Understanding the mechanical properties of
paper in fundamental terms is a difficult task,
and it is an area of intense study in many labora-
tories around the world. The ultimate aim of
such studies is to provide a complete under-
standing of the relationships between the struc-
ture and properties of paper and papermaking
procedures so as to be able to tailor-make paper
properties to meet any desired end-use require-
ments. Unfortunately, this goal has not yet
been achieved. Instead, an alternative approach
is often required; that of assessing the utility of
paper to meet a desired need based on its ability
to satisfy the requirements of some specified
tests. Usually such tests are dependent upon
particular test instrument designs and carefully
defined procedures as to size of samples and
other variables. Such tests often measure com-

Burst Strength
Bursting strength is perhaps the most
commonly measured strength property of paper.
The test apparently originated from the old time
practice of the papermaker who, in a hands-on
quality control evaluation of paper strength,
would attempt to push his thumb through the
sheet. The burst strength, which is also called
the Mullen or pop strength, measures the
amount of hydrostatic pressure (which increases
at a specified rate) required to rupture a piece of
paper. The Mullen tester is shown in Fig. 2.13; in-
serts show the test area. The paper is ruptured by
a small, circular (30.5 mm, 1.20 in. diameter),
rubber diaphragm pushed against the paper by
glycerin. The maximum pressure before rupture
is measured in psi or kPa. The burst test is highly
correlated to the tensile strength. TAPPI Stan-

Fold endurance measures the durability of pa-
per when repeatedly folded under constant load,
determining how many times the paper can be
folded until it breaks. The folding strength is
quoted as the number of double folds, and the
folding endurance is the log10 of the number of
double folds. The test is primarily used for testing
papers that are frequently handled, such as cur-
rency (bank note) papers, maps, and wrapping
papers. The aging characteristics of a paper can
be assessed by measuring fold endurance before
