What is smart tourism and why is it so BIG?
The term "smart tourism" refers to travel experiences that are tailored to the technical
capabilities of the traveller or the destination. Nowadays, a lot of tourist locations are
updating their offerings to make greater use of smart technology in anything from interactive
activities to payment systems.
Through the application of technical advances and practices, smart tourism seeks to
maximise competitiveness, increase resource management efficiency, and promote
sustainability. It is frequently linked to e-tourism because it will entail technological use.

China is a major location in the smart tourism business. Using a provided QR code, visitors
may use their phones to read information about the destination or attraction they are
visiting, order meals, pay for cabs and monitor wait times.
An explanation of "smart" tourism: In recent years, the phrase "smart" has taken on a bit of a
buzz.

To put it simply, something must possess sophisticated technological capabilities in order to

be considered "smart." These capabilities enable the extraction of a variety of data, which is
subsequently utilised to inform the creation and functioning of products. Even while the
typical tourist might not be aware of what occurs behind the scenes, a lot of work probably.

Though the terms "smart" and "technology" are not synonymous, they are inextricably linked
in today's society. Destinations, attractions, and other stakeholders in the tourism sector will
use a range of technology breakthroughs and techniques to become "smart" (these are
explained shortly). Therefore, the core idea of "smart tourism" is the use of technology.
Up until now, not much research has been done on smart tourism. The majority of research
in this field, however, focuses on "smart destinations" or "smart cities."
The following are some of the advantages that Smart Tourism Destinations leverage: (1)
technology integrated surroundings; (2) micro and macro responsive processes; (3) end-user
devices across many touchpoints; and (4) engaged stakeholders who use the platform
dynamically as a neural system.1

Different forms of intelligent travel

There is no doubt that technology is at the core of smart tourism. However, what matters
most is how this technology is applied to improve the efficiency of the tourism agent. Five of
the most popular approaches to adopting smart tourism are listed below.

There are numerous approaches to implementing smart tourism as long as the goals of
improved resource management, sustainability, and competitiveness are met. There are
basically five methods for doing this, however there are other options as well. These five
strategies are: smart research and management tools; smart information sharing; smart
accessibility alternatives; smart sustainability initiatives; and smart tourism experiences.

A significant facet of intelligent travel is the sustainability domain. Effective smart tourism
programmes should place a strong emphasis on sustainability, including lowering carbon
emissions, implementing eco-friendly practices, and considering the requirements of the host
communities.

Organisations can leverage market technology in a variety of ways to enhance their

sustainability initiatives.

Smart and Innovative Tourism Development
What is meant by "smart tourism"?
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) describes the travel industry as
a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon where people travel to different countries or

In many ways, smart tourism is a logical development from the traditional travel industry
and, more recently, the e-travel industry. This is because the foundation for industry and
consumer advancement and mechanical direction was laid at the perfect moment with the
widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the travel
industry.

Within the travel business, accommodations, coffee shops, travel agencies, car rental
companies, and entertainment projects all provide new kinds of support. The tourism
industry is one that is growing and driven by demand. However, the travel industry is more
than just a company that provides services related to the travel sector. JOURNAL OF
CRITICAL REVIEWS products to travellers who take part in travel industry exercises and
need the administration of these projects. The travel industry experience is influenced by the
socio-social design of the surrounding area, as well as brain science and traveller
propensities, due to the theoretical concept of the travel industry products. As a result, local
businesses compete with one another to keep tourists happy and wanting more. Therefore,
progress is essential to. 2

Enhancing productivity and development is another reason why experts concentrate on
visitor advancement. This is only feasible provided that the consumer feels satisfied and at
home. Individuals in the mass tourism industry, in particular, share their personal
experiences to offer valuable insights. Advances in data and correspondence innovation
relating to the travel sector enable businesses to analyse customer information more
thoroughly and efficiently. This makes it possible to create data sets for market, association,
cycle, and item propels.

The term "smart" describes changes in technology, economy, and society that are fueled by
technological infrastructure. The most significant indication of addressing the idea of smart
in these innovations is the utilisation of technological views, massive data, open data, new
ways of connecting, and information exchange. The Smart idea promotes cooperation and
communication between people or organisations rather than rewarding individuals. By
shrinking the world into a small village, enhancing communication, facilitating information
exchange and coordination, and breaking down and simplifying intricate scientific models,
smart systems help to make the world a smaller place.

Through applications like smart cards and cell phones, "smart" innovation is constantly
woven into our daily lives. It is supported by a variety of real foundations and addresses
situations like the wise plant and keen house. The concept of a "shrewd city," equipped with
modern innovation as a cornerstone of development, is actually and rationally being
developed by the travel industry, without resorting to assets in the idea of manageability.
Smart cities make use of cutting-edge information and communication technology to lower
consumption and boost resource efficiency. The standard of living for residents, or those who
live in cities, has increased as a result of these developments. 3

Conclusion on smart tourism
Will there be smarter travel in the future? Yes, I would say so. Around the world, there are
many outstanding instances of smart tourism efforts, with China and other nations setting
the standard. However, despite the clear increase in smart tourism, there is a lack of
information on the topic, especially in the academic community.

The globe has embraced smart city technology, and travel destinations are starting to see
how they can promote corporate innovation, sustainability, accessibility, branding and
marketing, and cultural heritage preservation. Technology has a significant role to play in
fostering a participatory approach to tourist governance and development, as demonstrated
by recent industry initiatives like DMOcracy.

For my part, I'm looking forward to seeing how the tourism sector develops in this area in
the upcoming years! How do you feel?
