CELLPHONE SIGNAL STRENGTH INSTRUCTIONS

ASSEMBLY

Remove the instrument from the bubble wrap packaging

1. The contents should include:

One white cardboard box with a 12V battery inside

One white pole (aerial) with a silver screw fitting on one end
One length of galvanised metal pipe with:
- A bracket on one end attached to the pole with stainless hose clamps
- Next to the bracket should be a black mushroom shaped GPS Antennae.
- A grey plastic box taped to the metal pole with wires coming out of it

2. To assemble the instrument take the white pole (aerial) and remove the nut and washer
from the silver screw fitting.
3. Insert the screw fitting into the slot on the top of the bracket, then place the star washer on
the end and screw the nut until the aerial is firmly secured to the top of the bracket.
4. Find a black cable with a coaxial connector on the end (refer photograph below)

5. Gently screw the black cable in to the base of the aerial until it is secure. The complete
assembly should resemble that shown below.

NOTE THE WHITE AERIAL CAN BE DAMAGED BY SHARP KNOCK OR HITS SO TAKE CARE TO PROTECT
IT DURING TRANSPORT.
OPERATION

Part 1 Setup

1. Remove the battery from the white cardboard box and remove the green plastic terminal
protectors from the battery.
2. Next follow the grey wires coming out of the plastic box. The end of the grey wire terminates
in two wires (red and black) each containing a spade connector which will need to be
connected to the battery to power the instrument.
3. The grey wire should be long enough to reach the battery, however if a longer lead is
required, snip the cable ties securing the grey white to give yourself additional cable.
4. Select a suitable site with an open view of the sky so GPS satellites can be located. The metal
pole can be gently pushed into soft ground or lent against a fence (not electric)
5. When ready to operate the instrument connect the two wires at the end of the grey cable to
the battery. NOTE: PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE RED WIRE IS CONNECTED TO THE RED
BATTERY TERMINAL AND THE BLACK WIRE IS CONNECTED TO THE BLACK BATTERY
TERMINAL OTHERWISE THE INSTRUMENT WILL BE DAMAGED.
6. It is recommended that you first set up the instrument near your office or an area with good
cellphone reception.
7. When the instrument is first powered on wait for 5 minutes then call Mark (021783114) or
Paul (0220760846) they can confirm that everything is working correctly before venturing
into the field.

Part 2 Field Operation

1. Select a suitable site with an open view of the sky so GPS satellites can be located. The metal
pole can be gently pushed into soft ground or lent against a fence (not electric)
2. The instrument is now operating. It can take up to 15 minutes for the unit to get a fix using
GPS satellites so it is recommended to keep the instrument operating for a minimum of 20
minutes at a given site to collect sufficient data.
3. When finished remove the leads from the battery to power down the instrument. Transport
the instrument to the next suitable site and repeat as required. NOTE: WHEN REMOVING
THE BATTERY LEADS, ENSURE THAT YOU PULL THE SPADE TERMINAL OFF THE BATTERY
AND DON’T PULL THE WIRE AS PULLING THE WIRE COULD DISLODGE THE WIRE FROM THE
SPADE TERMINAL CONNECTOR.
RETURN OF INSTRUMENT

1. When you have finished using the equipment:

i. Return the battery to the white cardboard box
ii. Remove the coaxial connector from the base of the antenna
