ABSTRACT

This project aims to develop a tour guide website for Ethiopia, leveraging technology to enhance
tourists' experiences and promote the country's rich cultural and natural heritage. The website will
serve as an interactive platform, offering valuable information, personalised itineraries, and
convenient booking services to both domestic and international travellers. It will showcase
Ethiopia's diverse attractions, including historical sites, cultural landmarks, breathtaking
landscapes, and unique local experiences. Through visually appealing content, travellers will be
able to explore destinations, learn about their historical significance, and access practical
information such as opening hours, entry fees, and transportation options. The website will also
provide personalised itineraries tailored to individual preferences and interests, leveraging
intelligent algorithms to suggest optimised routes for efficient use of time and resources.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

1.1.1 Motivation for this project


In this section of the proposal, we aim to show the limitations of current travel guide websites
and propose ideas we believe will solve these limitations.

Our website, being country-based, has a unique focus on showcasing lesser-known tourist attractions
that have yet to be discovered by many other travel guidance websites. Unlike most travel guidance
websites that tend to highlight only a few famous attractions, often overshadowing other potential
income sources, our platform aims to bring about a change. We recognize the untapped potential of
our country's tourism sector and strive to promote a wider range of attractions that have the ability
to generate more income. By doing so, our website aims to contribute to the growth and development
of the tourism industry in our country.

Most websites who work in this sector often resemble digital versions of traditional guide books,
offering advice on various aspects of travel such as destinations, attractions, accommodations, and
access information. While these tools prove beneficial for inexperienced travellers, they fall short in
providing post-arrival assistance.

In contrast to many travel guidance websites that are affiliated with travel agencies, our website
stands out as an unbiased and credible source of information. While some travel agencies may have
a reputation for overcharging foreigners, our platform serves as a trustworthy guru at hand. Our goal
is to empower travellers with reliable information and ensure they have a fair and transparent
experience throughout their journey.

1 .1 .2 Who is the Customer?


Our aim is to offer our services to all enthusiast travellers who wish to explore Ethiopia. This includes
both visitors from abroad and those residing within the country. We strive to cater to the diverse
needs and interests of individuals who are eager to discover the wonders of this remarkable
destination, regardless of their origin.

1.1.3 What the project will deliver. Is it a new product or an extension of an existing
one?
Currently, there are several websites whose core ideas seem to resonate with that of ours. But as
mentioned above, there are several changes and extensions we believe we can make to the existing
products. This change starts from specificity in area coverage.

Our website has the potential to deliver a wide range of detailed information and services to travellers
including valuable descriptions, photos, and videos of various destinations, including popular
attractions, landmarks, and points of interest, travel tips and advice along with their ratings.

We not only provide information on transportation and recommend accommodation such as hotels,
resorts, car rental, and other types of accommodations, but also walk you through the booking
system.

1.1.5 Which organizations are involved?


Key organisations involved in our project primarily consist of accommodation providers, including
hotels, resorts, and car rental companies. This strategic partnership is crucial as our website is
dedicated to assisting travellers in their booking process, aiming to enhance their overall travel
experience.

We emphasise our commitment to providing reliable and convenient booking services, ensuring that
travellers have access to a wide range of options for their accommodation needs. By collaborating
with these organisations, we aim to streamline the booking process and offer travellers a seamless
and efficient way to secure their accommodations.

1.2 The Existing System


Current existing systems offer several valuable benefits to travelers. They serve as comprehensive
digital guidebooks, providing advice and recommendations on various destinations. These websites
offer a wealth of information that can assist travelers in planning their trips effectively. These
websites often include user reviews and ratings, allowing travelers to gain insights from the
experiences of others. This helps in making informed decisions about destinations, accommodations,
and activities.

Although they offer many things, most current travel guidance websites that mainly work with
agencies have several shortcomings that need to be addressed. There is a lack of credibility and
trustworthiness, as some agencies have been known to overcharge foreigners, leading to a
negative perception of the industry. These websites often prioritise their own interests over the
needs of travellers, resulting in biassed recommendations and limited options. In addition, the
informationprovided by these websites may be outdated or incomplete, failing to meet the
evolving demands of modern travellers. Overall, there is a need for improved transparency,
unbiased advice, and up-todate information in the travel guidance industry.

Taking these specific shortcomings of traditional websites into consideration, We focus on proposing
innovative solutions to enhance the user experience for travellers once they have reached their
destination.

