Introduction Case

Speed of build
Risk to the client is reduced through predictability and speed of
programme which in turn offers a quicker return on investment in
comparison to traditional building methods.
Rapid dry envelope – SFS assists in reducing the time to achieve
a watertight structure when compared to traditional building
methods. This facilitates earlier access for follow–on trades
which subsequently reduces the build programme.

Sustainability
Light gauge steel offers high strength to weight ratio and
therefore reduces material usage over traditional materials.
Light gauge steel walls offer A ratings in the BRE Green Guide.
Steel sections are 100% recyclable. This is increasingly important
as the lifetime environmental impact of buildings is further
scrutinised to meet tighter Government legislation.
Light gauge steel reduces the overall weight of walling relative to
blockwork reducing loads imposed on foundations.

Quality and Cost

Lightweight cold-rolled steel sections are precision engineered
products manufactured to tight tolerances ensuring exact
performance resulting in less time spent on-site correcting errors
and solving problems.
Steel is dimensionally stable and does not suffer from shrinkage.

Tight tolerances – high dimensional accuracy of construction

gives long term reliability.
The rapid construction characteristic of Kingframe SFS allows
the client to realise significant productivity savings compared to
traditional building methods.
SFS can incorporate a vast array of architectural treatments and
features and allows large spans and large structural openings to
be formed with reduced requirement for windposts.
‘Just-in-time’ – delivery of components as needed allows
construction on tight sites, lowering costs in site management
and storage facilities.
Kingframe SFS has been assessed and is CE Marked in
line with the Kingspan Declaration of Performance No:
CPR-2013.SFS.001. Covered by Harmonised Standard
BS EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011

Design
If requested, schemes can be fully detailed prior to rolling,
exposing potential clashes at the design stage thereby resolving
them before they become costly problems on-site.
If required, our in-house design team can be involved at all
stages of the project to offer the most cost-effective design
solution.

Service
Introduction & Support

Depending on the characteristics of the project,

Kingspan are able to offer the following levels of
service and support.

Proposal
Upon receipt of a request for SFS, Kingspan create a proposal
document. This gives a specification for stud sizes, aperture
detailing and any non-standard details.
This document can be used to price the work and becomes the
basis for proceeding to Basic or Full Design.

Basic Design
With our ‘Basic’ design service, we will conduct a review of the
Architects and Structural Engineers drawings to find the most
commonly repeated details across your project.
We will then undertake a structural design for agreed selected
bay drawings and associated details and produce a typical
elevation drawing and specification indicating appropriate
section sizes for the various elements in the panel. Beswick, Manchester, UK
Any non-standard areas or details will be specifically highlighted
as part of the review.
All elements included in the Basic Design are covered by the
Kingspan design warranty.
Calculations for each panel can be provided upon confirmation in
writing that steel will be procured from Kingspan.
O&M Manuals are provided upon completion of the
design work.

NB: This service is relevant to infill schemes and will not generally be offered
in oversail or load bearing situations.

NB: Load bearing structures are outside the scope of this document - Seek
advice from Kingspan Technical Department.

Technical System
Manual Overview

The Kingframe Steel Framing System (SFS) is a component supply structural stud façade system
commonly used in two main methods: Infill and Oversail. The system consists of C shaped studs and
U shaped tracks designed on a project specific basis to form the inner leaf of an external façade.

Both systems are constructed on-site and must be designed and Both systems achieve early weather protection of the

can be fully accommodated.

Infill Systems are typically supported at the slab edge between

hot-rolled steel or concrete structures. This allows insulation and
external finishes to be installed outside the main structural frame if
the correct tolerance scheme is adopted. The system is suitable for
both low and high-rise construction. A deflection allowance is
required at each floor level.

Oversail Systems are fitted outside the line of the structural frame
using support cleats at each floor level with connections designed
to allow slab deflection. It is particularly suited to situations where
cladding materials are sensitive to differing movement of the main
frame. Adequate base support must be provided to accommodate
vertical loading.

Live Load Deflection

Every structure, whether concrete or steel, will move when placed
under load during normal use. This is anticipated within the design
of the building by the engineers and must be accommodated
within the SFS system. This movement is in the vertical plane and
is normally at its maximum displacement at mid-span between
vertical supports e.g. columns. The expected total movement may
be calculated by using the formula below in the absence of specific
guidance from the design engineer;

Span between supporting columns divided by

Manual Fixings

Kingspan do not generally sell fixings associated with SFS. Set out below are standard SFS fixings from a variety of manufacturers. All fixings
stated are recommendations only. All connections from the SFS to any interfacing structure or material must be checked for suitability and
design with Kingspan and the third party supplier prior to construction. Installers may also wish to use other fixings – this should be
communicated to Kingspan at the start of the project (prior to design commencing) such that they can be checked for suitability and
incorporated into the design.

