Assignment #2
BSCE 1-3 03/13/23
Instructions: You will draw your own cave. Inside the cave, illustrate the following personal
shadows from your life (the things that you falsely believe in/superficial truths). The cave drawing
can be done digitally or hand drawn. Then explain how the elements in the allegory are connected
to your life and how you can be like the enlightened man from the cave.

1. Change is impossible
- Dealing with someone who constantly lies has led me to believe that change is
unattainable and people aren't really capable of changing for the better. It has also
occurred to me that changes are typically transient and mostly temporary. For instance,
if a person commits a sin and is given the opportunity to apologize and be forgiven, it
will not take long for the person to commit another sin due to the lust for temptation.
Hence, even if people are capable of changing, humans are still naturally drawn to
temptation.

2. Two-Faced Mask
- As a people-pleaser, I made myself believe that I am always available because I am
someone you can solely rely on. I also perceive myself as a proficient person who can
support anyone. However, as I looked in the mirror and saw my own reflection, I
suddenly realized that trying to satisfy and accommodate everyone left me feeling
mentally and physically worn out. It made me vulnerable, anxious, and overly cautious,
especially if one of my closest friends or family members stopped relying on me,
leading me to question my abilities. Thus, I am still glad that I could be a trustworthy
and dependable person.

3. Time is short
- As a student, cramming is my forte. I have always believed that time is limited. I always
blame time for cramming some of my homework without much consideration for my
own negligence. However, due to health issues, I've come to the realization that I'm
dreadful at managing my time and admit my mistake of not utilizing and maximizing
my time wisely. As a result, I now view time as being endless and unchanging.

4. Explain how the elements in the allegory are connected to your life and how you can be
like the enlightened man from the cave.
- After hearing and seeing the allegory of the cave's story, I've come to understand that
the truth is not only seen, but rather discovered. As a person who represents the
prisoners and is a proponent of the adage "to see is to believe," the story's elements
induced me to reconsider my personal convictions. The story's concept dealt with a
personal dilemma, as the cave signifies my own personal boundaries, which prevent
me from discovering the truth of reality. However, the light in the cave had
symbolized a channel of optimism, urging me to become enlightened in hopes of
obtaining freedom as I challenged myself to venture beyond my comfort zone. Thus,
as I become an enlightened man, it is my responsibility to share my knowledge and
uncover to the prisoners the truth of reality relating to our current political issue in
our country. Being educated entails obligations, and it is our duty to inform people
specifically concerning the transgressions of the government officials in our country.
Thus, I should use my knowledge wisely and help those who are ignorant, helping
them realize the reality of the situation.