1.3 Statement of the Problem


Ethiopia's tourism industry is facing big challenges that need immediate attention to unlock its great
potential. The problems include not having reliable and complete tourist guides, limited awareness
of the country's diverse attractions, and a stagnant flow of income from tourism investments. These
problems have been going on for a long time and are stopping the tourism industry in Ethiopia from
growing. Current travel guide websites fail to provide a sufficient representation of the wide variety
of attractions available in the country; they have a tendency to focus on well-known locations while
neglecting lesser-known treasures that hold a lot of potential for tourists. In addition, a lot of these
websites are associated with travel agents, which results in suggestions that are slanted and opaque.
Tourists are also left without reliable information and support once they get to their destination in
case that complete post-arrival help is not provided. These ongoing problems have an adverse effect
on local populations, Ethiopia's general economic development, and tourists in the future in also
limiting the expansion and prosperity of the tourism sector in Ethiopia.

Efforts to address challenges in Ethiopia's tourism industry, including promotional campaigns,
infrastructure improvements, and tourism board establishment, have yielded limited results. Tourist
guide websites still lack comprehensive and reliable information, with a focus on popular
destinations, neglecting lesser-known attractions. Stagnant flow of income from tourism
investments hampers sector growth and prosperity.

Impact of the problem to surrounding populations


Challenges in Ethiopia's tourism industry hinder socio-economic development for local
communities, impact tourist experiences, and hinder the preservation of cultural and natural
heritage. Surrounding populations miss out on economic benefits, job opportunities, and business
growth.
Proposed Solution
We propose a solution that will help solve these problems. It's a website that will provide all the
information tourists need to explore Ethiopia. It will show all the different attractions in Ethiopia,
not just the popular ones. It will give unbiased advice and recommendations, so people can trust it.
And it will also help tourists when they arrive in Ethiopia, giving them all the information and
support they need.

Develop an exhaustive tourist guide website that enhances the travel experience for tourists by
providing a user-friendly platform to plan their entire trips, offering valuable information,
recommendations, and tools that simplify their journey and ensure a seamless and enjoyable travel
experience.

1.4.2 Specific Objective


Implement a tourist guide website within 3 months that smoothly connects tourists with popular
tourist sites, enables them to book flights and hotels, facilitates transportation arrangements, and
provides access to reliable tourist drivers and personal translators. The objective is to enhance the
country's tourism industry by improving efficiency and convenience for travellers, with a target of a
40% increase in tourist arrivals and overall tourism revenue within the first year of operation.

1.5 Proposed System


The proposed solution to address the challenges in Ethiopia's tourism industry and tourist guiding
system is the development of an advanced and comprehensive digital platform called" Zuret Tour
and Travel Guidance."

Zuret Tour and Travel Guidance will be a user-friendly website that provides a one- stop destination
for all trip- related information and services. It'll offer an inclusive traveller guide with detailed
information about many attractions, including popular destinations and lower- known gems.

The solution we are targeting, Zuret Tour and Travel Guidance, addresses the challenges that
we mentioned earlier by providing advanced digital platforms for tourists. Here are the key
aspects of the solution

1. Inclusive Destination Information: Zuret Tour and Travel Guidance will give detailed
information about Ethiopia's cultural, and natural attractions. It'll display not only the popular
tourist spots but also hidden gems, allowing guests to discover the lower- explored beauty of the
country.

2. Interactive Maps and Routes: The platform will include interactive maps and suggested
routes for tourists, making it easier for them to plan their plans and navigate through different

generated reviews and recommendations, allowing tourists to gain perceptivity from the experience
of fellow travellers. This will help in making informed opinions and discovering new attractions
predicated on authentic feedback.

4. Booking and Reservation System: The platform will offer a booking and reservation system
for accommodation, transportation, and guided tenures. Users can accessibly make reservations
through the platform, guaranteeing a better trip experience.

As an emerging website, there are several areas that need investment. The first is the cost of
developing the website itself, such as front-end and back-end development, user interface design,
and user experience optimization. In our case, fortunately, all of these are done by our project team
developers. This also applies for the potential cost of content creation that includes creating high-
quality and engaging content as we have graphic designers in our team.

When it comes to the cost of technology infrastructure which includes investments on hosting
services and cloud storage, it is avoided as we are making a mere simulation of the website for the
time being. The same applies for the user experience enhancement and maintenance cost which
needs continuously improving the website's features, functionality, and user interface based on user
feedback and market trends.

