. The audition
round takes place in some big cities in the UK like London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
Personally, I would like to go along to the auditions in London, ‘cause it’s probably the most
exciting venue.

(Who won it before)

I have already mentioned a group called ‘Attraction’. Not many people expected foreigners to
come first in a show which consisted of more than 90% of native British people. Although
Attraction were outstanding, they were not expected to actually win. However, these Hungarian
nationals blew the British away with their final performance in which they staged a great act
about the British Monarchy and British culture. As a result, they became champions in that year.

(And what you think about it)

I really love the programme as it is one of the most prestigious and entertaining shows in the
world. Also, the show is able to attract lots of people from different backgrounds and
nationalities to take part. I really admire Simon Cowell due to his great efforts to make the show
worth watching every single year.

1
Part 3: Competition at school

Why do you think some school teachers use competitions as class activities?

(Give a direct answer) I consider that competitions should be used in class because they will
increase children’s academic performance to some extent. (Example) For example, in my
class, the teacher usually holds academic competitions and also accelerates competitiveness by
putting students into different groups, and the group which has the best results in a month will
receive rewards from the teacher. This has increased our performance significantly. If I study on
my own and there is no competitiveness among us, I will not be encouraged to try my best.

Is it a good thing to give prizes to children who do well at school? Why?

(Give a direct answer) Absolutely yes, I believe that it is beneficial to reward children who are
academically strong. (Explain) On the one hand, this makes sense because they should have
prizes for making great efforts to perform well. On the other hand, this will motivate these
individuals as well as others to make more efforts to achieve further rewards afterwards,
which will contribute to their increased academic performance in general. (Example) In my
province, those in high school getting 7.0 or over in IELTS will be given a scholarship of up to
around 400 dollars. As a result, the English proficiency of students in my province is higher
than that of those in other provinces.

Would you say that schools for young children have become more or less competitive since
you were that age? Why?

(Direct answer) To the best of my experience, I really think that competitiveness among young
students is higher than ever. (Explain) School pressure to make the grade has become an
alarming crisis here in Vietnam and the rate of suicides has never stopped increasing in the past
few years. (Example) Kids now have to study all day long at school and extra classes, and
streaming in schools adds to the pressure even on young pupils.
When I was young, all that came to my mind when studying was making friends, playing
games, not outcompeting my friends or seeing my friends as studying rivals. Therefore,
education now is definitely more competitive.

Vocabulary:

Example: Nobody can succeed in their studies if they rely on luck rather than hard work
to make the grade.

37. Describe an invention which changed the world in a good way

You should say:
What it is
What benefits it has brought
How it influences people of different ages And
explain how it changed people’s lives
(What it is) Before the Internet, no innovation accomplished more to expand and democratise
information than Johannes Gutenberg's printing press, developed in 1440 in Mainz, Germany.
However, he was far from the first to automate the book-printing process. Woodblock printing
dates back to the 9th century in China, while Korean bookmakers used movable metal type a
century before Gutenberg. Yet, most historians feel Gutenberg's adaption was crucial in
ushering in the modern era.

1
(What benefits it has brought) The printing press not only made books available to the lower
classes, but it also contributed to the Age of Enlightenment and promoted the dissemination of
new and often divisive ideas. Martin Luther, a religious reformer, used the power of the printing
press to spread his ideas and opinions, leading to one of the largest reformations in history.
(How it influences people of different ages) Later on, as printing technology
developed, more advanced printing machines have been developed. An enormous
number of books have been printed, which has played a crucial role in scientific
revolutions.

(And explain how it changed people’s lives) The impact of the printing press on people’s lives
is enormous. Without it, school children wouldn’t have a wide variety of books to read,
meaning that knowledge couldn’t reach the general public and many other inventions would not
have been invented. So, I would say that the printing press is one of the most important
inventions in history.

Vocabulary
1. To usher in sth (n): dẫn vào
These changes could usher in a period of dramatic economic growth.
2. Dissemination (n): sự phổ biến kiến thức/thông tin
Anything that stands in the way of the dissemination of knowledge is a real problem.
3. Later on (phrase): về sau này
Later on, we could go and have a meal if you like.

Part 3:
1. What is the most helpful innovation at home?
Well, from my own personal experience, the most helpful innovation at home is light. Many
people take this for granted until there is a blackout and everything is in the dark. We've
become accustomed to seeing these bright lights almost everywhere we go, making our streets
safer, our nights easier, and allowing us to do everything we do during the day after the sun has
set.

2. What household appliances make us lazy?

Washing machines have greatly simplified our lives, cutting down a great deal of time spent on
washing garments, including clothes, bedsheets. However, they’re also making us lazier.
Nowadays, it’s easy for students living far away from home to leave their clothes dirty for a
whole week before taking them to a launderette instead of washing clothes manually. The

1
same can be true for dishes. Lots of teenagers nowadays do not clean up after themselves as
they just put dirty dishes in the sink and wait for their parents to wash for them.

