OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this lesson the participant

will be able to:

 recognize the different, safety signs and barriers and how

to deal with every type :from them.
 determine the suitable ones according to the required job
function and working types.
 identify Floor planning and color coding
 Identify the safety precautions when working on Height and
Excavation Works

Introduction

Barriers & signs are very important tools.

They are Red and White. HV test barriers define an area where HV testing is
being undertaken

Work at Height

33
Work at Height

34
Work at Height

 Poles, ladders, scaffolds, climbing ropes, platforms, and other equipment

must be checked before use

 Barriers and warning signs must be posted while lifting materials or carrying
out in high places in order to avoid the fall of an

 Workers are required to use safety belts and straps when working at the top
of poles, steel structures, ladders.

Work at Height

 Workers who stay down shall have to monitor the work going on at
high level places and shall take caution and care to avoid the danger
of falling objects.

 Those who have acrophobia must not carry out works at height .

Ladders
Ladders
1- Portable Ladders

 All ladders shall be provided with suitable safety basis to prevent

slipping and shall be set on a solid surface when used.

39
LADDERS

• Portable metal ladders may not be used for electric works

• Must be inspected before using them.
• Defective ladders removed from service and tagged
• Provided with suitable anti- slip supports
• ladder must not be used in a horizontal position
• One person at the same time,
• Not be placed in front of the doors that
open towards the ladder unless the door has been blocked

40
LADDERS

• Ladders must not be placed on boxes.

• Ladders must not be connected to each other to make

• Both hands must be free to hold the sides
• The worker shall not climb farther the third step from
the top

41
Ladders
 Ladders used to reach the roof must extend for at least one meter above
the supporting point.

42
Ladders
1- Portable Ladders

 The horizontal distance between the wall and the ladder foot must be
about one quarter of the extended length of the ladder.

43
Ladders
 Insulated ladders must be used in all electric works.

Scaffolds

45
Scaffolds

 Scaffolds must be able to support without failure, a load equals 4 times the
maximum intended load.

46
47
Scaffolds
 Scaffolds and other similar devices must be maintained in a safe condition and must
not be changed or horizontally moved when in use.

48
Scaffolds

secured from movement.

 Access ladder or equivalent safe access should be provided to persons working on

scaffolds.

 Employees are not allowed to work on scaffolds during unstable weather conditions.

50
Scaffolds

 Tools or materials shall not be allowed to accumulate- in quantities on the

scaffold to cause a hazard.

 Wires or fiber ropes for scaffolds must be able to support at least six (6) times
the intended load.

51
Excavation Works

52
Excavation Works

 Must be very careful when excavating in areas with underground facilities and the
excavation must be manually when approaching to the facilities.

 Do not use mechanical excavation equipment except in the areas that have no
danger of contacting electrical cables or damaging other facilities.
