ALCOHOL AND SMOKING POLICY

1. Purpose and scope

1.1 The smoking of tobacco products is harmful to your health and to the health of
children, pregnant or breastfeeding women and non-smokers.

1.2 This policy aims to provide a healthy, comfortable and safe working environment
for all employees, visitors and sub-contractors to TEWO BUILDING AND CIVIL
CONTRACTORS premises. This policy conforms to current legislation enforcing
the ban of tobacco products, e-cigarettes and related products as stated in the
Disaster Management Act 2002 section 27 as amended on the 29th April 2020

1.3 The objectives of this policy are firstly, the promotion of health and safety and
prevention of disease to all Company employees and other persons on the
Company premises through the elimination of ETS, and secondly, to comply with
the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2002 section 27 as amended on
the 29th April 2020, OHS act 85 OF 1993 with regards to duties of employees
and employers and to a large extent by the guidelines of COVID 19 at places of
work.
2. Normative references

3. Definitions

3.1 Premises means offices, service centres, or vehicles where a person performs
work in the course of his/her employment.

3.2 Company means TEWO BUILDING & CIVIL CONTRACTORS and any of its
branches/sites.

3.3 Areas means all partially closed public places such as covered patios,
balconies, walkways and parking lots.
4. Policy
4.1 Effective as of April 29th 2020, all employees will comply with a “no smoking”
policy at all premises of the company (including construction sites) and as such
these environments will be designated as “smoke-free” areas.
4.2 Staff and visitors to the company premises are requested to refrain from
smoking
4.3 Staff will not be permitted to smoke at all when at work and as such there will
be neither smoke breaks nor smoking areas.
4.4 Alcohol testing may only be done using single use test units, and must be
disposed of in the appropriate contaminated waste bins provided on site;
4.5. Drug testing will only be done by an occupational health facility either using
urine or blood sampling;

5. Smoking permitted areas

5.1 There shall be no “special smoking “ zones at all company premises and
construction sites
5.2 “NO SMOKING “signage shall be erected at the entrance to and within
company premises and construction sites.

6 Information, education, training and supervision

6.1 All employees are to be fully conversant with Tewo Building and Civil
Contractors policy on smoking, the reason for its introduction, and how it
relates to the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and
ultimately the Disaster Management Act (2002) – Sec 27 as amended on the
29th April 2020.

6.2 The Company’s smoking policy must be communicated to all employees and
contractors respectively.

6.3 On the Company premises where customers and subcontractors are routinely
provided with attention or service, appropriate signage would be displayed and
clients would be courteously reminded to not smoke at all while on the
premises.

7 Responsibilities
7.1 Each manager and employee of the company is responsible for adherence to
and enforcement of this policy. Non-compliance will lead to disciplinary action
being taken against offenders. The offence will further be regarded as a serious
offence in terms of the company's disciplinary code and procedure. It has been
legislated that offenders may also be liable to a fine if found guilty of non-
compliance. Furthermore, authorities may be notified in terms of COVID 19
guidelines.
7.2 Employees are responsible for complying with the provisions of this policy,
which encompasses the general duties of employees at work as contemplated
in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

8 Transgression

8.1 Disciplinary action will be taken against persons who transgress this policy.

8.3 As per Disaster Management Act, 2002, Sec 27 as amended on the 29 th April
2020 and the Occupational Health & Safety act 85 of 1993.