3. What kind of invention can be used at school?

The Internet of Things should be implemented at school. Indeed, it has been a boon for
education. With the growth of mobile technology and the Internet of Things, schools can
improve campus safety, keep track of vital resources, and increase access to information in the
learning environment. Teachers can also employ this technology to develop "smart lesson
plans," as opposed to the standard rigid plans of the past.

4. Do you think AI will replace human teachers? Why?

Definitely no. Although AI has gone a long way since its infancy, there are some drawbacks
that prevent AI from replacing human teachers. For example, it may be unable to explain
uncommon answers from students. Also, there are many problems at school that need to be
solved, such as accidents or violence that cannot be solved by AI. So, human teachers will
continue to play a crucial role in education.

39. Describe an occasion when you lost something important

You should say:
what is it
why it is important
how did you lose it
how did you do after lost it

Answer:

(what is it)
The most important and valuable thing I have ever lost is probably my motorcycle.
(why it is important)
This item was particularly important to me because it was my main means of transportation,
and my university is quite far away from my home. It was also especially meaningful to me
because it was the result of so much hard work and savings from my parents.
(how did you lose it)
This may sound crazy, but I was a victim of a burglary. Apparently, a thief broke into
our parking room and took my motorcycle away.
(how did you do after lost it)

After I lost my motorbike, I freaked out because I had to be extremely punctual for
school. This meant that I had to wake up very early in the morning and take a bus during off-
peak travel hours before traffic ground to a halt. Going to school by bus, I really broke with
precedent as I had never done this before. Although I was saddened by the loss of my
motorbike, this experience was not all bad; as a matter of fact, I even grew fond of taking the
bus. While I normally struggled with the weather, the pollution, and the irritation of traffic
congestion, on the bus I could appreciate a work of literature and read until I arrived at
school. Plus, the government was raising the price of petrol, so I saved greatly! I guess every
cloud has a silver lining, and you just have to make the most of it!

40. Describe a traditional product madee in your country which you like
You should say:
What the product is
When did you try this product for the first time
What it is made of
And explain how you feel about it
(What the product is) The first thing that springs to my mind when I go to Hanoi, the capital
of Vietnam, is cốm. This is a seasonal dish associated with autumn and is a popular seasonal
dessert across Vietnam, especially in Red River Delta cuisine. I first heard of this traditional
product in a Vietnamese poem when I was in grade 8. It is described as pearls from God
because of its tastiness and beauty.
(When did you try this product for the first time) I got to try cốm for the first time on my
trip to Hanoi in 2016, just one year after I had heard the poem. The poet exactly described cốm,
from its flavour to its texture and taste. The taste is slightly sweet with a nutty flavour. It can be
eaten plain or with coconut shavings. At first, I was afraid that cốm would fall short of my
expectations as poems often exaggerated the tastiness of food. But I was really overwhelmed by
this traditional food.
(What it is made of) Cốm, commonly known as green rice, is basically a flattened
rice dish in Vietnamese cuisine. It is not dyed green, as can be done with pandan, but is

1
immature rice kernels roasted over very low heat then pounded in a pestle and mortar until
flattened. It is wrapped in lotus leaves instead of plastic, which gives it an even better flavour.

1
(And explain how you feel about it) I think this type of food is underestimated by foreign
tourists and even Vietnamese people. My friends always say that the food tastes too plain. I
think it is because they’re used to eating food with strong flavours and spices. Cốm is pretty
natural, which makes it quite special in today’s world. So, I believe that it should be valued
more by both Vietnamese and foreign tourists.
Part 3
1. Why do traditional products attract tourists?
Strange things attract humans by nature. In particular, whenever going to another country,
tourists often expect to discover the culture of that country, through their food, lifestyle, music,
and traditional products. Moreover, it’s easy for them to bring traditional products home as
souvenirs which help keep the good memories of their trip. Those factors make traditional
products appeal to tourists.
2. What different types of traditional products are produced in your country?
Tourists in Vietnam treasure tribal textiles because the ability to witness and purchase such
fine, hand-stitched handiwork is a rare treat for those travelling from the West.
Vietnam boasts a diverse range of ethnic groups that continue to live in the same way they
have for hundreds of years. Other than that, traditional lanterns, which are flat, packable, and
ready to go, will give a touch of sensuous Vietnamese elegance to any garden or bedroom
and are available in a rainbow of magnificent colors and materials.
3. Why do people like to buy imported products?
Again, humans are easily attracted by things which are new to them. Other than that, I
believe that some people think imported goods are of higher quality than domestically
produced ones. This is because in order for products to be accepted into a foreign market,
they need to go through many rounds of inspection. This may be true in some but not all
cases, however.

1. appeal to (v): cuốn hút
I think what appeals to me about his painting is his use of colour.
2. Boast (v): sở hữu
Ireland boasts beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and friendly locals.

