Assessment Brief

Module Title: Sustainable Engineering Design

Module Code: NG2S213
Module Leader/Tutor: Olusanjo Fadiya
Assessment Type: Report (CW) 1
Assessment Title: Research and concept Design
Weighting: 40%
Word count/duration/equivalent: 1600 words
Submission Date: 31st October 2023
Return Date: 30th November 2023

Assessment Description

Design Context:
Many hobbyists design and build their own CNC machines. These are then used to
manufacture parts for their projects in various materials. Initial thoughts are to design and
produce a home-made 3 axes CNC 3D printer by using as many off-the-shelf components as
possible that could be sold as both a finished product and in-kit form.
Your task is to perform a thorough research onto current home-made CNC machines and 3D
printers in order to select and determine the parameters for a bench mounted CNC 3D printer
with 3 axes. The outcome of this research should be summarised in the form of a design
specification.

Using the design specification, a series of design concepts should be developed and
evaluated.

Tasks:
This first stage of the process for designing the given product is to properly analyse the design
problem; identify design solutions; evaluate the identified solutions and select the optimum
design.
You will then write a report that should include evidence to show that you have undertaken
the following tasks:

(i) You should read the design brief given above and create product design specifications
(PDS) for the product ensuring specifications meet the requirements stated in this brief
and others that you may add to them. Structure the PDS to include categories of

requirements such as function, materials, environment, cost, manufacturing process,

maintenance, quality standards and safety regulations.
(ii) Use the appropriate technique such as brainstorming, morphological analysis,
research etc., to produce at least 3 possible design solutions. The adopted
technique(s), including details of each possible solution, must be explained in your
report.
(iii) Using evaluation matrix, evaluate the possible solutions with respect to selection
criteria that meet the design requirements. The criteria should include function, cost,
materials (any relevant property e.g., weight, corrosion resistance, etc.), manufacturing
process, maintenance, etc.
(iv) Select the optimum design solution and justify your decision.

Guidance on Format of Assessment

NB:
You will have to submit:
• A report of about 1600 words which presents the details of the tasks stated above.

Structure of the report

The following guide may help you structure your report:
Title Page – Include the title of the assignment, your name and student number.
Abstract – A summary of your work. In here, you state what you completed in full, but as
short as possible. One to two short paragraphs.
Table of Contents – Must be included.
1. Introduction – The introduction of a technical report represents the subject, the
purpose, and the plan of the development of your report. Writing the introduction, you
should keep in mind that your main aim is to introduce your readers to the problem that
you are setting out to solve in the course of your technical report.
Objective – Do not forget to include the objective of the assignment in this section.
2. Design – Include details of all the individual tasks here. This will include product design
specification (PDS); details of three possible solutions and evaluation matrix.
3. Conclusions – Conclude what was presented in the previous 2 sections and justify the
selection of the optimum design solution. Do not conclude anything that had not been
discussed. Think of the conclusion as a short restatement of important findings from your
conceptual design so far. One to two short paragraphs.
4. Recommendations – how could this design process be improved?
5. References – Any books and online sources you used to help you carry out the tasks
given in this assignment.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

Demonstrate an understanding of the design and selection of appropriate machine
elements for a mechanical design problem.

What happens next?

Your marked assessment should be available 20 working days after submission. However,
please be advised that this may be subject to change in the event of Bank Holidays, University
Closure or staff sickness. If there is something about the feedback you have been given that
you are unclear about, please see your module tutor.

Feedback Method
Written feedback is given and made available on Blackboard.

Late Submission
Work submitted late will be capped at 40% as long as work is submitted within 7 days (a week)

Your Assessment Queries

This assessment tests your ability to interpret the information you are given in order to
formulate a solution. If you calculate things by hand or you use any other software to aid you
it is entirely up to you.
