Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It's linked to
nearby Sweden via the Öresund bridge. Copenhagen, its capital, is home to royal palaces and colorful
Nyhavn harbor, plus the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic “Little Mermaid” statue.
Denmark in EU
In 1972, Denmark joined the European Economic Community (EEC) -
the leading economic partnership in Europe - which later became
the European Union. Denmark was also one of the founding
members of the United Nations (UN) and continues to be a member
of the military alliance - the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
(NATO). Today, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy ruled by a
representative democracy and a strong defender of free trade and
human rights.

In the early 1970s, however, the Mideast oil crisis put an end to that
development. ‘Car Free Sundays’ were introduced in Copenhagen,
and protests demanding Copenhagen to become car-free took place.
Hygge
The word hygge dates back to around 1800, at least in the meaning it
has today. However, various definitions of hygge can be traced back to
the Middle Ages, where a similar Old Norse word meant "protected
from the outside world."