41. Describe something you do that can help you to concentrate in work or study
You should say:
- What it is
- How it helps you
- What you think about it

(What it is)
Today I’m going to tell you about a great aid of mine in improving my concentration on study:
that is instrumental music. By instrumental music I mean music with a bare melody and without
any lyrics, played using acoustic instruments.

(How it helps you)

I had experienced the problem of short attention span for a long time until my brother gave me a
tip: listening to music while studying. At first I doubted his suggestion, but so hopeless was I
that I followed his advice anyway. I created a playlist of instrumental music, which was neither
too loud nor too boring, under the name “Various Artists” on Spotify. Eventually, the solution
turned out to be far more effective than I ever expected. It was and has been a workable solution
up to now.
To begin with, putting on headphones and listening to just one single source of sound reduces
almost all other disturbing noises around. Now that I can’t hear anything else other than the
music, my concentration is no longer disturbed by the traffic noise, people mingling and giggling,
or other mixed noises coming from elsewhere. The other way this approach works is that
instrumental music helps you establish a very peaceful state of mind, which is perfect for paying
attention and making you ready for receiving knowledge. As it does not contain lyrics, it
generally does not ask listeners to engage and understand the words, thereby not distracting them.
When I listen to that playlist, the melody simply releases my mind from stress and various
irrelevant thoughts, just to focus on one thing: the assignment I’m working on.
After just a month of trying out this technique, my attention span has been considerably
extended, and I have become more productive and gained significantly better study results.

(What you think about it)

Although it didn’t seem to be a good idea at first, the musical idea has been working so well on
my studies that I would recommend it to anybody having the same problem.

Part 3:
Is it important to keep concentrating on something?
- (Give a direct answer to the question) Yes, the ability to keep yourself focused is of
absolute importance. (Explain your reason or reasons) A high level of concentration
is followed by high productivity and efficiency, which means not only can it bring
about better results, it can help save a great deal of time and effort as well. (Give an
example) For example, when I really pay attention to doing my homework, it will only
take me about 30 minutes to submit a quality answer. (Explain the opposite or
negative) In contrast, if I keep getting distracted; then procrastinate finishing it, it can
take days and finally get me nowhere.
What can be done if there is too much noise around?
- (Give a direct answer to the question+ Explain) I suggest two solutions when you
are distracted by a lot of noise around. One way is that you can simply find another
place to work, a much quieter place and stay away from those sources of disturbing
sounds. The other way is to try to reduce the effect or intensity of the noise. (Give an
example) For instance, if your concentration is affected by the traffic noise, you
should close all doors and windows, or install soundproof equipment.
When is it the easiest to be concentrated on something?
- (Give a direct answer to the question) It depends on who we are when it is that we find
optimal for concentration. (Explanation) Because according to the differences in each
person’s body functioning, people may differ in living habits. (Give an example) In
everyday life I have seen some people who wake up early in the morning because they
consider this time the best part of the day to work; but also when it comes to a great
many others, they find themselves most productive and focused only in the late evening.

42. Describe a time when you use your mobile phone for something
You should say:
When you use it
So, I’ll get started by talking about how I use my phone to do my schoolwork. It sounds very
counterintuitive, especially when the impression that mobile phones are distracting to
students’ learning is so well-imprinted on people’s mind. Of course, I don’t personally agree
with this opinion, but I do see the potential harms that they might give out when there is no
self-control when using them. Anyways, I actually depend

2
heavily on my phone for my study, considering that it is embedded with loads of
functions that I need at the tip of my finger.
How you use it - What you use it for
For instance, in my online English class, I use the dictionary application I have downloaded to
my phone before searching words whose meanings I have yet had a proper grasp on. Other
times, I would utilize the built-in audio function of the dictionary to listen to hit the right nail in
my pronunciation. More importantly, I would use my phone to take note of whatever words or
phrases that I encountered so I could learn them when I have some spare time.
And explain how you felt when you use your mobile phone for something
I feel that I am more motivated to learn English when I use my phone. This is because I realise that
I have limitless access to a lot of resources available online that are always accessible to me
anytime, anywhere.

1. Counterintuitive
Ngược ngạo, phản trực quan

2. Imprinted

marks were imprinted in the snow
3. Embedded
ấn vào, đóng vào, gắn vào
He had an operation to remove a nail embedded in his chest
4. Grasp
Nắm được, hiểu thấu (vấn đề...).
We're still trying to get a grasp on the situation.

Part 3:
1. What do people generally do with their mobile phones?
I think that people can do a lot of things just with their mobile phones, considering how
common and technologically advanced smartphones these days are. From what I see, people,
especially young people, generally treat their phones as a camera to take a picture wherever
they go. I also see some businesspersons use their phones to keep track of inventories, do
calculations, and the sort. Watching videos or surfing on the internet is something quite
common to do with mobile phones, even I do it quite often.