Structural Openings structural bolts.
Structural openings are formed in the same manner as the Infill
method. However, due to increased loading conditions at jambs,
lintels and cills, the support bracketry to these elements may
require heavier gauges and increased fixing capacities.

Where openings do not align floor on floor, it may be impractical to

use traditional oversail SFS. In these instances, single storey
‘overfills’ may be formed outside the line of the building using
bespoke bracketry as shown in detail D.03.

Technical Cladding
Manual Treatments

The typical cladding build-ups shown in this section are for guidance only. The project architect or
cladding contractor is to maintain responsibility for the overall performance of the wall and their
detailing should be deferred to in all instances.

Masonry
Typical Wall Build Up
SFS design with masonry outer leaf cladding is generally formed as
shown below;

Kingspan Thermawall TW55 Insulation

Kingspan SFS stud

50mm cavity Brick tie channel available from Kingspan

Internal drylining board by others

External brickwork by others

Wall tie with drip available from KSBS

All masonry must be dead loaded to a suitable support

(slab edge angle or ground slab) as the SFS is designed to
withstand horizontal loads only in this case.

Brick Tie Studs

All fixings of brick tie channels are to be fixed back to the SFS
through the insulation. In instances around structural openings,
an additional stud is provided at a nominal 150mm from the line of
the opening to accept the channel as Detail F.01.

64
Technical Cladding

Insulated Render
Lightweight insulated render systems can be fully supported by the
SFS. There are generally two types of system though these vary in
their detail and application between manufacturers; direct applied
and cavity systems.

Kingspan SFS stud

Kingspan Kooltherm® K5 EWB Insulation

Decorative render by others
Cement fibre board by others

Internal drylining board by others

Bedding mortar and reinforcing mesh

Mushroom fixing to hold insulation to Kingspan stud

Direct Applied Systems

When the render build up is applied either adhesively or
mechanically to the SFS, there are no special requirements to
consider. A typical wall build up is given above;

Cavity Systems
Where a drainage / ventilation cavity is required, the same
principles are to be adopted from a masonry outer leaf build up,
only if using render on block. If using ventilated render on rail
system adopt principles for Terracotta Rainscreen.
NB. Allowance to be made for movement joints if required.

65
Technical Cladding
Manual Treatments

Terracotta Rainscreen
Terracotta tile systems may be supported from an SFS system.
The dead weight and loadings of the chosen system must be
communicated to Kingspan engineers to check the adequacy
of a given stud arrangement. There are typically two main types
of support to a tile based system; horizontal and vertical
supporting rails.

Kingspan Kooltherm® K15

Rainscreen Insulation Kingspan SFS stud

Vertical carrier rail by others

Cement fibre board by others

Internal drylining board by others

Rainscreen support rail by others

Horizontal Supporting Rails

Where the interfacing rails for the terracotta are fixed horizontally
to the SFS, the load is evenly distributed across the frame.
This requires no special constructions within the SFS.

Vertical Supporting Rails

Where the cladding support rails span vertically the SFS may need
to be set out and designed to ensure that the rails have adequate
support.

66
Technical Cladding

Timber Rainscreen
Timber rainscreen systems can be directly applied to an SFS
system via horizontal timber battens laid directly onto the
insulation / carrier board however Kingspan recommend the
use of the Kingspan Kingpin system as detailed.

The KingPin® Rainscreen Support System is available only as part of the Kingframe Steel
Framing System (SFS) and Kingbuild System (KBS).

Thermal Performance
Thermal performance has been substantially improved by the
choice of stainless steel over the more traditionally used aluminium
alloy. The thermal conductivity of stainless steel is approximately
eight times less than aluminium alloys of typical established
systems. This thermal performance, combined with a reduced
cross sectional area of support, provides a dramatic reduction in
heat lost through the brackets.

The system incorporates a durable sealing gasket, offering

enhanced thermal performance properties. Seal reliability not only
reduces the risk of water penetration, but also enhances the air
tightness performance of the system.

BIM in Kingspan’s History

With the longer term vision being to establish BIM applications
within Kingspan, the business launched a DTI funded Knowledge
Transfer Partnership project back in 2005. With the fulfilment of the
project, Kingspan successfully launched into the BIM environment
though a strategic amalgamation with the University of
Wolverhampton and the purchase of Tekla Structures Software.

Since 2005, Kingspan has heavily invested in developing BIM

capable Tekla Structures software by exploring its capability to
adopt Kingspan prefabrication procedures and its features through
a high end .NET programming platform.
