Static calculation of drainage and sewage networks

According to conventional static calculation methods of drainage and

sewage networks, which are described in EN 1295-1, vitrified clay pipes
and fittings are to be classified under rigid pipe systems. They can di-
rectly absorb soil and traffic loads due to their high loading capacity.
Pipe deformations or changes in pipe diameter occur during the lifetime
of drainage and sewage networks neither under external nor internal
load influence. The static calculation is based on the carrying capacity
(compressive force) taking into account the soil and traffic loads and
other load effects.

The strength of vitrified clay pipes and fittings remains unchanged dur-
ing the whole service life time. Likewise, they are also resistant to the
alternating stress due to road and railway traffic. For proof of the loading
capacity, the loads acting on the pipes are compared with the resistance
of the pipes. The safety factors to be considered can be found in the
calculation rules.

For the structural safety, the fabrication of pipe zone with the bedding
(lower and upper bedding layer), the lateral backfill and cover are deci-
sive.
Static calculations according to the DWA worksheet A 127 provide a reli-
able assessment of existing load on the pipe. The result of the static cal-
culation is the information of the required bedding.

The possibility of a structural analysis on the infor-

mation pool is available to partners and customers, as
a free service. The user can perform static calculations
personally or let it be calculated by means of the
"Online static computer". Registration for the Info pool
is done under: www.steinzeug-keramo.com

The EN 1610 requires that a static calculation be done before laying the
pipe. Furthermore, recalculations are to be carried out after detection of
deviations from the first calculation. Here, the contractor has a special
obligation to check deviations from the original static calculations and its
impact on the load capacity of the pipeline.

The static verification is based on the DWA worksheet A 127 for open
trench installation and A 161 for pipe jacking.

For the open trench laying, the following bedding types apply:

1. Gravel-sand beddings - 60°, 90°, 120°

2. Concrete beddings - 90°, 120°, 180°
3. Side concrete beddings - 90°, 120°, 180°

For the execution, it is to be ensured that the upper bedding layer is at

least equal in thickness to the dimension of the calculated reaction angle.
