1. Introduction
The state Jharkhand came into existence on 15th November 2000 as a 28th State of Union of India after being bifurcated from Bihar
State, the Hazaribag district is one of the 24 district of Jharkhand. The Hazaribag district is situated on National Highway 33 & 96 km away
from state’s capital, Ranchi. Hazaribag district comprising majority area of Hazaribag plateau and bounded by district Kodarm a in the north,
Giridih and Bokaro in the east, Ranchi in south and Chatra in the west.
The Latitude and Longitude of district is 23.5° - 24.4° and 85.1° -85.9° respectively. The average altitude is 2012 feet above the sea level. The
districts of Koderma, Chatra, Ramgarhand Giridih have been bifurcated from this district. The district of Hazaribag is situated in the north east
part of North Chotanagpur Division.

2. Administrative Setup
From administrative point of view Hazaribag is the district head quarter, and is a part of North Chotanagpur Division. The total area
of the district is 4302 Sq. Km.

There are 1323 villages in the district and 251 are Gram Panchayats in this district.

3. Demographics
Hazaribag District, with population of about 17.3 lakh is Jharkhand's the 7th most populous district, located in the state Jharkhand in
India. Total geographical area of Hazaribag district is 3555 km2 and it is the 13th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of
the district is 488 persons per km2. The district is home to about 17.3 lakh people, among them about 8.9 lakh (51%) are male and about 8.4
lakh (49%) are female. 75% of the whole population are from general caste, 17% are from schedule ca ste and 7% are schedule tribes.
Population of the district has decreased by -23.8% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 22.8 lakh. Female
population growth rate of the district is -24% which is -0.3% lower than male population growth rate of -23.7%. As of 2011 census there are
947 females per 1000 male in the district. Sex ratio in general caste is 939, in schedule caste is 958 and in schedule tribe is 1003.

4. Topography and Climate


The physiographic characteristics of the district are rich. It has
waterfalls, hills, and land with avalanches. Hazaribag is surrounded by
green forest. Physiographically, the district consists of Plateaus, residual
hills and inter-montane valleys. The district can be divided into three
divisions namely the Central Plateau, The lower plateau and the
Damodar valley.
Geologically the area is underlain by Chotanagpur granite gneiss,
phyllitemica-schist. It is unconformably overlain by lower Gondwana
formations consisting of Sandstone, Shales and Coal seams. Ground
water mainly occurs under water table condition in weathered
residuum and semi-confined condition in deeper fractures.
The district comes within the tropical monsoon region. The climate of
Hazaribag plateau is much the same as that of Ranchi, a bit different
from the other neighboring districts. It is quite cold during the winter
but not very hot during the summer. The mean daily minimum
temperature is 37.5 C in May and the mean daily minimum
temperature is 3° C.

5. Drainage
The district is drained by two major rivers, the Damodar and the
Barakar River with a few minor tributaries like Naikari, Bhera, Kusum,
Bokaro, Mohana and kumari. The Naikari with drainage from the south
and further down the Bhera joins the Damodar River. The Damodar
and the Barakar rivers show structurally controlled pattern. The
drainage here is highly dissected in criss-cross fashion.