2
2. Is it good to call late in public?
Unless it is an emergency, I do not think that having a call late in public is at all appropriate.
Yes, some locations will have barely any person around, so a public call would not disturb
anyone. But that doesn’t mean that there is no one in nearby buildings and with the night being
so quiet, having a call late in public may easily get on
someone’s nerves. In fact, it doesn’t matter if it is made in public or in private, a late call is
always a no-no to me.
3. Is calling the most important function of a mobile phone?
I think that calling used to be the most important function of mobile phones but with the
emergence of smartphones, storing information has become more important, if not the most
important function. Unlike phones of earlier generations, the storage capacity of current devices
is considerably larger, and processing speed has improved many fold. In addition, smartphones
nowadays have larger, touchable screens which are easier to navigate and see. This makes
functions that demand a lot of storage space or require a lot of visuals, such as taking a photo,
sending email, or surfing the net, can all now be integrated as applications on the phone.
Consequently, instead of multiple devices, these applications transform the phone into a single
information source.

1. keep track
theo dõi, theo sát để cập nhật thông tin
It's her job to keep track of how the money is spent.
2. get on someone’s nerves
điều gì đó hay ai đó làm bạn thấy phiền toái, khó chịu, bực mình That
car alarm is getting on my nerves.

43. Describe a time when you were very busy

You should say:
When it happened
Where you were
What you did
And how you felt after that
(When it happened) I had to organize a college tournament in Paris last summer. As a result,
I busy was for an entire week. I was kept occupied from dawn to dusk. In reality, organizing
a cultural festival is a difficult task. I had to do nearly everything by myself, and I was alone.
Despite the fact that some of my classmates assisted me, I was responsible for everything.

2
(Where you were) Initially, I was tasked with developing a strategy and assembling a team to
fulfill the duties. Unfortunately, I was unable to find suitable applicants to assist me in the
process. As a result, I had to do everything on my own. The program's planning began the night
before, and I barely slept that night.
(What you did) Organizing the entire event was not as simple as it seemed. I had to arrange for
the prizes and take the appropriate measures to get them ordered and delivered in time for the
award ceremony. In addition, I was in charge of preparing the venue on the college campus.
Eventually, everything was completed, but there was some elements of disorganization.
(And how you felt after that) The emotions were mixed. At one point, I considered giving up
since no one helped me with the planning and preparation. But I didn't give up and completed
the task. As a result, it was a success. The most significant thing is that I was subsequently
honored for the event. And I must say that it was a fantastic week for me.
Vocabulary
1. From dawn to dusk (idiom): từ sáng tới khuya
When the power was out, we had to do as much as we could from dawn to dusk.
2. On my own (phrase): một mình
I don’t mind going to the movies on my own.

Part 3:
1. Do you like to be always busy?
No, I don’t want to be always up to my ears in work or assignments. However, I always try to
occupy myself with something when I have free time. Otherwise, I would feel that I’ve wasted
that time. For example, I would do household chores or hit the gym whenever I don’t have any
assignments to get done.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages when people keep busy?
Being occupied definitely offers some clear advantages. First, people will not think that
they’re useless when they are free while others are working. Second, they will gain recognition
from their bosses for their hard work. However, being always busy is not without
disadvantages. Sometimes, I think that people are busy because they are unable to manage
their time well, leading to the fact that they cannot get their work done on time and become
extremely busy. This can negatively affect their health and productivity.

3. What kind of pressure may people experience at work?

2
Peer pressure, of course! People may easily get jealous of their peers’ achievements, which may
lead to toxic competition in the workplace. No one wants to be left behind by their colleagues
having the same position as them. Other types of pressure include office politics, in which
employees can be mentally drained because of unnecessary drama in the workplace.
Vocabulary
1. up to someone’s ears (idiom): rất bận rộn
I'm up to my ears in work.
Tôi rất bận rộn với công việc của mình
2. drain (verb): làm ai đó mệt mỏi/kiệt sức The
long journey completely drained me.
44. Describe a popular/well-known person you interested
You should say:
Who this person is
How you know about this person What
this person is famous for
Explain why you are interested in this person

(Who this person is)

I’m going to tell you about a celebrity who I really respect. He is Fernando Torres, a
Spanish professional footballer who plays as a striker for Atletico Madrid club and the
national team.

(How you know about this person)

Torres has been my idol for a long time since I was a kid. I’ve always been a sports fan and
I first watched him play when I turned 8 years old, the summer of the EUFA European
Football Championship in 2008. I watched the final match of the championship, in which
Torres contributed a truly impressive performance. He was also the only one who scored
and made Spain a winner for the second time in history. The moment of his beautiful goal
has turned me into a wholehearted admirer for 10 years now.

