Introduction
Egypt is a country with a rich cultural heritage, and one of the most
important aspects of its culture is its traditional folk dances. These dances
not only showcase the beauty and diversity of Egypt’s various regions, but
also reflect the country’s long and storied history.

● October 19, 1917 – December 26, 1974 in AlQurraya, Syria
● Syrian-Lebanese-Egyptian composer, singer actor, oud virtuoso (“ Malek El Oud”)
● He belonged to the religious minority Druze clan of their parents, Princess Alia and
Prince Fahd al-Atrash
● He had two siblings: Asmahan and Fouad
● Studied at Egypt’s Music Conservatory and became apprentice of Riad Al Sunbati in the
1930s
● Started his career as Oud player at radio stations
● He is known for his distinctive voice and mawals (“Rabee” and “Awel Hamssa”)
● Starred in 31 movies and composed all of the songs in the movies (“Intisar Al Shabab”
and “Youm Bila Ghad”)
● He composed songs for top Arab singers, Asmahan (sister), as well as Shadia, Warda,
and Sabah.
● One of the four 'greats' of Egyptian and Arabic music, along with Abdel Halim Hafez,
Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Oum Kalthoum
Ahmed Shawqi
● October 16, 1868 – October 13, 1932 in Cairo, Egypt
● Graduated from law school and translation
● Travelled France in 1887
● Khedive Tawfiq, the Ottoman governor of Egypt
● Send praise poems
● Returned to Egypt in 1891 and became Poet Laureate
● Exiled to Spain in 1914 because of British occupation
● Wrote nostalgic poems for Egypt and returned after 4 years
● In 1927, he was called the Prince of Poets because he was
reformer of contemporary Arab poetry
Omar Sharif
● His original name is Michael Demitri Shalhoub
● Born April 10, 1932, Alexandria, Egypt
● Died July 10, 2015, Cairo
● Studied in English schools and participated in the theater in secondary
school.
● In 1953, his acting dreams were realized when he was cast opposite
Egyptian star Faten Hamama in Siraa fil-wadi
● The couple was married in 1955
● He was recognized internationally for his film Lawrence of Arabia which
earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor
● His role in Doctor Zhivago (1965), earning him the Golden Globe for Best Actor
● His career encompassed over 100 films spanning 50 years
