RECTOR’S WORD

IF LIFE`S A JOURNEY, EDUCATION

IS THE TRAVEL TICKET

If life is a journey, then education is the ticket – this is our credo and the manner in which we quantify the importance of
education at “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iași, a medical higher education institution with
over 140 years of tradition.

You will find between the covers of this brochure a lot of relevant information, images and figures, which are all
arguments to support the claim that our University is designed to recruit, train and nurture physician scientists who will
become leaders in the health professions. Unfortunately, the essential will be missing as it is impossible to describe in a
brochure the atmosphere and educational context that we intend to create for our students.

In our institution the teacher is engaged in an educational partnership with the student and stops being just a means of
providing information and evaluation. We speak of a more profound definition of the relationship student - teacher,
much closer to the ideal type described by the relationship disciple - mentor. Knowledge is being assimilated more
easily and the vocation - both the student vocation and the teacher vocation – is receiving the proper recognition in this
high quality educational institution, which genuinely and actively tends towards excellence. Our teaching staff`s effort is
logistically supported by an educational infrastructure, which has been booming in recent years. The University’s
outstanding teaching facilities provide an excellent environment for the developing of practical and clinical skills. Our
modern academic management is primarily opened to freedom of thought and expression, on a background of
professional, moral and social responsibility, acting as a creativity generator. Our goal is to offer to society excellent
doctors, which are spiritually rich people, open to cultural pluralism, hungry for knowledge and eager to constantly
surpass themselves.

Therefore, we would be honored to become your trustworthy guides, dedicated to your most important steps of this
journey called career, professional performance and personal fulfillment.

TRAVEL TO IASI

If you decide to travel by plane, you should know there are at least four airlines companies with direct flights to Iasi:
Tarom Air Transport, Austrian Airlines, Blue Air, WizzAir and. Tarom Air Transport has four internal flights per day. The
trip from Bucharest to Iasi takes about one hour. Your place of arrival in Romania may be also Otopeni Airport, near
Bucharest. You can take a taxi/bus from the airport to the North Railway Station (Gara de Nord)in Bucharest, from
where all the trains to Iasi leave.

When you arrive to the Iasi airport, you should have no problem getting accommodation (if you have not done so
beforehand), just tell the taxi driver: “Hotel Astoria” or “Hotel Unirea”. These hotels are quite affordable and are right
next to the university.

The entertainment is everywhere, from little coffee shops, to clubs and bars, to cozy restaurants and bistros. Many also
attend the theater and opera. Fashion is also quite a thing here; therefore you can find many boutiques, malls and little
shops around town. In other words, entertainment is not a problem; eventually everyone finds his or her way.

The national currency of

Romania is RON,
which has an
exchange rate
of circa 4.75:1 with Euro. The
prices are quite reasonable.

UNIVERSITY'S CAFETERIA (scan QR code for map)

will be able to host 200 hungry students simultaneously.

The food is tasty and prices are the lowest you’ll get in Iasi if you show them your student ID.
Average price for a complete menu (2 dishes) is 12 lei (~2.5 euros – and there’s no typo here).

You can check their daily offer by calling +40.232.301.720. It is open until 16:00.

Tip: The earlier you go the most dishes you can choose from, since they have dishes of the day.

Mall.

Basic lexicon for ordering at the restaurant:

HEALTH SERVICES

You’ll be surprised, but even (future) medical doctors could get sick. So here is some useful information in case of:

• First of all, we do not have specific regional diseases in Romania (like Malaria, Zika or the West Nile virus). The
major risk you’ll probably face is indigestion, after having way too much of our tremendous (and often fatty)
dishes.

• As an EU citizen, if you unexpectedly fall ill you are entitled to medical treatment and have the same rights to
healthcare as Romanian citizens. You should have your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card is
the proof that you are insured in an EU country.
