Experiment No 00: Trialing vital electronics laboratory equipment

Apparatus:
Multimeters, Oscilloscope, DC power supply, Signal generator, breadboard, and
unknown resistor, capacitor, connecting wires

Aim:
Identifying the laboratory equipment.
Understand the breadboard and the way of connecting circuitry for analytical processes
Familiarize with measuring equipment

Theory and Diagrams:

In this practical, the objective is to familiarize yourself with essential electronic equipment and
measuring systems. Your demonstrator will give you a brief introduction to the basics. Please pay
close attention to it!

Procedure:
Part I
1) Connect the circuit as shown in figure 1. (Use two
multimeters to measure current and voltage)

2) Here the voltage across the unknown resistor is given

by equation (1)

3) Change the supply voltage and measure

the current through the circuit and the voltage across the
unknown resistor . Do this for at least 6 data points

Figure 1: Circuit diagram of a resistor network 4) Plot the graph vs. and calculate the value
of the unknown resistor from the slope of the graph

5) What do you get if you divide by the current through the circuit for each reading? And
Why?

6) Determine the standard value of the unknown resistor using the color band on it

7) Does the standard value agree with your results? If not, why?

Part II
8) Turn ON the signal generator and oscilloscope

9) Connect one of the channels of the oscilloscope to the signal generator and adjust the ground
level of the oscilloscope before taking measurements

10) Generate and sinusoidal waveform using the signal generator. Adjust the
sensitivities vol/div and time/div to observe an entire waveform on the oscilloscope screen

11) Measure the period of the signal and calculate the frequency using the observations. Is it the
same as the supplied frequency?

12) Change the

using the oscilloscope

Part III
13) Setup the circuit shown in figure 2

14) Observe the waveforms before and after

the capacitor using the oscilloscope
simultaneously

15) What are the differences in the Channel A

and B signals

16) A student suggests that there should be a

phase shift between Channel A and B. Is it

correct from your observations? If so, what is
the angle of the phase shift?
