How to transfer registration

online
If you sell or dispose of your vehicle (for
example, a car, motorcycle, heavy vehicle,
caravan or trailer) or boat to another person,
you may be eligible to transfer the registration
out of your name with our online service.

This transaction can be made as soon as you

sell your vehicle or boat, but must be within 14
days from the date of sale. Read about what
conditions apply to the seller for this online
service.

If you have purchased or acquired a vehicle or

boat and the seller has lodged an application to
transfer the registration online or in person,
you can complete the transfer of registration
into your name online. The registration must
be transferred within 14 days after the sale
and transfer fees will apply. Read about what
conditions apply to the buyer for this online
service.

These services are only available for some

Queensland registered vehicles and boats. You
cannot transfer the Queensland registration
into another state or territory or vice-versa.

Transferring registration online as a

seller
You can use this service if you are:

transferring your vehicle or boat's

registration to 1 person only, who has a
Queensland driver licence or customer
reference number—registrations cannot
be transferred online to more than 1
person or to an organisation

not claiming an exemption from

providing a safety certificate.

You cannot use this service if your vehicle or

boat:

is currently under a Number Plate

Confiscation Notice issued by the
Queensland Police Service

is subject to enforcement action by the

State Penalties Enforcement Registry
(SPER)

is fitted with a gas fuel system or other

gas system (for vehicles only)

has personalised plates attached

is registered with a purpose of use other

than private or commercial

is conditionally registered

is a bus or minibus

is mobile machinery

is a special interest vehicle

is a motorised mobility device

(motorised wheelchair/mobility scooter)

is 15m or more in length (for boats only).

To transfer your registration online you will

need to provide your details and the buyer's
details, such as their driver licence number,
name and email address. Other information
such as the date of sale, dutiable value and
odometer reading are also required.

If you have sold your boat you need to know

how and where the buyer intends to store the
boat.

For vehicles and trailers (with an aggregate

trailer mass over 750kg) you will need a
current electronically issued safety certificate
or certificate of inspection. This certificate
needs to be recorded with the Department of
Transport and Main Roads before you can
transfer the registration online. Contact the
approved inspection station where your
certificate was issued for more information.

If you are given a handwritten certificate or an

unassigned* certificate please present this in
person at a transport and motoring customer
service centre to have it recorded before
transferring the registration online. If you live
in a rural area, a QGAP office, Magistrates
Court or local police station that provides
vehicle registration services can also record
the certificate.

Transfer registration online as seller

After you transfer your registration online, you

may view, print or send a copy of the
confirmation to your email address.
*An unassigned certificate is issued when your vehicle's details

are not recorded in our system (for example, interstate

registered vehicles) or do not match what is already recorded

in our system.

Transferring registration online as a

buyer
You can use this service if:

the seller has lodged an application to

transfer the registration online or in
person—you will receive an email if the
registration transfer has been lodged
online

you are transferring a Queensland

registered vehicle or boat into 1 name
only—registrations cannot be
transferred online to more than 1 person
or to an organisation

you have a Queensland driver licence or

customer reference number

you are not claiming an:

exemption from providing a safety

certificate

you are not applying a concession to the

To transfer your registration online you need

to provide your Queensland driver licence
number or customer reference number, the
dutiable value, odometer reading and purpose
of use. Transfer fees apply and you will need to
pay the registration renewal if it is expired.

If you are transferring a boat registration you

will need to provide the boat's storage
method, place and postcode.

Transfer registration online as buyer

If the seller has lodged an application to

transfer the registration online, you don't have
to complete the transaction online if you can't
or don’t want to.

You can visit a transport and motoring

customer service centre to complete the
transaction, whether the seller has lodged an
application online or in person. If you live in a
rural area, you can visit a QGAP office,
Magistrates Court or local police station that
provides vehicle registration services—please
call to confirm before visiting.