Regarding the cost of marketing and promotion, we have decided to utilise several social media sites
using trending hashtag challenges related to our content and by uploading them on our profile. As
our team has also mainly aimed to grow the country's tourism sector, we also look forward to
contacting and receiving aid from the Ethio-Tourism sector.

After the launching of our website, we plan to make revenue by charging the several accommodation
provider companies such as hotels, resorts and car rentals. We consider the pricing structure for
these revenue streams and estimate the potential income based on projected customer acquisition

As a way of risk assessment we have tried to Identify potential risks and challenges that may impact
our economic feasibility. This could include factors such as regulatory changes, technological
advancements, or unforeseen expenses. To address these risks, we plan to develop contingency plans
and risk mitigation strategies.

As you can infer from the above section, most of the costs are covered by the team itself. This is due
to the fact that our website is just an emerging one and doesn’t have a constant monetary source.

1.6.2. Technical Feasibility

The proposed tourist guide software, utilising React for the front end and Django for the back end,
demonstrates strong technical feasibility. Leveraging Google Drive for storage ensures reliable and
accessible data management. The team's diverse skill set, including UX/UI and front-end/back-end
experience, ensures a well-rounded development approach. With a focus on comprehensive
documentation and developer tools, the project is set to support integration and ease of use for
developers.

1.6.3. Schedule Feasibility

Our website project has a thoughtful and well-planned timeline for implementation and deployment
within a three-month timeframe. The project will commence with a comprehensive kickoff meeting
to define objectives, requirements, and assign clear roles and responsibilities to team members. The
initial weeks will focus on requirements gathering, planning, and design, where wireframes will be
created to guide the front-end development process. Simultaneously, the back-end development
phase will be initiated, ensuring the timely integration of server-side logic, APIs, and authentication
mechanisms. Content creation and integration will follow, with careful attention to organising and
managing the website's information. Rigorous testing and quality assurance procedures will be
conducted to ensure a robust and bug-free website

The provided timeline assumes an average of 3 hours of daily work by each group member. However,
it is important to consider potential challenges, unforeseen circumstances, and the need for

additional time for certain tasks. Regular monitoring and adjustment of the timeline will be
necessary to ensure successful project completion within the three-month timeframe.

1.7 Scope
Here below is the scope to our tour guide website which helps tourists explore popular
tourist destinations in Ethiopia, browse through an extensive directory of
accommodations, restaurants, and attractions and plan our journey with ease.

• Flight booking functionality: for the time being our website doesn’t provide flight booking
services so the tourists should book their flights for themselves.
• E-commerce features for selling travel-related products: and again since there is no
prevalence of e-commerce in Ethiopia we are not able to assist tourists in shopping journeys.

The lack of sufficient income from tourism investment in Ethiopia poses a significant challenge that
requires immediate attention. Multiple factors contribute to this issue, including the absence of
reliable and comprehensive tourist guides for the country's remarkable sites, as well as a lack of
awareness among potential visitors about the diverse range of tourist attractions available in
Ethiopia. In order to tackle these obstacles head-on, we present a solution in the form of a
comprehensive website designed to revolutionise the tourism landscape. It will provide detailed
information regarding nearby hotels and guest houses, and valuable suggestions for car rental
companies located in close proximity to the various tourist sites. By amalgamating these crucial
components, our website will serve as a powerful tool to not only bridge the gap between tourists
and Ethiopia's hidden treasures but also revitalise the tourism industry by generating increased
revenue and fostering a sense of exploration and cultural appreciation among its visitors.

1.8.2 Requirement Elicitation

In order to ensure the precise definition of the website's we will be using focus group and survey
methods. After one week we are going to prepare a Google document for 20 peoples who have
experiences of travelling in Ethiopia to get to the problems they have faced.