(What this person is famous for)

Fernando Torres has earned an international reputation as a valuable striker with great
vision and technical ability. He has the awareness to get in behind opposing defenders and
the ability to finish accurately with his head or with either foot. Like the true professional

2
that he is, he keeps himself in the peak of condition. Thanks to gifted talent and dedicated
training, he - together with his team-mates - has won lots of titles and set international
records.

(Explain why you are interested in this person)

Personally, I find Torres an interesting person mainly because of his attitude as a team player.
In football, strikers are generally notorious for selfishness and greed for goals, but Torres is
different. Not only does he do his best to score himself, he also tries to support and create
chances for his team-mates. This has been an inspiration for me to be unselfish, generous
and cooperative in my own life and attitude towards others.

45. Describe a friend you enjoy talking with

You should say:

Who you spoke to
Where you were
What the conversation was about
And explain why you think it was interesting

(Who you spoke to) Some weeks ago, I bumped into Daniel, who was one of my best friends
back in high school, when I was chilling in a speakeasy bar. Daniel is currently a student at a
prestigious conservatory in Italy, while I’m also studying classical music on my own. Thanks to
his profound knowledge gained in Italy, Daniel shared with me lots of insights into classical
music that I’d never known before.
(Where you were) After clearing all the work, I headed out for my favourite bar downtown
to listen to some jazz music. I was just having some small talk with one of the bartenders
when I spotted someone familiar. Then I realised that person was Daniel. He quickly waved
at me as I invited him over.
(What the conversation was about) We chatted and caught up on our studies. It just so
happened that Daniel was studying at my dream school in Italy. So we talked a lot about the

3
school, the curriculum and experience at that school. After that, Daniel voiced his concern
over the decline of classical music in modern life. It just so happened that I shared the same
concern as him. And then, we mainly discussed reasons for this trend and measures to address
it.
(And explain why you think it was interesting) Classical music has laid the foundations for
modern music as all the theories of modern music and techniques are developed from classical
music. So, it is important that it needs to survive and thrive, even in today’s society. After the
conversation with Daniel, I learnt so much from him and gleaned some essential ways to
maintain the role of classical music in modern times. I cannot wait to meet him again, probably
at his school in Italy, to discuss this issue even more.

Vocabulary
1. Bump into someone (phrasal verb): vô tình gặp ai đó
Example: We bumped into Kayla in a shop.
2. Insights (n): hiểu biết sâu sắc
Example: It was
an interesting book, full of fascinating insights into human relationships.

Example: It’s been ages since we last met. Let's have a coffee next week and catch up.
4. Voice concern over something (phrase): lên tiếng về vấn đề gì
Example: Many people have voiced concern over the proposed changes in the law

Part 3:
1. Is it better to communicate face to face or online? Why?
It is always better to communicate face to face. The first reason is that information transmission
is much easier and more convenient. It is said that effective communication mainly comes from
non-verbal factors, such as body language, tone and pitch of voice. Only in real life can people
express these things. By contrast, people cannot see each other’s faces, body language or hear
each other’s voices through messages, which may lead to misunderstanding.
2. Do you think it is impossible to make real friends on the internet?
It is possible to find soulmates on the internet. I got to know my best friend on Facebook and we
get on pretty well. However, it wasn’t until I met him in person and spent a few years being his
friend that our friendship really developed. Social media are becoming more and more advanced
as people can now talk to each other as they do in real life through the screen. However, I think

3
that they are just a place for people to meet and get to know one another. In order for friendships
to thrive, real-life communication is an essential factor.
3. Why is it hard to maintain friendships for some people?
Our obligations and hectic lives get more challenging as we get older. As a result, we tend to
avoid meeting, messaging, or calling someone in the polite case that we are disrupting their busy
life. We frequently forgive friends when we haven't heard from them in months or when they
haven't responded to our most recent text message. This is not something we would tolerate in
other relationships, such as those with our spouses or children. Because of this, it is quite hard to
maintain friendships for some people.

46. Describe a difficult decision you made that had a very good result
You should say:
What decision it was
What difficulties you faced how you made the decision And
explain why it was a difficult decision.

(What the decision was) I have been fortunate enough to not have to make lots of difficult
decisions in my life so far. But there was one which I’d consider a dilemma and I was reluctant
to decide on. It was my decision regarding what to study in university:
whether to pursue my childhood dream of fine art or to stick with English which is my
strength.
(When you made your decision) As high school students, we all had to decide what we wanted
for our life at some point during those years. Some people were at a loss, luckily I was not one
of them as I already knew what I wanted and what my strength was.
However, they weren’t the same and thus my problem started there.
(How long it took to make the decision) I didn’t really think about it in my first year of high
school, but the problem became clearer and clearer afterwards. And it was not until my final
semester in high school was I able to make up my mind to go for English. So, I’d say I spent
two years thinking about it.
(Why it was difficult) It was indeed a tough one. I was torn between my dream and the reality
before my eyes: fine art was what I had always wanted to do, but there wasn’t much place for it
in the market as far as I know, and the competition was intense; while English was not quite
what I dreamed of, but it was more realistic and easier to get a job. I ended up studying English
to make a living and chose to let art stay at my side as my ultimate hobby. I have no regrets
regarding my choice, at least until now.

