The unit will break if it Is held in a vice energised and released. The warranty will be negated. ‘The Startwell Starter is easy to install and operate. It requires no special sklls or tots. You should, however, stil read the following step-by-step instructions before fiting or operating the starter. Rotation: ‘The SNC, SDC, SDCH, SKC and SSXC starter ranges are designed for ant-clockwise rotation ‘engines only, viewed from the fywhee! end. In other words, the starter replaces clockwise fetation electrical, pneumatic or hydraule starters. (See Appendix I) © Engine Space: CCheck that you have sufficient room on the engine crank case to fit the statr. (See Appendix) Replacing the Original Starter: Remove the existing electric, pneumatic or hydrauc starting device, ensuring that you retain any spacers already presen, unless the starter model that you have already has’ spacer included wit & Make sure that while removing the ald starter you do nt disconnect the fuel shut-off valve. On ‘some apploations there may be an electrical engine shutoff valve. This can either be ‘operated by dec: supoly fom the battery or converted to manual shut oft. ‘Startwell Design: ‘You may find when ceplacing your current starter withthe Startwell Starter tat there is a diference between the numberof tect on the two pinions. This is a design feature adapted to allow a larger body diameter Starwel Starter feplace a smaller diameter electic starter. This is achieved by offseting the spigot and mounting holes of the starter from ‘its centreline and Increasing the number of teeth to compensate for this, Pre Installation check: ‘The Startwell Starter is designed eo that when installed on tho engine, in the unwound position, there @ between $ and 6 mm clearance between the pinion face and the flywheel ring gear. To censure that the clearance is correct, press the ‘check card! (provided) against the ring gear and censure the flange mounting face sits inthe green ‘area, (See Fig. 1) Flange Mounting Face “s 7 Alternative: Fig2 Fiywhes! Ring Gear measure the mounting face to. pinion face dimension %, and the mounting face to ring gear ‘Mounting depth 'Y. The distance Y-X should be between 3 and 5 Face mmm, (See Fig 2) Final Proparation: To complet the installation, tighten the nuts or bolts (oihionoverf appropriate for your application) tothe torque recommended by the engine manufacturer. ‘The starter js assembled so that in the majonty of application the winding handle is ina position sutable for you to wind the starter comfortably. I tis Is nt the case the angie of the winding handle can be changed to sut Ring your needs. See Postion Code Procedure, pa. & wot Gear “The Operating inetiction Sticker should be stuck close tothe engine, 20 that is clear'y Visible fo the starter operator. Operation 1. Ifthe state is fted on a tractor or mechanical handling vehicle, such as a fork it truck ora loader, ensure thatthe gearbox sin the neutral position (Check the fu! valve is in the ON’ position and that fut is reaching the fue! pump. ‘jst the thot to between 1/2 and 344 open, The trip lever (wth the red knob), ofthe starter, must be in an upright postion. I this is not the case, push the reset lever. The inp lever will immediately spring to is Upright positon 5. When starting an engine fited with an In-ne pump for the fst time, it may be necessary to press the excess fuel bution on the pump. 6, Fit the Cranking handle and wind the handle ia a clockwise direction uni ed oF ‘white springs are visible through the inspection windows (See Appendix Il for humiber of turns). With the white spring visible the starter is ready to start a wacm engine. With red springs visible the starter is ready to start a cold engine. 7. Tostart your engine, push the tip lever down through 90° 8. the engine does not start repeat the above steps. Your engine wil ermal start >) vwthin three attempts IMPORTANT. Do not attempt to start your engine with an electric or othor starter while the Startwell Startor Is wound and ongas Unwinding 1 afer fully winding the starter itis necessary o unwind and do-eneralze it, simply unwind the Crank handle in an anti-clockwise direction. itmay be necessary, at fst, to exert extra force to clisengage the clutch. Continue unwinding unil green springs are visible through the inspection windows. A this point the starter pinion wit also retract ois rest poston ‘Slow Engine Cranking The Stawell Starer can be used to slowiy crank an engine, for the adjustment of tappets, pump timing or equipment coupled to your engine \With the ed tip lever in the upright postion tum the winding handle clockwise for two tums, ‘This will engage the pinion with the ring gear. Now trp the lever through 90°. The reset mechanism wil pull I and fock the red inp lever In tls positon. The engine can now be lune slowly withthe winding handle, and any agustments, to the engine, may be made. (Once slow oranking is competed you should push the reset lever and eithr fully wind to start the engine (eee Operation) ar univind to dsangage the pinion (see Unwinding). Dual Starting Engines ‘Where the engine has the facility to be operated using two starters (or example an ar starter and the Starwel starter), he Starwell starter must have ts pinion disengaged from the ‘engine fywhoel when the alternative stator is being used. The pinion is disengaged by turing the winding handle in an antclackwise direction, unt no further unwinding is possible. (THIS also applies to vehicles fited with a Startwal starter that are being ‘bump’ started e.. forklifts, tractors) Cold Starting ‘When stating at ambient temperatures below 0'C, it will be necessary to use some form of starting aid. Staring can be achieved through various forms of ether-assisied aids which are availabe in aerosol cans or as auto stat kis. “To cold start proceed with normal starting operaton, Prior to tripping, spay the ether into the air inlake, or your engine fe filed with an auto start kt injact the ether inside the inlet ‘maniold. i the engine fails to star, repeat the whole operation immediately. The engine should now start Trouble Shooting (Components described inthis section are iustrated in ‘The Startwell Starter’ p9.3) (Operation of the your Startwell Starter shouldbe trouble fee, as long as the starter has been fied corecty (see instalation), and the correct engine and starter operation Is adhered to (see operation. If @ problem does occur its often possible forthe operator to identify and correct he situation, Faulty Winding Mechanism (On turing the winding handle two tums in a clockwise drection the winding adapter should rotate smoothly, thus causing the crive pinion to move forward and engage with the fyweel ring gear. Further rotaion should cause the spring pack to gradually compress as viewed ‘through the body inspection window.