To ensure the efficacy and relevance of our digital endeavour, it is imperative that we embrace a
proactive approach in refining our project trajectory. Thus, we advocate for the execution of a robust
survey and focus group within the upcoming two weeks. These strategic initiatives will serve as the
bedrock upon which we build a user-centric platform that caters to the diverse needs and preferences
of our target audience. A survey will afford us invaluable quantitative insights, allowing us to discern
the expectations and preferences of potential users. Simultaneously, a focus group will delve into
qualitative aspects, unearthing nuanced perspectives that may not be apparent through statistical
data alone. By integrating the findings from these methodologies, we can sculpt a website that not
only meets but exceeds user expectations, fostering a seamless and enriching tourist experience in
Ethiopia. Embracing this proactive stance demonstrates our commitment to delivering a product
that is not only visually appealing but also functionally robust, ensuring that our digital tourist guide

In our quest to create an exceptional tourist guide website, we will carefully consider each aspect of
the design and development process.

Firstly, we will employ Figma, a powerful design tool, to craft a visually captivating and userfriendly
website. Figma's collaborative features will enable efficient teamwork and seamless collaboration
among multiple team members, fostering a cohesive and efficient design process.

Secondly, we will prioritise user experience (UX) design, ensuring that the website is intuitive and
easy to navigate for tourists. By creating a seamless user experience, we aim to provide a platform
that effortlessly guides visitors through Ethiopia's diverse attractions. Our focus will be on designing
an aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging interface that captures the essence of Ethiopia's rich
cultural heritage, evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Performance optimization is another crucial aspect we will address. We will ensure that our identified
constraints are integrated into the project, we'll adopt a systematic approach. This involves
incorporating constraints into the project plan, regularly revisiting them during team meetings, and
implementing feedback loops to address any deviations. This strategy aims to uphold our project
integrity and meet defined constraints effectively.

Scalability and compatibility are paramount considerations in our website's design. We will ensure
that the website is designed to be scalable, allowing for future expansion and updates as the tourism
industry evolves. Additionally, we will make the website compatible with various devices, including
desktops, tablets, and mobile phones. This multi-device compatibility will enable a wide range of
users to access and enjoy the website's features, irrespective of the device they use.

Lastly, we embrace a philosophy of continuous improvement. Throughout the development process,


we will incorporate feedback loops and design iterations, consistently seeking opportunities to
enhance the website's features and usability. By actively listening to user feedback and engaging in
ongoing improvements, we aim to deliver a dynamic and ever-evolving website that exceeds the
expectations of tourists, providing them with an exceptional online resource for their Ethiopian
adventure.

1.8. 4 Development Phase

In order to bring our vision to life, we will meticulously implement each aspect of the website's
development process.

Firstly, the front-end of the website will be implemented using a combination of HTML, CSS, and
JavaScript. These foundational web technologies will enable us to create a visually appealing and

responsive user interface. To enhance interactivity and deliver dynamic user experiences, we will
leverage the power of React, a JavaScript library renowned for its ability to build highly interactive
and efficient UI components. By utilising React, we aim to elevate the overall user experience,
offering smooth navigation and engaging interactions throughout the website.

Moving to the back-end implementation, we will employ the Django framework. Django is a robust
and scalable framework that provides a solid foundation for handling user requests, managing
databases, and seamlessly integrating various functionalities into the website. With Django's
comprehensive set of tools and libraries, we can efficiently handle complex operations, ensuring the
website performs optimally and delivers a seamless user experience. This framework will enable us
to manage user authentication, handle data storage and retrieval, and seamlessly integrate external
services such as the hotel reservation system and tourist site recommendation system.

Integration plays a vital role in our website's success, we will rigorously integrate the hotel
reservation system, tourist site recommendation system, and car rental company suggestions into
the website. By integrating these components, we aim to provide valuable information and services
to tourists, simplifying their travel planning process and enhancing their overall experience. The
integration will be carefully implemented to ensure smooth interactions, accurate data retrieval, and
reliable functionality, ultimately maximising the utility and convenience of the website for its users.

Through meticulous front-end and back-end implementation, as well as seamless integration of


essential features, our website will offer an immersive and comprehensive platform that caters to the
needs of tourists visiting Ethiopia. By combining the power of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Django,
and various external services, we are committed to delivering a high-quality website that showcases
Ethiopia's beauty and cultural richness while providing practical tools and recommendations to
enhance the travel experience of all visitors.

1.8.5 Testing

We have planned to test the product by giving access to the users in the requirement analysis to the
website and checking whether the website has solved their problem. If not we will analyse the
feedback and make necessary improvements to enhance the website's effectiveness in all aspects.

To evaluate the overall functionality and behaviour of the complete system and we use this because
of to ensure that all components work together as intended, addressing aspects like navigation, data
integrity, and system performance.