3
1. Dilemma (n): tình trạng khó xử, lưỡng lự
The president is clearly in a dilemma about how to tackle the crisis.
Tổng thống rõ ràng đang ở trong tình thế tiến thoái lưỡng nan về cách giải quyết cuộc khủng
hoảng.
2. Be at a loss (phrase): không biết nên nói gì / làm gì I’m
at a loss to explain what happened.
Tôi không hiểu chuyện gì đã xảy ra.
3. Make up one’s mind (phrase): quyết định (= decide) I
haven't made up my mind where to go yet.
Tôi vẫn chưa quyết định sẽ đi đâu.
4. Be torn between (phrase): giằng xé giữa 2 bên, khó để quyết định 1 trong 2 lựa chọn She’s
torn between her loyalty and her desire to tell the truth.
Cô ấy bị giằng xé giữa lòng trung thành và mong muốn nói ra sự thật.
5. Make a living (phrase): kiếm sống
You can make a good living in sales if you have the right attitude. Bạn có
thể kiếm nhiều tiền bằng việc bán hàng nếu bạn có thái độ tốt. Part 3
1. What decisions do people usually make in their daily lives?
Our lives are basically us going around making decisions: what to eat, what to wear, where to
pursue higher education, where to work, whether to go to this place on holiday or not, etc.
Everything from big to small are decisions, and a great number of things we meet in our daily
lives are the result of the decisions of one or another human being.
2. Which is easier, making a decision by yourself or making a decision after group
discussion?
Social interactions greatly affect the eventual outcome of a decision. This can make deciding
something even more difficult regardless of the person’s stance on the matter, as the decision
then would involve some kind of peer pressure - personal feelings of the participants of the
said discussion. On the other hand, making a decision by yourself can be challenging when you
don’t have enough knowledge about such topics of discussion. So I’d say neither of them is
easier or more difficult, we’ll just have to use them both wisely.
3. Why are many young people unwilling to follow their parents’ advice?
Being young and inexperienced, combined with the generation gap in both knowledge and
lifestyles, most younger people would think that they know better than their parents. If their
parents approached them with an imposing tone, they would tend to take the advice as the

3
parents saying “You cannot do this, but I can”, therefore triggering a rebellious response from
them.
4. Why would middle-aged people tend to second-guess their own decisions?
As far as I know, middle-aged people have been through a lot more than younger people. They
have seen the world developing for a longer time, and their life experiences hence are way more
complicated. It is natural that they tend to consider everything more carefully, as they have
more memories to reflect upon.

47. Describe a time when someone asked you for your opinion
You should say:
When she/he asked you
So, I’ll start by talking about the time a friend of mine asked for my opinion. In fact, it was
quite recently that we had a conversation, the details of which I still have in my mind. I am
certain that she reached out to me for some advice in late April, before the big national
holiday. The conversation was definitely out of the blue because when we met up that day for
some work-date, I had only anticipated questions about how she could do well on her
assignments and the sort. So, the conversation was something along the lines on how to
improve the functioning of the club that she was acting as the president of and that I am also a
member of too. So, as she brought up the issue, I was all ears to her and after she was all
done, I started to offer my perspective on the issue.
How she/he felt while listening to your opinion
As I commented, she was attentive to what I was saying. She did pose some interesting

3
questions as I gave out my opinion. I did some reading of her facial expressions, and I was
certain that she breathed a sigh of relief as I constantly reassured her that everything would
quickly fall into its place, after kickstarting some transition processes.
And explain why she/he needed your opinion
For sure, she sought my opinion because she was very wound up with the prospect of the
club, as she intended to assume another hat in another club and there was no one ready at hand
who could take up the position. But I think it was largely because I was kind of more of her
senior and had more insight on how clubs in other schools actually worked. My guess would
be that my opinions would serve somehow as a reference that she could use as she tried to
figure out what to do and how to keep the spirit and the activity of the club around in the
upcoming semester after she left.

Part 3
1. Have you ever asked someone for his/her opinion?
I have asked a lot of people for their opinions. In fact, it is something that I constantly do when
I’m unclear about a matter that I’m facing. For sure, as a student myself, I always let people,
especially those who I don’t share the same major with, to read through my essays and have
their say on my writing. By knowing where they stand on my essay, I can easily identify
whether I have made my points clear. This is definitely something that is difficult to point out if
there is no outside voice on the matter, when personal biases cloud my thinking. Therefore, if
there are issues, I can immediately correct them.

