For needle turn appliqué, trace the shapes onto the right side of your fabrics. Cut out leaving a scant ¼”.
Position the pieces onto the background fabric, pin or fabric glue baste pieces, (lower pieces down first).
Use the needle to turn the raw edge under to the traced line and stitch using matching thread with tiny
stitches.
If using Fusible Appliqué Paper with a glue pen. Remember to reverse designs before tracing onto the
dull side of the paper. (You can trace onto the shiny side with some pens, in which case you wouldn’t need to reverse the
design). Transfer numbers to pieces so you know where they go. Iron onto wrong side of fabric and then
cut out with a scant ¼” allowance. Fold fabric edges to back & glue with temporary glue pen. Pieces that
go under the edge of others will not need that edge turned under. Pin or glue baste pieces into position on
background fabric and stitch into place. If using iron on Appliqué Paper this is left inside as it semi
dissolves leaving soft fibres.
Alternatively use your preferred method.
Stitchery :
Once appliqué pieces are attached, trace on the stitchery design using a fine permanent pen or pencil. Iron the
fabric stabiliser to the back of the fabric (Optional).
Join 5 x 2½” squares together and attach to left side of the appliqué/stitchery. Join the remaining 5 together &
attach to the right side. Press seams inward.
If you wish you can quilt the cushion front as desired. Cut a piece of wadding/Pellon slightly larger than the
pillow front. Position on the wrong side of the pillow top and then quilt your design.
To make the cushion backing, take the 2 fabric pieces cut earlier. Fold under ¼” and then fold under ¼” again,
along the two edges that will be in the centre back of the cushion, and top stitch.
Position the backing pieces onto the wrong side of the pillow back with right sides facing up and placing the
smaller piece on top, overlapping in the middle. Pin layers around the edge to hold them together. Place aside
until binding is made.
Binding :
Double Fold : Join binding pieces together to form one long strip, fold in half and press. OR
Single Fold : Join binding pieces together to form one long strip.
Place cushion with front facing up on the table. Attach binding onto the front side of the cushion using ¼”
seam around the outer edge. Trim excess wadding/Pellon from around the edges. Fold binding over to back
and hand stitch in place.
Pillow Insert : Cut a piece of fabric 9” x 38”. Fold in half with right sides together to measure 9” x 19” and
stitch around all 3 sides leaving an opening for turning. Turn right sides out and fill with toy fill. Stitch
opening closed.
