Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Meditating on the Word

Beyond the political structure from any particular country, Gods real interest and concern is the assurance and respect for peoples well being and dignity. God wants a balance between whats human and whats divine. For example, in our first reading we heard about Cyrus, a pagan king became a providential instrument of the liberation of the chosen people (the Israelites). Even though Cyrus might have had his own political interests, God brought forth something good from that particular situation. He made it clear: "I am the Lord, and there is no other". Once Israel returned to their homeland, they recovered their national identity and at the same time their religious identity, because the new generations had forgotten about their alliance with Yahweh and about the Messianic hope. Today, it is still difficult to balance harmoniously between what we must render to Caesar and what we must render to God. In other words being good citizens and at the same time being good Christians. At times, the identification of the two entities has been wrongly exaggerated either the political power is over sanctified or the Church's mission is over politicized. In a majority of nations, there has been a healthy separation between church and state. However, we still need to keep in mind Jesus slogan: render to Caesarrender to God. Whenever civil laws go against Gods will, Jesus has no doubt in knowing what God wants. Jesus has no doubt in knowing what to choose and He expects his followers to do the same. Peter and the other apostles, in spite of persecution, beatings and imprisonment, they were brave in following what God wants: "First we must obey God and then men." Back then the apostles were prohibited to talk about Jesus. Today some of the areas where we may have a considerable divergence are regarding sexual morality, marriages identity, respect for life, and the school's educational mission... One thing is to have laws which do not penalize some permissive aspects of human life and another is having Christians that will simply accept them without any say. Thus, we must not neglect the human dimension and social well-being of ourselves and our family, but neither the religious one and our openness to God and our membership in the Church.

Respect Life
AIDS AND ADULT STEM CELLS As reported in the New England Journal a man was treated for leukemia with an adult stem cell transplant, which is becoming a standard treatment But the doctors, knowing the man had AIDS, used specific adult stem cells from a donor selected because the donor's cells lacked a key protein that the AIDS virus must bind to infect a cell. Not only did the patient recover from his leukemia, but the AIDS virus seemed to disappear from his system.

God, there is so much injustice and suffering crying out for our attention: victims of hunger, of racism, and of political persecution. May my life no longer be mine alone; may I use my freedom to pursue the freedom of others. Amen.Adapted from Elie Wiesel--Sojourners Online, Sept. 20, 2011 Join our Social Justice Ministry to free those in need by giving them a hand up on their road to self-sufficiency and hope!
