TYPES OF DANCES
FOLK DANCE/ETHNIC DANCE
◦ Social dances that portray the beliefs, interests,
habits, customs and practices of the native.
◦ Ex. Maranao and Tausug dances. Dances from
Mindanao.
BALLROOM DANCES
◦ Dances of public entertainment, usually performed
in pairs in ballrooms, nightclubs, auditoriums or in
public places.
◦ Ex. Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Boogie, Tango, Rhumba, Waltz
THEATRICAL DANCES
◦ Performed for the entertainment of the audience in
a theater.
◦ Ex. Ballet, Modern Dance, Musical Comedy Dance,
Tap dance
THERE IS ALWAYS
MOVEMENT IN A DANCE.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE
◦ A popular form of dance which developed during the middle
portion of the twentieth century and has since grown to
become one of the dominating performance genres for
formally trained dancers throughout the world.
◦ A performing art that involves rhythmic body movement within
a given space, choreographed based on musical beat.
◦ Performed either in front of an audience or by everyone on a
dance floor.
◦ With particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and
western Europe. Although originally informed by and
borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has
since come to incorporate elements from many styles of
dance.
◦ Due to its popularity amongst trained dancers and
some overlap in movement type, it is often perceived
as being closely related to modern dance, ballet and
other classical concert dance styles.

TINIKLING
◦ Philippine dance which involves two individual
performers hitting bamboopoles, using them to
beat, tap, and slide on the ground, in co-ordination
with one or more dancers who steps over and in
between poles.
CARINOSA
◦ Loving or affectionate one
◦ Philippine National dance from the Maria Clara suite
of Philippine folk dances, where the fan, and
handkerchief plays an instrument role as it places
the couple in romance scenario.
CORDILLERA DANCES
◦ BANGA DANCE
◦ Illustrates the grace and strength of women in the
Kalinga tribe.
◦ Women performing the Banga balance heavy pots
on their heads while dancing to the beat of wind
chimes.
◦ This mimics Kalinga women collecting and
transporting water.
LUMAGEN or TACHOK
◦ Performed to celebrate happy occasions.
◦ It is meant to symbolize flying birds and is musically-
paired to the beat of gongs.
SALIDSID
◦ The dance to show courtship.
◦ A male and a female performer represent a rooster
attempting to attract a hen.