2. Why do some people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story?

I think there are a lot of reasons why people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story.
Maybe, the listener doesn’t know how to react so their facial expressions after hearing the story
as they may not exactly align with what they feel like inside, so the storyteller may consider
this somewhat offensive. Other times, because some people like to tell their stories to seek not
only advice but also understanding, the lack of sympathy or empathy from the listener is
definitely considered impolite, if not rude to the storyteller. But I don’t think the listener is the
only one to blame here. If the story is really screwed up then of course, people will react
outrageously.

1. have their say

48. Describe a place you have visited that you would recommend as a good place to live
(Where it is): During my trip to Singapore last year, I had an opportunity to visit the
Singapore Botanic Gardens, which impressed me with tons of different colors. The gardens
are located quite far away from tourist traps, but very accessible by bus. (What it is like):
Being the biggest botanic garden in Singapore, covering more than
74.000 square meters, it showcases Singapore’s biggest collection of flowers comprising
hundreds of species with a wide variety of colors, such as red, yellow, orange, pink, or even
blue, and their shades. The national flower of Singapore, which is the orchid, can be found
easily in this garden. Moreover, the park’s entrance is also naturally decorated with colorful
flowers.
(What it is used for): Besides bringing a green environment to the city, which is always
humid around the year, the Botanic garden is also an ideal spot for not only foreign visitors
but also Singapore citizens to immerse themselves in natural beauty and get away from it
all after hard-working days. You can easily see hordes of tourists going sightseeing or
leisure activities being taken place at this place, especially on the weekends.
And explain why you remember it well

3
Well, I think the primary reason why the memories about this place are still vivid in my
mind is because it was the first time I have ever witnessed such a wide variety of colorful
flowers in my life, although I have travelled to different countries. The moment I entered the
garden, I was completely blown away by its beauty. To be honest, it was a once in a life
time experience. I hope that I will have opportunities to visit this garden again.
Part 3 questions:
 Is color important for clothing?
 Yes, I do think that colors play a vital role in clothes since it shows how the clothes make
us look and appear to other people. Sometimes the colors of your outfits even express your
feelings. For example, when I’m not in a good mood, I will choose a black outfit. It will be
dull if a person wears the same colors on a daily basis.
 Should course books be colorful?
 Absolutely. I believe that course books should be lively in order to help the transmission
of knowledge to readers be more effective. Using illustrations helps to aid in learning and
may be more effective than just describing something. For example, kids are usually in favor
of books with colorful pictures rather than those with only words. If course books include
colorful contents, they will be more likely to be sold faster than other ones.

49. Describe an occasion when somebody said something positive about some work that
you did
You should say:
Who it was
What work it was
When she/he told you that
And explain how you felt when hearing it

(Who it was) In 2019, I joined an outreach programme in which I had the chance to deliver
lessons for the first time as a teacher. I was chosen as one of the Vietnamese volunteers in
charge of interpreting as well as helping Singaporean students with their lessons prior to class.
The programme lasted from 25th November to 5th December 2010. During the project, I was
complimented by the facilitator on my ability to engage students into the lessons.

4
(What work it was) As we had to teach two classes comprised of two different age groups, we
struggled a lot in planning lessons since there was a big gap between the level of English
proficiency of the students in each class. We received some negative feedback from the
students on our lesson plan as some wanted to play games while some others were interested in
studying. I came up with an idea of sticking pieces of paper around the walls as children were
required to find match a word with a photo depicting that word.

(When she/he told you that) The morning after that, the children were pretty interested in the
game and the facilitator seemed to be pretty pleased with the result. So, she complimented me
on my idea in the daily briefing which took place that evening.

(And explain how you felt when hearing it) That was the first time I’d worked with
foreigners. I always felt that they were superior to me. However, after this, I could be
pleased that I’m not behind my international peers. That compliment really motivated me to
try better, instead of being complacent about my skills and knowledge.

Part 3
1. Will you be affected when hearing a number of negative stories?
As a fresh graduate without too much experience in the world of work, I tend to be affected
by negative stories. Office politics and gossip tend to exert a strong impact on my behaviours.
There was a time when my bosses treated my colleagues unfairly.
Although this issue was not really related to me, hearing my colleagues gossip behind my
bosses’ back also made me develop unfriendly attitudes towards her. Later on, the

4
relationship between me and my boss also deteriorated.
2. How will you react when someone pays you a compliment?
First, I’ll show my appreciation for their compliment by thanking them. Then, I tend to ask
them what I’ve done that they find good so as to develop myself even more. Most of the time, I
will also ask them whether they have any constructive criticisms so that I can avoid such
mistakes. I do feel proud, of course! But I’m not an attention seeker who posts compliments on
themself on social media so that others also know they’ve received compliments.
3. Why is negative feedback as important as positive feedback at work?
While positive feedback lets people know what they’re good at so as to continue to do that, a
negative one allows people to know their mistakes so as to avoid repeating these in the future. I
know that most people don’t like to hear negative reviews, but they play a crucial role in self-
development. Without them, we’d continue to make mistakes, which leads to many bad
consequences for ourselves and work.

University of Singapore - one of the most prestigious universities in the world. He is one of the
most creative and competent leaders I’ve ever encountered in my life. And his willingness to
make contributions to society never fails to impress me.

(How you knew him/her) I met Dennis during an outreach programme in Vietnam. He was in
the same group as me, meaning that we worked together a lot. We were mainly in charge of
teaching activities.

4
(What type of work he/she does) Well, Dennis is the founder of the Youth Exploration
Association of NUS. His responsibilities revolve around developing overseas outreach
programmes for students in Singapore. Sometimes, he travels with other students to other
countries, mainly those in Southeast Asia like Vietnam and Cambodia, as a project leader. These
projects mainly aim at improving the access to education of disadvantaged children in rural
communes in low-income countries.

(And explain why you think his/her work is useful to the society) I think that his work is
useful to society for two main reasons. First, as mentioned above, the projects he is in charge of
give education opportunities to impoverished kids through activities like
teaching English and other subjects, as well as other extra-curricular activities that allow these
kids to know more about the world. Second, the NUS students that participate in the projects are
also beneficiaries. They can gain a great deal of experience, as well as broaden their horizons,

extremely difficult. Besides, jobs in the fields of finance are also high-paying.
Stockbrokers, bankers, accountants, auditors, tax consultants all enjoy a remunerative income.
2. How have working conditions changed?
Well, working conditions have changed significantly in the past few years. Employees nowadays
receive a better benefits package compared to the past. Also, thanks to the emergence of

technology, the amount of paperwork has reduced significantly while labour productivity has kept
improving at a rapid pace. An increasing number of companies have placed a focus on their
employees’ mental health through activities like teambuilding and private consultation with the
CEO, which is beneficial to both productivity and employees’ well-being at the same time.
3. What are the impacts of the pandemic on the work environment?
The first impact is the financial crisis. Lots of companies are teetering on the verge of going
bankrupt because they have literally no income while operational costs remain unchanged or have
even increased. Because of this crisis, employee benefits, the most important of which is salary,

chances to have a more flexible schedule.

51. Describe a person you follow regularly on social media or other media

You should say:

Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
What he/she posts on social media
And explain why you follow him/her on social media

(Who he/she is) Today, I’m gonna talk about a Palestinian influencer I follow regularly on
Facebook. He’s called Nas Daily. I guess lots of people know this guy as the short videos he
recorded while travelling around the world went viral some years ago. Nas Daily is a
Singapore-based influencer who is believed to be a Harvard dropout, like Meta CEO Mark
Zuckerberg and Windows CEO Bill Gates.

(How you knew him/her) One day, when I was surfing Facebook, I came across a short video
in which Nas Daily kept praising how Singapore, his new home country, had emerged as one
of the most developed countries in the world. Albeit short, his video contained a sufficient
amount of basic knowledge about the country’s development and introduced some popular
attractions in the Southeast Asia city-state. This video immediately impressed me. After that, I
decided to watch some other videos he made.

(What he/she posts on social media) So basically, Nas Daily produces a wide variety of
videos. But he mostly focuses on his journeys and the culture of the places he goes to. He
sometimes produces motivational videos as well.

(And explain why you follow him/her on social media) I follow Nas Daily because his videos
are so informative. They help me broaden my horizons about other countries around the world
in an expedient way. Although his videos may contain some slips, they are generally
informative and unbiased at all.

1. What can people do on social media?
In the past, most people used social media to keep in touch with their friends and families,
through their statuses, photos and direct messages. Now, the functions of social media are far
beyond those as people can also play interactive games, earn money, report disasters and so on.
People expect that the metaverse, which is a blockchain-based project and is currently in its
infancy, will even take social media to the next level.
2. Do you think older people and younger people will use the same kind of social
media software?
Yes, although that’s not why young people like it. Back then when Facebook was still new,
most users fell into younger age groups. Now, as older people always have access to the
internet, they also learn to use social media, especially Facebook, which is currently the largest
social networking. Lots of young people are switching to Instagram and other sites that have
fewer old users.
3. Do older people spend much time on social media?
The amount of time spent on social media varies from person to person. However, compared
with young people, older people definitely spend less time on social media. That being that, I
know many old people who take photos everywhere and post them on social media nearly
every single day. From my personal observations, for old people, social media act as a tool to
keep pace with information, so they won’t need to spend too much time on them like young
people, who tend to use social media as a tool to show off their lifestyles and achievements.

4. Are non-social media like television and newspapers still useful?

They are still useful at the moment, I guess. But it is only a matter of time till they become a
thing of the past. Many newspapers have rolled out their online editions along with their hard
copies. Subscription to online news is also more economical compared to buying print
newspapers. Meanwhile, many TV channels are now going online. Soon, everything will be
digitalised, and television and newspapers will totally disappear.
